#midi

Another GeoCities MIDI gem. It took a while to find the origins, as all I had to go on for searching was the title of the song. Eventually I stumbled onto Mongo Santamaria, and there it was!

The album, El Pussy Cat, came out in 1965. It's basic genre is Jazz, and labeled under the sub-genres of Latin Jazz, Funk, and Soul. Additionally, the style is considered Boogaloo, Cha-Cha, Guanguancó, as well as Latin Jazz (apparently, you can have a genre and style with the same name). Whatever you call it, it's pretty cool.

You can compare this version from the archives to the original here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPlbc7TwpXw

There's not much I can say about this piece other than it's a MIDI found in the GeoCities 2009 archive. The name, 06reddaw, makes me wonder if it was a sample from the movie Red Dawn from 1984. It could also have been someone's unfinished orchestral arrangement, and figured what they had made for a nice song to load up on their main page. Who knows? However it be, it was worth sharing this find. If anyone recognizes this music from anywhere, or might know the original composer, let me know. I'd love to thank him for sharing it on the GeoCities community, and hope this person knows this MIDI lives on!

Though first released in 1986 by the Italian band P.E.P.E. (Point-Emerging-Probably-Entering), Shadilay has more recently become the theme for Pepe the Frog. One would hope that Manuele Pepe, who wrote the song, might be thrilled by this, but it may depend on his politics and how much of the smear campaign he may have heard and might believe against Pepe and the fictional country Kekistan of which this song is its national anthem. But those who pick up the anthem feel it. They breathe it in like an imagination, a symphony of civilization, and see the world as a "confused progeny of rebellious cells," and would like to "fly toward the universe," to traverse it and find freedom, be it a dream or reality. The fight for freedom is not finished, and though we are stopped, we loosen our sails "in the sky and in the deep of the sea." We seek a strong harmony to stand against this discord. Lamenting the past, we may sing a eulogy to civilization, but we also see hope for that future when the meme wars may be long past, and we can live in freedom once again. Believe in Shadilay, stand strong for Kekistan!

And yes, this was exported directly out of Cakewalk as a WAV format audio. I probably could have done a few edits here and there on Audacity, but why mess with perfection?

From Chrono Tigger, originally composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu. Frog/Glenn is just a unique character, and working with his theme is fun.

This version is different from the OST justice, but you can compare for yourself: https://youtu.be/mpiAEOB0dhs

Other cool versions, of Frog's Theme and Reprise can be heard from Chrono Trigger: The Musical project here:

Chrono Tigger, Squaresoft's 1995 SNES game that, in more than 20 years, has been ported to just about everything from the Playstation to the Nintendo DS, iOS, Android, and most recently to Windows as of February of 2018. You can get it on Steam, if you like. What's not to like about an RPG with composers Yasunori Mitsuda, and the great Nobuo Uematsu of Final Fantasy fame? For this excerpt into my classic game music arrangements, will go with everyone's favorite cave woman tribal leader, Ayla, and a rendition of her theme.

I think I did the OST justice, but you can compare for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzKsYNe3iu4

Also, must say, the most incredible version I've heard of it is from the Chrono Trigger: The Musical project here:

A pre-BandLab Cakewalk version of this piece can be found on my YouTube channel. I may port it over here, but, for now, here's the link:

That was back in 2012 when I was trying to get back into composing MIDI again. Not bad, but maybe nostalgia thinks my better, if not best compositions were back in my high school to college era, between late 90's to early 2000's. But that's just me. Who knows? Maybe I'll have a middle age renaissance. lol

Find Your Love - Drake MIDI

The second single from Drake's Thank Me Later (2010) first album. At the time, I had been in transition from a couple RPs I was involved in on SL back then. This song for me was thematic of a sort of fantasy love story that was happening in one RP between a werewolf and a faery. For another, the song reminds me of the female neko in the pic, who was named Amara.

Between 2008 and 2013, be had been a part of a variety of RP stories together. The first was in Midian City, primarily with my cowboy tiger/tabby neko character named Luke. When we met, Luke was a part of The Pack - rag tag bunch that was the second major hybrid faction in the city. My other character, Iohannes (Ioh, as in 'Yo!' for short) was in the rival group called the Catwalkers at the time. After the RP dried up there for a while, I moved on to Chamber City around 2010, and convinced Amara to come along as well. towards the end of 2011, Her and Luke would have their roles to play in the last RP we were in together at Craberry Cove, which lasted until 2013.

