Wu Wei Cup 2021 is an international Tajiquan competition organized by Jan Leminsky of the Wu Wei Shule Hamburg. This internal Martial Arts tournament is for several aspects of the Chinese Martial Arts. In this video you see some students other Tai Chi Apeldoorn He Yong Gan school. These students are: Frederik Jan Jüngen, Wim Rensen, Wesley Broekhuis and Theresia Pang. Also this team won several prizes at the WuWeiCup 2021.

You don't find a student like Sean every day. Love him or hate him everyone misses a guy like this when he's gone. In fact, due to some unfortunate circumstances, Sean is no longer able to continuing training. I do thank him for his efforts in helping me to document the Wing Chun which I personally know, and which I believe the world is long overdue for knowing as well. Because it's somewhat difficult for me to find students, I really valued the time Sean was able to spend with me. Good luck, Troublemaker.

TIP: Slow the video down to discover exactly how my left hand/wrist initiates (from afar) the hooking of Sean's right arm just before becoming securely trapped under my left wing. This is one of the many differences which sets this highly developed style of Wing Chun apart from most others. Many of my techniques are difficult to see in real-time, so it's worth slowing down these videos. There is much to discover if you look closely.

Beginning Trapping Instruction

2 weeks, 2 days ago

Typically practiced as follows

One practitioner executes continuous center-line punches while the other (the one controlling the routine) executes random blocks and punches but with intermittent Tan Sao Stops to where both parties then fight for center line position until the controller releases the opponents lower held write to where the opponent should then immediately continue punching and repeat until one or both practitioner’s shoulders become burnt-out.

It’s important to understand that both parties continue to apply pressure on their shoulders. For example, when the defensive practitioner (controller) stops at Tan Sao, both parties begin fighting for center line position. At the same time, the offensive practitioners throwing the continuous punches attempts to continue throwing the punches with the arm that would be used for the next but, however, he cannot do so due to the controller holding his lower wrist. But he still continues to try by breaking the wrist-hold and punching. In other words, no matter who is offense or defense, both parties receive the full shoulder workout, only that one party practices straight punching (which in Wing Chun can be looked at as a jab in boxing, though never telegraphed), while the other practices arm control and reacting to the straight punches using random moves – whatever comes to mind, and which is looked simply as a drill that sharpens your blades.

Rotate offense/defense between practitioners.

Note - In this example you can see the student’s form degrading as his shoulders become exhausted. Don’t sacrifice form for strength. Try to maintain the form of the punches, Tan Sao blocks, or any other moves executed during the drill. Don’t continue to practice moves that are out of form. When it gets to that point, you’ve become fully spent and should then stop and recover your strength before continuing on.

2 weeks, 3 days ago

This drill should be practiced often for various reasons. When doing this drill one person keeps the constant punches coming while the other sharpens his blades (practices his moves). Scripted drills are good for new students until they are proficient enough to not need them. When the practitioner's Wing Chun becomes a reflex and executed essentially without thinking, this unscripted freestyle punching drill is the most enjoyable drill and continues to further advance your timing, reaction, and overall skills.

2 weeks, 3 days ago

The Center line Fight punching drill is a great drill to practice and contains several benefits.

Shoulder strength is a key attribute in the style of WCRE. This dill is great for developing that strength, as well as, for developing a dominant center line strength.

2 weeks, 3 days ago

This advice is specific to the WCRE style of Wing Chun as its fighting strategy is significantly different from that of the classical Wing Chun fighting strategy.

DETAIL:

1) Used in closing the gap (when not anticipating a take-down attempt)
2) To be used while your opponent attacks with punches
3) Primarily used as a trapping technique

The idea behind this unique technique is to meet your opponent’s attack head-on and to then immediately obtain a double-arm trap. If your Wing Chun has evolved to the needed level of proficiency, and if executed correctly in regards to timing and response, then as soon as one of your opponent’s arms comes into contact with your flurry of alternating Rolling Bong Sao's, you should quickly have both of your opponent’s arms locked into a trap and transition to a take-down ending up in top-control, to which then a final trap and block-free strike to hopefully end the fight - if the opponent has not given up beforehand. Due to the large advantage in arm control that a highly skilled WCRE practitioner has over it's opponent, it is encouraged to allow for the opponent a chance to give up. The devastating ground and pound abilities of WCRE should be held and used responsibly.

As with most WCRE trapping attempts, there is a risk of getting struck in the process. To limit the chance of being struck I personally tend to lean back when doing this technique. I realize that in doing so my balance is partially sacrificed but, to me, it’s an accepted trade-off as it limits the chances of being struck on entry. If developed to a high enough level of form and speed; however, your tornado flurry should provide an adequate amount of blockage, and to which the practitioner should be able to recognize the exact moment his tornado’s become interrupted and react accordingly as described above.

