"Horst-Wessel-Lied", also known by its opening words, "Die Fahne hoch", was the anthem of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) from 1930 to 1945. From 1933 to 1945 the Nazis made it the co-national anthem of Germany, along with the first stanza of the "Deutschlandlied". Today it is banned nearly everywhere in Europe. The lyrics to "Horst-Wessel-Lied" were written in 1929 by Sturmführer Horst Wessel, the commander of the Nazi paramilitary "Brownshirts" (Sturmabteilung or "SA") in the Friedrichshain district of Berlin. Wessel wrote songs for the SA in conscious imitation of the Communist paramilitary, the Red Front Fighters' League, to provoke them into attacking his troops, and to keep up the spirits of his men. When Adolf Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany in January 1933, the "Horst Wessel Song" became a national symbol by law on 19 May 1933. The following year, a regulation required the right arm be extended and raised in the "Hitler salute" when the (identical) first and fourth verses were sung. "Horst-Wessel-Gedenkmarsch" was one of two marches composed by Hans Bajer in 1932 as a tribute to Horst Wessel (and they both contain the melody of the "Horst-Wessel-Lied" in trio). The opening is somber and reflective of the loss of Horst Wessel, evoking great emotion. However, later in the song the familiar melody of "Die Fahne Hoch" inspires and instills a sense of glory for what is to come. The song to this day succeeds in tapping into the emotions of any listener.
The intro section of the German war film series, Die Deutsche Wochenschau, was used from Franz Liszt's compostion "Les Preludes". The end segment of the theme also originated from the finale of the same composition. The Ministry of Propaganda believed that the music of Liszt evoked triumphant and brave emotions in both the soldiers of the Wehrmacht and civilians alike. Parts of the music heard in Die Deutsche Wochenschau were also used later in the composition "Von Finnland bis zum Schwarzen Meer", which was personally overseen by Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels upon the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

The Man in the High Castle is an alternate history novel by American writer Philip K. Dick. Published and set in 1962, the novel takes place fifteen years after a different end to World War II, and depicts intrigues between the victorious Axis Powers—primarily, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany—as they rule over the former United States, as well as daily life under totalitarian rule.
The Man in the High Castle won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1963. Reported inspirations include Ward Moore's alternate Civil War history, Bring the Jubilee (1953), classic World War II histories and the I Ching (referred to in the novel). There is a "novel within the novel", an alternate history within the alternate history where the Allies defeat the Axis (though in a manner distinct from the real-life events of the war).

In the novel's alternate history, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt was assassinated by Giuseppe Zangara in 1934 leading to the continuation of the Great Depression and US isolationism during the opening of World War II. Adolf Hitler led Nazi Germany to conquer most of Europe and the Soviet Union, murdering Jews, Roma, Slavs, and other groups. Meanwhile, Imperial Japan occupied Eastern Asia and Oceania. The Nazis then, with help of their allies, conquered most of Africa. As Japan invaded the US West Coast, Germany invaded the US East Coast. By 1947, the US and the remaining Allies surrendered to the Axis, ending the war.
By the 1960s, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany are the world's competing superpowers, with Japan establishing the "Pacific States of America" (P.S.A.) from the former Western United States and the remaining Rocky Mountain States being a neutral buffer zone between the P.S.A. and the Nazi-occupied former Eastern United States. In the East, there are two countries: "The South" is a racist puppet regime which collaborates with the Nazis. The United States of America still exists by name in the Northeast of the former territory and are controlled by a German military governor. For unexplained reasons, Canada remains independent despite being part of the Allies.
Hitler, though still alive, is incapacitated from advanced syphilis, and Martin Bormann has become Chancellor of Germany, with Goebbels, Heydrich, Göring, Seyss-Inquart (who oversees the extermination of the peoples of Africa), and other Nazi leaders soon vying to take his place. The Nazis have drained the Mediterranean to make room for farmland, developed and used the hydrogen bomb, and designed rockets for extremely fast travel across the world as well as space, having colonized the Moon, Venus, and Mars. The novel is set mostly in San Francisco. Here, Chinese residents first appear in the novel as second-class citizens and black people are slaves. The secondary setting of the novel is the Rocky Mountains States, namely the cities of Cañon City, Denver and Cheyenne.

Mass Manipulation: The Use of Internal Propaganda in Nazi Germany. How did the Nazi regime manage to manipulate the minds of its population to gain enough support to survive for over a decade and engage in perennial atrocities? A central theme through the Nazis internal propaganda operations was the emphasis on the state or community being more important than the individual. Slogans such as - ‘One People! One Reich! One Führer!’ – were relentlessly used to persuade the population to value the community over the individual. Cheap cinema tickets, radios and the introduction of the Volkswagen (or people’s car), were all designed to symbolise the triumphs of the national community.
The Nazi regime also introduced social initiatives to amplify this sense of national community. The Winter Help program was one, which consisted of collections of clothing, food and money to help those families who had been hit hardest by unemployment. Another major feature of the Nazi regime was its focus on targeting the German youth for propaganda operations. The Nazis understood that indoctrinating the young people of the country was the most effective way to ensure you had an obedient citizenry in the future. The Nazi party progressively gained control over the teaching profession until almost completely dominating it by 1937. These avenues to maintain control were supplemented by the youth comradeship organizations in the form of the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls, organizations where Nazi ideology was reinforced and Hitler was worshipped as a demigod.