This particular scene in the pic happened some time after Ioh had become the Praetor of the mostly feline hybrid gang called the Custos Noctis. It was in the city park, and Amara was harvesting some herbs. No, this was not a CHAZ/CHOP sort of thing. For one, this RP was a decade before it ever became a thing. Being Post Apocalyptic RP, it happened some time after a major world catastrophe left most cities to become an urban jungle or no man's land. People still inhabited them, but it was rough, since stores and restaurants were pretty much shut down, and everything became a free for all. The Custos Noctis itself took over an abandoned parking building as their headquarters. Another hybrid gang, the Misfits had taken over an abandonedskyscraper, and the only known official trade is through a mysterious Black Market that was said to be run by a demon.

Prior to becoming Praetor, Ioh and Amara bother were disciples to the Bastet named Trinity. Amara was to become the head medic of the Custos Noctis, and Ioh, well, he, as a Son of Sekhmet was testing the Daughter of Bastet as much as she was testing him in a sort of mystical mating ritual to see if they were compatible. However Trinity had disappeared from the city, and was gone for long periods of time. Thus, the Custos Noctis became Ioh's responsibility. He took on the title of Praetor, opting not to push openly the more noble secret pure breed title of Son of Sekhmet. While Trinity may have prefered the old ways, such were difficult for many of the current line of cats to understand or appreciate in the new world. Praetor was still an old world title, but it distinguished Ioh more as a guardian than king or dictator.

At any rate, the RP from a decade ago was in some ways inspiration for a trilogy I'm still working on. The basic background I've had for Ioh was as coming from an ancient line of cats that were not the product of human science tinkering with nature. Instead, Ioh was a natural humanoid feline from a race that could live a very long time. It is believed that they originated on Mars before traveling to For most their lives, the Feles lived deep in forests and in dwelling spaces underground beyond the dark spaces few ever venture into. The idea was to stay away from humans and allow them to develop naturally. Hybrids started to appear due to human scientists managing to capture a village of feles and use their DNA to make the modern neko hybrids. Due to this, the Feles would intermingle with the new breed of cats and become acquainted to human society for all sorts of purposes, both good and bad. Ioh personally had always been a guardian centered sort of character, and so mostly patrolled territory and enforced the rules of the factions of the RPs he was in.

Find your love seems to be a good theme here, because of the sort of triangle Ioh had between Trinity and Amara. Trinity was the perfect partner that was rarely there. Their pure bred blood would always attract them, lead them to desire each other, but the fates were cruel when it came a full bond between the Son of Sekhmet and the Daughter of Bastet. Meanwhile, where the mystical relationship was up in the air, Amara was dependable and resourceful. Would Ioh continue to wait on the perfect love that often seemed so flighty and out of reach, or would he see the one cat that was always there, through thick and thin in a loyalty that also holds its own attraction? The question to that was left unanswered as Chamber City eventually went under and had to shut down the sim.

That ends the story, for now...

Solar Striker was one of those games for the Game Boy that was pretty easy to pass. But, if you've played it, you'll find it was a hidden treasure. Not a hard game to get into, but it can get challenging in the later stages. This first stage song, I loved it even on the old Game Boy sounds. It was a song that really pushed back then, even without the MIDI synths. Toru Osada even went on to arrange the classic Mega Man I stage themes originally composed by Manami Matsumae, as well as Toru's own compositions for Capcom's Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge for the Game Boy. You can hear some of these Game Boy compositions here:

http://www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=Mega_Man:_Dr._Wily%27s_Revenge_(GB)

Aparently There was a filler orchestration of the Solar Striker Stage 1 piece, which Joseph Collins to took advantage of in sequencing the song to MIDI. All I did was switch out the Cakewalk GM drums for the Session Drummer VST N Pulse electronic drums.