Understand that this technique is only practical when fighting a striker. If your opponent’s fighting ability is unknown, or if you cannot confidently determine if his attack will be standing and punching or a shoot-in for a take-down, then it would not be wise to use this technique in meeting the attack due to if the opponent were to shoot-in for a take-down, he would easily avoid your tornado’s and gain a ground advantage.

That said, the technique does in fact work as I’ve personally used it successfully against an angry boxing instructor attacking me, who which quickly gave up (thankfully) once realizing the high level of arm control I had over him. It is only because of this reason that I include this video as I would never teach or claim a technique worked which I haven’t successfully verified in training or actual combat myself.

I acknowledge that if the opponent were to attack with punches it would be more efficient to simply shoot-in for a take-down and avoid using the tornado's altogether. The usage of the technique will typically depend on the situation. Executing the trap while standing sets up a devastating body slam opportunity. Or, if the practitioner is not comfortable going to the ground he can end the fight inn the classic way of remaining on his feet. Your situation and skill level will determine it's usage.

QUESTION:
How does a student know when he is ready to use some of the modified Wing Chun techniques which you describe on this channel?

ANSWER:
If you are asking this question, you are not ready. At some point in your training you will realize that you don't wonder about this question anymore. It is at this point that you will realize that (at the time) the question itself was the answer you were looking for.

Fight within your abilities and limit the use of experimental moves or techniques which you haven’t personally mastered or verified as being practical.

2 weeks, 3 days ago

This type of speed punching drill should not be done for the typical reasons most Wing Chun practitioners do them. Most WC practitioners are taught in the classical way and naturally become loyal to the school's way of doing things. Still worse are those that fall into, sadly, all-too-common delusional Wing Chun world believing that if they practice their straight punches for long enough making them sharp and fast, they can then easily straight-blast their way to certain victory. The straight blast is not a good fighting strategy and it's unlikely to work in today's world with so many people knowledgeable of MMA. The Wing Chun style is not the mystery that it once was.

That said, these drills are still good to do. They are a great workout for your arms and shoulders. It can, of course, also improve your punching speed, center line accuracy, and ultimately result in faster center line counters.

Like the boxer's quick jab, the Wing Chun straight punches can be difficult to see, which is why it works well with in-fighting. But it's important to not become obsessed with them thinking that you’re starring in an Ip Man movie. In my opinion, throwing more than three center line punches during a real fight is not using the straight punch effectively and causes the remaining punches to be easily telegraphed.

Again, this drill is done for specific training purposes but not for using the classic straight-blast attack as a fighting strategy.
It's important to understand this.

2 weeks, 3 days ago

In this video I work with a student doing Chi Sao. The normal benefits of classical Wing Chun still apply (sensitivity training), but Wing Chun Re-engineered puts a large focus on arm control and arm trapping, and where the trapping is applied differently from that in the classical system.

Here I initiate restrained offensive movements giving the student an opportunity to trap my arms and strike. If he fails to do so within 2 or 3 of my punches, I will then take control and essentially demonstrate what he needs to be doing to me. He is given only a short time before I take control because in Wing Chun Re-Engineered, the objective is to gain arm control as quickly as possible, secure a solid double-arm trap (applying elbow strikes as needed), and ultimately end up on the ground in top control position applying a final double-arm trap and solid block-free elbow strike ending the fight.

In Wing Chun Re-Engineered we never use the classical Wing Chun straight punch blast in an offensive manner. We also seldom perform trapping in the classical way, but instead, perform solid and secure double-arm traps intended to disable the opponents ability to use his arms before being struck while standing or on the ground. The idea is to trap both of the opponents arms while having a free hand or elbow to strike with.

Good ways to practice this is thus.
Meditation - Sit and focus in the belly. Make sure your pelvic floor is engaged and you're breathing deeply.
Compress power into the naval continuously, forming a ball of focus inside of it.

Physical - Stand against a wall, door, training partner, punching bag or other solid large object and place your hands upon it.
Push in a jolt like burst manner while exerting internal force to ignite or start the motion. Repeat.

Easy way to think is that external force is muscles while internal is air pressure from the internal body.

Several (slightly) different versions of the same technique. Done slowly at first to show the fundamentals and gradually "smoothed out." Not "full speed" for clarification of the technique.

First movement is an evasion (tai sabaki), then a trap and a throw. a "1,2,3" movement. The most important thing to remember is, "first, don't get hit".

What do you do if you hurt your arm in a fight? And the other guy has a stick, "protest sign", skateboard, etc?

Here's one option. It's not an ideal situation and you have to act fast once you stop the power of the swing.