With the possible exceptions of Hitler and Himmler, no man has been so vilified in recent years as the personification of Nazi evil as Dr. Josef Mengele...
In countless newspapers and magazine articles, Mengele has been routinely accused of sending 400,000 people to their deaths in gas chambers while serving as the chief physician at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1943 and 1944. The man dubbed the "Angel of Death" supposedly conducted gruesome "experiments" on selected Jewish victims and habitually delighted in sadistic atrocities. For example, according to U.S. News and World Report (June 24, 1985) he enjoyed "giving candy to children he tossed alive into the ovens while he hummed Mozart and Wagner." The Washington Post (March 8, 1985) reported that Mengele "routinely tossed babies into ovens alive" and "ordered pregnant women onto their backs, then stomped them until they aborted."
While no sane person would excuse or whitewash atrocities, no matter who commits them, a basic regard for truth and decency compels another, more thoughtful look at the Mengele legend. How much truth is there to the fantastic accusations?
Nationally syndicated columnist Jeffrey Hart told readers that he doubted many of the "monster Mengele" stories being peddled in the mass media. "... As a professional historian, I would urge some caution about many of the anecdotes that are being routinely accepted as fact," wrote Hart. "My own historical hunch is that much of this kind of thing is mythology, concocted as a kind of metaphor ... I doubt the story that he killed a women by crushing her throat with his boot. It will be a long time before scholars sift the fact from the fiction about Mengele." (The Washington Times, July 9, 1985)...
It's conceivable, of course, that Mengele could have murdered inmates, although camp officials who committed such crimes risked severe punishment. For example, the Buchenwald camp physician, Dr. Waldemar Hoven, was sentenced to death by an SS court for murdering inmates there.
The evidence seems rather clear that Mengele did, in fact, perform medical research operations on Auschwitz inmates. In this regard it's perhaps worth noting that the U.S. government conducted similar medical "experiments" both during and after the Second World War. American military physicians infected Negroes with syphilis without their knowledge as part of an investigation of new ways to treat venereal disease. And during the 1950s the CIA financed psychiatric experiments involving LSD, sleep deprivation, massive shock therapy and attempted brain-washing of hospital patients without their knowledge or consent. One survivor, Louis Weinstein, is now reportedly a "human guinea pig, a poor, pathetic man with no memory, no life." The U.S. government has been sued for redress on behalf of Weinstein and eight other persons. (The Washington Post, August 1, 1985, editorial)
Many Jews survived the war as a result of medical care in the camp infirmary, which was under Dr. Mengele's general supervision. One such person was Otto Frank, father of the famous Anne Frank. After coming down sick, Otto was transferred to the camp hospital, where he remained until Soviet troops reached Auschwitz in January 1945. When the Germans evacuated the camp shortly beforehand, they left behind those who could not move, including sick, elderly and infirm inmates, and a number of children. The most horrific charges made against Mengele, such as the tale that he tossed live babies into ovens, are sick and absurd fables that contradict what is known about the doctor's character. For example, as Time magazine reported (June 24, 1985), Mengele was "given to occasional flourishes of gallantry: after transferring a pregnant Jewish doctor to Cracow to do research for him, Mengele sent her flowers upon the birth of her son."
Mengele repeatedly insisted that he had not committed any crime, and that instead he had become a victim of great injustice. (New York Times, June 14, 1985; Baltimore Sun, June 14, 1985)

As soon as Hitler came to power in Germany on January 30,1933 he ordered that several anti-Masonic pamphlets be printed by the government and circulated among the citizenry. Among these official Nazi documents were: "Annhilation of Freemasonry", "Freemasonry, Marxism, and Judaism: The Cause of War", and the "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion".
On April 7, 1933 Hermann Goering, one of Hitler's top deputies (who had once considered becoming a Freemason) held an interview with Grand Master von Heeringen of the "Land Grand Lodge of Germany" and told him "there is no place for Freemasonry in Nazi Germany."
According to Coil's Masonic Encyclopedia, there were 638 Masonic Lodges in Germany in 1933 with 80,000 members, working under authority of 10 Grand Lodges. The largest of these were the Grand Lodge of the Three Globes, the National Grand Lodge of all German Freemasons, and the Grand Lodge Royal York of Friendship.
The Enabling Act (Ermächtigungsgesetz in German) was passed by Germany's parliament (the Reichstag) on March 23, 1933. Using the Act, on January 8, 1934, the German Ministry of the Interior ordered the disbandment of Freemasonry, and confiscation of the property of all Lodges (including all libraries and Masonic artifacts) ; stating that those who had been members of Lodges when Hitler came to power, in January 1933, were prohibited from holding office in the Nazi party or its paramilitary arms, and were ineligible for appointment in public service.
In 1934, Hermann Goering, as Premier of Prussia, ordered the dissolution of the three Masonic Grand Lodges in Prussia, the oldest and most influential in Germany. They were the Christian Grand Lodges, The Grand Lodge of the Three Globes, All German Freemasons, and Royal York of Friendship.
On August 8, 1935, as Führer and Chancellor, Adolf Hitler signed a decree demanding the immediate arrest and imprisonment of all persons who had not resigned from Masonic societies. All who were suspected of being Masonic leaders were executed, while mere members were jailed. The same evening of Aug 8, 1935 Hitler had announced in the Nazi Party newspaper, Voelkischer Beobachter, the dissolution of all Masonic Lodges in Germany. The article accused the Fraternity and World Jewry of conspiracy in seeking to create a "World Republic" (New World Order).