I found this MIDI here: https://vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/gameboy/

The original composer for the song is Toru Osada

Oli P. isn't as well known in the US as in Germany. Among th old GeoCities landscape (or music-scape?), you might have heard this MIDI of the German hit song, Flugzeuge Im Bauch. This version was sequenced by Markus -M-, who had an AOL email of [email protected], that may or may not work nowadays.

You can hear the original on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/gTg3TIAmFUk

A generic late 90's rap/pop piece with the mix of songstress beauty singing a catchy, repetitive chorus, and the rest of the song featuring the rapper. One can argue over the origin of doing this, but they became polished mainstays in pop music in the first two decades of the millennium, for better or for worse.

Many sequencers working on making the MIDI of a rap piece often wound up improvising a solo through the rap lyric part. I personally never liked that, so muted it out to get something like a karaoke MIDI for the song. Also used dual drum kit of N-Pulse electronic kit and a dry acoustic kit. Also used a combo of dark and lighter strings to add some contrast to the strings section. Maybe because this is a late 90's piece, I just had to go with the Jerry's Bass - the one that sounds like the Seinfeld interlude bass riffs.

Lyrics:

Flugzeuge Im Bauch

Es war zu jener Zeit,
wir hatten wieder mal Streit
da standst Du an der Tür,
wolltest zurück zu mir
Ich sagte: "Klar, mein Schatz",
und schon bei diesem Satz
hätt' ich wissen müssen,
was ich jetzt erst gerafft hab'

Du machst auf Demi Moore,
sprichst mit deinen Augen nur
und was du versprichst,
ist die wa(h)re Liebe pur
ich hab' dir lange vertraut
und deshalb nicht geglaubt
was die anderen sagen
- mir nicht zu sagen wagen

Laß mich los, laß mich endlich allein
Ich unterdrück' meine Tränen,
um wieder frei zu sein
Ich kann allein sein,
und das weißt Du auch -
und doch hab' ich
Flugzeuge in meinem Bauch

Chorus:
Gib' mir mein
gib' mir mein Herz zurück
du brauchst meine Liebe nicht!
Gib' mir mein Herz zurück
bevor es auseinander bricht
Je eher, je eher Du gehst
um so leichter, um so leichter
wird's für mich

Gib' mir mein Herz zurück

Mir scheint, als wär es gestern,
doch es ist schon lange her
ich trau' mich's kaum zu sagen,
doch mein Leben ist jetzt leer ohne Dich -

Du fehlst 'mir fürchterlich Ganz heimlich -
da denke ich nur an Dich
Du bist in meinem Kopf -
ein Denkmal aus Acryl

doch denk' ich heute weiter,
ignoriere ich das Gefühl
des Alleinseins -
bin mir selber wieder treu
denn heute definier' ich -
mein Leben wieder neu

Laß mich los, laß mich endlich allein
Ich unterdrück' meine Tränen,
um wieder frei zu sein
Ich kann allein sein,
und das weißt Du auch -
und doch hab' ich
Flugzeuge in meinem Bauch

Chorus (2x)

Gib' mir mein Herz zurück

Butterflies In My Tummy (Lit. 'Airplanes In The Stomach')

It was about that time and date,
we were heading down a dire strait.
You stood there at the door,
wanting to make up with me.

I said, "Of course, my dear,"
and already when I stated it,
knew it wasn't my best judgement,
which with you I just barely had it.

You act like you're Demi Moore,
speaking with those eyes of yours,
and they tell of your promise,
the promise of love so pure.

I trusted you for a long time,
and thus did not believe,
what they're slanderingly saying,
but dare not say to me.

Let me go, let me finally be alone.
I'm holding back from crying,
I want to be free again.
I can be be alone,
and you know that as well as me
and yet why these butterflies in my tummy?

Chorus:

Give me mine,
give me back my heart you took,
you don't need my love tonight!
Give back my heart you took.
Sooner, the sooner you go,
easier, the easier,
it will be for me.

Give back my heart you took.

To me it seems like yesterday,
though it's been a long time ago.
I should hardly dare to say it,
but my life has become hollow without you.

In secret, I miss you so terribly,
I only think of you,
only you are in my head,
like a plastic monument.

Today, I try to think past it,
I try to ignore the feeling
of being alone.

To myself I try to be true,
for today I recreate,
my life I try to renew.

