Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, Op. 107 ‘Reformation’ by Felix Mendelssohn

Mendelssohn completed this symphony in 1830 to be performed at the tercentennial Augsburg celebrations in Germany. These celebrations are to commemorate the presentation of the Augsburg confession to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1530, a crucial event in the Protestant Reformation. Due to ill health Mendelssohn was not able to complete the symphony for the festival in June or 1830. The work would be premiered in 1832 in Berlin.

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (* 3. Februar 1809 in Hamburg; † 4. November 1847 in Leipzig) war ein deutscher Komponist, Pianist und Organist. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Musiker der Romantik und setzte als Dirigent neue Maßstäbe, die das Dirigieren bis heute maßgeblich prägen.

Daneben setzte sich Mendelssohn Bartholdy für die Aufführung von Werken Händels und Johann Sebastian Bachs ein. Damit trug er wesentlich zu ihrer Wiederentdeckung und zur Herausbildung eines Verständnisses für die „klassische“ Epoche der deutschen Musik bei. Er gilt als Mitbegründer der historischen Musikpflege und gründete das erste Konservatorium in Deutschland...