This is a common defense in many arts. Here, you can see some crossover between eskrima and budo.

Jackie Chan movies are known for their crystal clear action sequences. The moves might be fast and the props might be outlandish, but the editing and directing is always aimed at helping you to enjoy the fight rather than giving you a seizure from extreme close-ups.

Fight scene reactions are strongly manipulated in the editing process. Do you want a section to feel slow to the audience? Want it to feel frenetic? A simple technique can make the same two clips feel slow or fast without the need to add messy, extraneous cuts.

Jackie Chan movies aren't always directed by the man himself. He often relies on masterful directors like Sammo Hung and, in this case, Stanley Tong. Tong might be the most advanced fight scene director in the world. I don't mean his choreography, but his actual filming and editing prowess; Stanley Tong is on another level.

The viewer's Fight scene reactions are in the palm of his hands. He makes the complex clear, the slow fast, the fast simple, etc. He holds the viewer's hand when necessary, guiding their eyes like an omnipotent NPC in an RPG. "Why does that villager know exactly what I'm looking for and where I should look?"

Fight scenes are a unique beast when it comes to filming. Directors, editors, and choreographers need a completely new set of tools for effectively guiding the eye in these types of scenes. This is that guide. These are those tools.

Real life attacks and kidnap attempts often utilize a hold on the victim for control. Such holds are often powerful, and give thugs an amazing advantage especially if they are physically superior to the victim. Once the hold is in place, thugs can control the victim’s motion and balance, strike the victim into submission, or drag the victim into a car or a secluded place. This lesson covers self-defense options for breaking real holds used by thugs and kidnappers and includes several early and late response variations.

The book is available here: https://amzn.to/2Z6wHSy Boxing for Self-Defense: Taking the Sweet Science from the Ring to the Street.
In this video, I break down a street fight in a parking lot between two guys. One of them is using (amateurish) boxing techniques and is very effective with them. There are many lessons to take away about how to use boxing for self-defense and how to avoid becoming a victim in the street.

Street attacks can be brutal and deadly. When defending yourself, or others, it’s important to remember that there’s more than just a single way to throw a punch.
Restricting oneself in combat to only one or two kinds of strikes is both limiting and potentially dangerous. This lesson approaches angled, broader, and tighter hand striking techniques.

- Upper Cut (Closed-Fist and Open-Palm)

A long delayed, much desired episode is finally here!! "Inner Strength", "Internal Power", Inner Energy", "Qi", "Ki", "Chakra". There are a number of ways to refer to a capacity that lies dormant within most people. A few rare types naturally awaken to this latent aspect of humanity. But, for the bulk of humanity, special training is required. The sort of training one finds in the World of Martial Arts. In this installment, your favorite Kung Fu Uncle, "Metaphysical Polemarch" YogaMidnight, Backdoor Saboteur Maeko, & Great White Hunter Lloyd take a look at the various pop culture depictions of the special, Inner Power developed by Martial Arts training. "Informal" is the watchword for this one, friends!

Many self-defense situations can be overcome through the ability to throw reliable, controlled, and powerful strikes. Learn strike techniques which bypass the traditional limitations of purely mechanical strikes (especially with big windups) which often can’t be fully utilized in chaotic street fighting or deadly attack situations.

DavidPFranceTV INTERVIEW #38
CHRIS YOUNG
Martial Artist, Actor and Model
Owner of Gong Lung (Steel Dragon) Studio
Pittsburgh

www.steel-dragon.org

For his 38th interview, David speaks with Chris Young for the second time. Chris is a martial artist, actor and model based in Pittsburgh, PA. In this episode, David and Chris discuss latest projects, acting, the art of making Chinese lions used in cultural celebrations and his ancestors. They also discuss the idea of FLOW and how it is integral to martial arts, dance (Chris is learning Samba), capoeira and daily life.

More on Chris:

At his school, Gong Lung (Steel Dragon) he and his students practice several style of Chinese martial arts including Eagle Claw, White Ape Connected Back, Xing-Yi, Bagua and Tai Chi. Additionally, they practice the Afro-Brazilian style of Capoeira Angola. Steel Dragon is also well known for Chinese lion dance, the performance of which is how it started. Steel Dragon performs Dragon Dance as well.

Chris fell into modeling by accident when he was scouted and enjoyed it. After a while, he decided to pursue it more seriously. In the process, he decided to take acting in the hopes it would help his modeling. As a result, thanks in no small part to his teacher, he also fell in love with acting itself and has started more seriously pursuing that craft on its own merit.

Where he can, Chris tries to find synergy between these three sets of skills and well as practicing them each on their own. The pursuit of these is pretty much the mainstay of his life.