Let me go, let me finally be alone.
I'm holding back from crying,
I want to be free again.
I can be alone,
and you know that as well as me
and yet why these butterflies in my tummy?

Chorus (2x)

Give back my heart you took.

Far from a "quick tips" video, we start from scratch and build knowledge of Lemur from the ground up. This is for anyone who would like to learn how the pieces of Lemur fit together by taking things a step at a time, and allowing topics to naturally flow from one to the next. There are several topics mentioned in the video which I didn't get a chance to cover yet, so if you would like another video which continues in the same manner, let me know in the comments.

REUPLOAD: The original upload of this was having some fuckery and not loading/playing back properly for myself and a couple of friends, so this is a reupload to hopefully fix that. It *was* taking suspiciously long to upload that first time....

Been a very productive couple days. Felt like quickly whipping this up after working out for a while. It's that one System Shock 1 song everyone knows for sounding like a NIN song, but I never got into listening to them outside of the Quake OST, so I wouldn't know.

Unzipped the pk3, nicked the MIDI, fed it into FOOBAR2000 with Arachno applied, recorded with Audacity, spat out in 30 seconds from Premiere. If this is an actual song from somewhere and not an original track for the jokewad, let me know and I'll check it out and put in proper song info and shiz.

I generally don't like doing back to back updates on the same piece, but it is the main one I've been working on, when I can work on things. As noted, this is a drum and bass version. Started off last night with plucking down the overdrive bass, and, while I liked the throttle of it, it made sense tonight to put it up an octave and to add a sub bass to help it have tone and rumble at the same time.

And yes, I wrote the drums and bass all on Cakewalk using the staff view. It isn't the best notation software out there, but it works well enough. Would like to see some updates to it so that it has more composition tools to work with, but, for some of the more finer tuning, I can always go back to Anvil, or maybe try Sibelius again. Though I might wait until I have enough money to update the laptop. It's getting to that 4 to 5 year mark, and part if the reason I quit using Sibelius was because its updates and general performance was having too many glitches, and I wasn't too happy with Anvil's support or payment system. Sadly, this Toshiba Satellite isn't quite as good as my previous one was, either. Might consider going back to HP. But, we'll see. Just depends on what laptop has the most optimal setup for the things I'd like to do with it.

Beginning of a recent piece. For some reason the Drum cadences come to me first, and then I build up from there. Trying to figure out a bass line and chord progression now.

I'm not sure if I was really inspired by Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, The drum line is pretty thunderous, and industrial, so, something post-apocalypse is bound to come from that.

A rather post-timely piece, given the current state of things in the world. Yet, who knows? Just like the Y2K glitch didn't cause the end of the world, I'm sure this coronavirus won't either. 😏👌

I kept the GM2 drums, but layered it with the Session Drummer's nPulse electronic VST2 kit. Added a moog base, a funky rhythm guitar, and overdrive lead. Not sure why, but the old GeoCities MIDIs often liked using flutes for leads. That just didn't sound right to me, especially for a Prince song. The piano and string and hit synths, I left on Cakewalk's TTS-1 GM2 settings.

I found this MIDI here: https://archive.org/download/archiveteam-geocities-midi-collection-2009.

The original composer is Prince

Before there was Avril Lavigne, there was Jane Child. Some might say that's a bad comparison, claiming one or the other to be more talented. Sure, Avril Lavigne is not a one hit wonder, and Jane Child could be considered a true artist for trying to keep creative control of her music, which she is said to have written and composed by herself. But, regardless which way you might choose to agree or disagree on who's the better artist, there is at least the similarity of both coming from Canada.

At any rate, this MIDI was one of several thousand of MIDIs that were salvaged before the closure of GeoCities. I'm still not exactly sure what happened. There's so much content from the early days of the internet that have been lost because of Yahoo pulling the plug on it. Truly a sad event.

What isn't so sad, despite the title, is Jane Child's 'Don't Wanna Fall In Love'. Recently I learned of this tune right here on BitChute. I was watching Night Tracks Chartbusters (MARCH 31, 1990) when the video for this song came on. It made me wonder if there was a MIDI out there for this song. As can be seen, there is.

