1927 - 2022

6 days, 5 hours ago

Drawing on and defining classic sci-fi themes, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future in which society is thoroughly divided in two: while anonymous workers conduct their endless drudgery below ground their rulers enjoy a decadent life of leisure and luxury. When Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) ventures into the depths in search of the beautiful Maria (Brigitte Helm in her debut role), plans of rebellion are revealed and a Maria-replica robot is programmed by mad inventor Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) and master of Metropolis Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel) to incite the workers into a self-destructive riot.

A'Holy Grail' among film finds, Metropolis is presented here in a newly reconstructed and restored version, as lavish and spectacular as ever thanks to the painstaking archival work of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung and the discovery of 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world. Lang's enduring epic can finally be seen for the first time in 83 years as the director originally intended, and as seen by German cinema-goers in 1927.

While Superman protects Metropolis, the Metropolis-based conglomerate Webscoe hires Gus Gorman, a talented computer-programmer. Gus embezzles from his employer through salami slicing, which brings him to the attention of CEO Ross Webster. Webster is intrigued by Gus' potential to help him financially. Webster, his sister Vera, and Webster's girlfriend Lorelei blackmail Gus into helping him.

At the Daily Planet, Clark Kent convinces Perry White to let him and Jimmy Olsen visit Smallville for Clark's high-school reunion, while fellow reporter and Clark's unrequited romantic interest Lois Lane leaves for a Bermuda vacation. En route, as Superman, Kent extinguishes a fire in a chemical plant containing unstable beltric acid, which produces corrosive vapor when superheated.

At the reunion, Clark reunites with childhood friend Lana Lang, a divorcée with a young son named Ricky. Clark is harassed by Brad Wilson, his former bully and Lana's ex-boyfriend. While visiting Lana, Superman saves Ricky from being killed by a combine harvester.

Fritz Lang Meet Pink Floyd
The opening scene in Fritz Lang's classic silent film "Metropolis" is subtitled with Pink Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine" lyrics. Metropolis takes place in the year 2026. We are already seeing this brutal form of totalitarianism in many European Union countries. Mandatory lock downs and vaccinations in Australia and in Canada. Washington State now has ordered mandatory vaccinations. This evil fascistic takeover is slowly creeping up on us. New York, Chicago, San Francisco are turning into hellholes. Better wake up and see the faux vaccine for what it really is and put an end to it soon. Don't be a zombie in the apocalypse!

What is Moloch in Metropolis? In Fritz Lang’s silent film Metropolis (1927), Moloch is a vision of a demonic machine. His face overlays machinery, and the hero, Freder, has a vision of workers being dragged by chains into the fires inside Moloch’s mouth. What does Freder’s vision of Moloch represent?

This SHEEPLE SONG is titled "Sheeple Are Sheeple" by Spike Adams. A parody of Depeche Mode's "People Are People" to film clips from the 1927 Fritz Lang film "Metropolis".

"Supplemental" videos are non HOTT-made or related vids I believe make a great addition to this channel, so PLEASE excuse these breaks from the regular broadcast. Normally these are posted at random, but since this one is music, it's going up on "HOTT Music Friday" in addition to the regular schedule.

Here is a remarkable fan-made video meshing clips from the 1927 German transhumanist silent film "Metropolis" with the classic 1969 rock song "In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)" by Zager & Evans. Enjoy!

Here's a music video I cut together with footage from the classic apocalyptic sci-fi film Metropolis, combined with sci-fi folk song In The Year 2525 by Zager & Evans. I really found them fitting together in a dystopian transhumanist meets Aldous Huxley's Brave New World kind of way. What awaits humanity after the intense technological and biological developments set in motion? If we ever get there? Thea von Harbou had some intensively accurate visions of the future. And Fritz Lang did the visual masterpiece. Not to forget Brigitte Helm and her impressive acting. All this is now a classic topic about the future of humanity. In this video I wanted to concentrate the idea, the message and the visions of the future. With the classic one hit wonder song and outstanding vintage film footage. In the year 2525, if man is still alive
If woman can survive, they may find
In the year 3535

Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie
Everything you think, do and say
Is in the pill you took today

In the year 4545
You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you

In the year 5555
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doin' that for you

In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube

In the year 7510
If God's a-coming, He oughta make it by then
Maybe He'll look around Himself and say
"Guess it's time for the Judgement Day"

In the year 8510
God is gonna shake His mighty head
He'll either say, "I'm pleased where man has been"
Or tear it down, and start again

In the year 9595
I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing

Now it's been ten thousand years, man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew, now man's reign is through
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday

A 2010 Arte and SWR Arts Documentary narrated by Daniel May.

A documentary detailing the restoration process of the landmark film Metropolis as well as the film's troubled history. From American Film Distributors making drastic edits to the film, to WWII in Europe, and finally the dangerous nature of nitrocellulose film. All converging against the historic film. Thankfully in 2008, a damaged print of Lang’s original cut of the film was found in a museum in Argentina. After a long restoration process, the film was 95% restored and shown on large screens in Berlin and Frankfurt simultaneously on 12 February 2010.

Note: This film 'Voyage to Metropolis' has an English narration and is slightly different than the original German film version 'Die Reise nach Metropolis'.

1927 This influential German science-fiction film presents a highly stylized futuristic city where a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. When the privileged youth Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) discovers the grim scene under the city, he becomes intent on helping the workers. He befriends the rebellious teacher Maria (Brigitte Helm), but this puts him at odds with his authoritative father, leading to greater conflict.