For this arrangement, I didn't change much, other than replacing the drums with Sonic Reality's Premier Timbale kit in Session Drummer. I'm not a huge fan of the GM2's power drums, especially when having good VST2 drum kits. However, outside of changing the basses out for fuzzy and moog basses, I kept most of Cakewalk's TTS-1 GM2 synths. The Rapture Session synths are a bit too much, and the GM2 synths just worked the best for this song.

I found this MIDI here: https://archive.org/download/archiveteam-geocities-midi-collection-2009

Speaking of Zelda, here's a bit more orchestrated and extended play on a piece from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. This is a game you either love or hate. I happen to love it. For its time, it was rather bold and innovative, unlike the more recent titles in the series that are just another rehash of the games that came before.

On the music side, I changed the lead wave to trumpet. Initially when editing in Anvil, I used a combination of percussive organ with timpani with the bass wave, then added a buzz style bass synth on Cakewalk. For the chordal arpeggiated wave, a harp synth seemed appropriate. The original MIDI had no drums, so I added a fairly basic trap set rhythm that follows the bass line. The combination of bass drum, timpani, buzz bass, and percussive organ are what gives the sound that's like an orchestra hit, just not as one synth, which I really like in a composition. Yes, you can 'cheat' and use an orchestral hit synth in a piece, and it will save space and time of having to put in the layers for one manually, but this piece wasn't really that demanding to need to cut any corners on the layering. Plus it's fun to do the laying and feels so rewarding when you can hear the hits that organically fall into place because of the layering. Other than that, the extended play comes from giving a little more time for the bass, rhythm, and arpeggiation to build up to the trumpet's melody. Then there was the drop of the layers to leave the trumped 'naked' and out in the open before returning, first to the harp's arpeggiation, then the bass and percussive organ, adding back in the timpani and trap set, and one last play of the trumpet's melody to cap things off at the end.

Reviving these MIDI pieces, and adding a bit of re-arrangement of the synths and layers, is part of the fun for me. It gives me an appreciation for the initial composers that created the music, as well as for those musical fan composers that made the MIDI sequences. I make the best efforts possible to learn who the original composer is, and name them below for others that might be interested in the people that were behind the scenes creating the music that made some of these games so iconic. Also enjoyable is updating the synths from their original sounds made on the respective console they were composing for. It ought to be appreciated how difficult it could be to make game music on the NES, and especially to make it sound good and become so memorable. That one can translate them to more modern synths today is a tribute to, not only the genius of what was made then on a minimal amount of musical resource, that it can be revived and arranged for more realistic instruments today. It's also a tribute to MIDI music, and showing how it remains a vital part of composing music even today.

Crusader of Centy has been described as Sega's version of Legend of Zelda. While there are some similarities, there are some unique aspects of this game that sets it apart from Zelda.

The original version did not have drums, so I used two patterns from the Cakewalk Session Drummer that work out perfectly for this piece. I also put the chiming arpegations in the background. Beyond that, I didn't change the synths all too much and kept to Cakewalk's TTS-1 GM2 synths.

This is one of my high school era pieces from 1998. Back then, I was into trying to make music for a marching ensemble, as well as the usual pop/techno style that was popular at the time. Though I didn't really see this piece as techno at the time. The signature aspect of this piece is the panning, which the audio recording here doesn't seem to pick up on as well as I'd like it to.

On Sep 17, 2008, three anime girls, Mindy, Verá, and Nadine, now known as the Caramella Girls, bounced into YouTube as viral hit and meme that would stretch out a decade. And why not? It's an incredibly uplifting tune, with a silly, but fun dance move that countless others have covered, both in animations and in live action choreography. So yes, this is just a fun piece, which I found a MIDI file for, and decided to see what Cakewalk synths I could play with. All and all, it came out pretty well. .

MIDI arrangement can be found here: http://www.rusmidi.com/en/song/1609/

Image cover came from this awesome gif: https://thumbs.gfycat.com/GloriousGracefulCopperhead-size_restricted.gif

Original song was the creation of the Swedish band Caramell, first appearing on their 2001 album, 'Supergott'

Songwriters were: Jorge "Vasco" Vasconcelo and Juha "Millboy" Myllylä
