How do you become a full time artist? I'll time lapse my latest painting and tell you what's going through my head as I switch from a job in film-work to starting an art career. It's a "not so" conventional approach to getting started, but the goal is clear and I'm excited share this inside look into my plans for progress.

In November 2018 I started this project after a prestudy in graphite ‘An archeological memory of Bettie Page – 13-11-18’. Obviously the canvas size of this painting is bigger than the original drawing. Therefor the balance between main theme (camel, statue and stele) and the negative space around it should show more coherence. It just felt not right to leave a lot of space while main theme was to be portrayed so lavisly.
I always have been an admirer or Jan van Eyck’s ‘The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin’. That is the main reason to add an abundancy of details in this one as well. See if I can match the quality of old master’s work.
In general I could state that in this painting i tried to employ all my knowledge and techniques on a level of creating art. Jan van Eyck could have stated: “Als Ich Can”.
For some time I hesitated to put down explanatory remarks as there is nothing worse than explaining a good joke. However I put in so many details making sense only to me as an artist as the story grew inside my mind. Hence a necessary explanation prevails over the risk of not being understood by anyone.

Second Panting
This oil painting ‘Geesje Kwak and the Secret of the Universe – 28-06-22’ is my second one. The first was Geesje Kwak – 07-07-21. Plenty of drawings though but for some reason Geesje lends herself to a grand but time consuming elaboration in oil paint. Must be her beauty as well as the lush kimonos.
Gradually Developing
When I drew the penultimate drawing ‘Geesje Kwak – 08-10-21’ I didn’t have a clue it would result in an actual oil painting. I mean, there are so many drawings to put in oil yet. It is after I made the last graphite pencil drawing ‘Geesje Kwak in Space – 20-10-22’ I had an idea developing. Then came the Risque series in between and the self-induced paiting frenzy that came sudden in February 2022. Last May I felt it was time to finally begin this one and so it came to be.
No Abstract Styling
Right from the start I knew it would be all about the light she is holding in her hands. Obviously that was the theme in the underlying drawing. So I started out incorporating certain elements of Roundism just as the drawing shows. Soon I realized this was not going to work like it did in the drawing. I simply had too much fun doing the knots in the tapestries. They had the same look as in the first painting, creating a perfect realist feel. I found the roundistic approach in the kimono simply too much of a contrast with the carpets. Next to that, thanks to the thick oil paint blobs in the tapestry I had to paint the kimono even thicker. That left me with no other option than to skip nifty abstract styling.
Iridescence
Enter the rough style of old masters like Frans Hals and Rembrandt van Rijn. You see, there was another reason to go for another style than cubist abstraction. That is the depiction of light and we are talking straight chiaroscuro here. Let the light guide you and so it did. The whole painting is built around the light orb. At one point I couldn’t made the paint thicker and lighter. In art depicting light with titanium almost is a mortal sin so I tried to glaze over it with iridescent violet. It didn’t work out though. It only became darker, even grubby. At long last I came to realize I had to repaint the orb in pristine white again and have iridescent paint radiate outwards. I happened to have my Williamsburg paints at hand. Consequently the iridescent parts around the bulb are best seen when approached sideways.

Abstracting in Oil
After the success of my initial drawing I decided to dissect Geesje Kwak geometrically even further. Surely it is an ode to abstraction in Japanese art in the first place. After kicking off the painting I came to realize it had to serve another goal as well. That was to pass the abstract as realistic. Even though the painting oozes out realism it is more abstract that it lets on. Do you agree?
Old Master Allure
One thing led to another. The rigid plains reminded me to the stiff look of portraits made by the Flemish Primitives a bit. However, the latter smoothed out plains and painted then round. Nevertheless I wanted to obtain the allure of an old master even though I do not like that qualification much. It always sounds a bit quaint to me. I only relate to old masters because of my love for refined techniques and feel for subtle and lush textures. My contribution would be to put everything I like in the mix. So it came to be that aspects of cubism, impressionism, realism and even surrealism got married in this oil.
A Fetish for Satin?
When I take on a new project I am brimming over with ideas through the process of association soon enough. Obviously many of them are inspired by many artists before me like Gabriël Metsu. At the Mauritshuis in the exhibition ‘Dutch Masters from British Country Houses’ I saw a couple of his paintings. I must admit I am a little bit jealous of his satin treatment. I happen to have a series of interference paints by Williamsburg. Not that I have employed them often, certainly now was the time to do so. Time for some serious bling-bling and do my part in satin depictions.
Enter Vermeer
Talking about inspirational sources the carpet also pays tribute to Johannes Vermeer’s depiction of tapestry, such as in ‘A Girl Asleep’. When I studied different carpets I noticed there are hairy ones and ones that look square knotted. A perfect reason to exaggerate the knots a bit in order to connect with the slight cubistic styling. Consequently the carpet resembles one from the Teyler Museum more than Vermeer’s carpet. I was there because of the Constable exhibition. I kept tapestry rugged in order to have it contrast with the fine kimono embroidery. The unsaturated brown English and Venetian reds contrast the more saturated colors in the robe. By the way the room in the back was modeled after Vermeer’s aforementioned art work. One of my favorites.

Search for Perfection
This oil ‘Melina Noëlle – 18-03-23’ is the result of a long search for perfection. Let me tell you all about it. In September last year I made a live pastel drawing in preparation of a painting. That one was followed by a colored pencil drawing in November 2022. I wanted to study color relations first. For previous considerations I made with regard to this process I refer to the link above. So now was the time to get it right. A sort of grand painting. You know how this goes when you’re starting to get serious. You quickly bite off more than you can chew.
Compositional Definition
Defining composition was easy though. I already done that in the previous two pieces. For example, the placement of the pump on the lower left and the armrest at the right in the middle. I knew I had to put them on the outer rigdes in order to get the maximum length. Hunky dory so far until I was fed up with the flowery theme from the drawing. Luckily I got another idea soon after I began painting. It’s the story behind a previous drawing ‘Slava Ukraini – 15-02-23’.
Uzory
December 19th there was this charming Ukrainian ensemble Uzory performing at Brugman Art. They come from Mykolajiv and their repetoire consists of folkore but also classic and jazz. I was teaching around the corner in the adjacent studio, listening to fine virtuoso music. After the wrap up I first came to know the deeper story. Apparently the male members came back from the Ukraine, only to return to the front after Christmas. Just to share some holiday time with their wifes in Holland. I was very much inpressed by this and I had a perfect story to complete the main theme. It would give the painting the needed deepening next to a perfect young woman to depict.
Kitsch Becomes Grand
As to the main theme, I guess I wanted to give it a lush look. I even threw in Williamsburg mother-of-pearl paints like I did in my Geesje Kwak paintings. You see, I had this foolish thought to make the ultimate kitsch. I mean, a great piece of kitsch that great so it would become wonderful to look at again. It all began when Melina sat in that white trailer parkish chair in her beautiful green dress. It spontaneously made me think of the concept of the Kill Bill movies. I think I catched Tarantino’s drift: let a script for a b movie be played by excellent actors. Kitsch becomes grand. I often think that way: some objects like the chair or shiny satin can look too much of a good think. When they become props for paintings they rub off their true value on the art work.

Love or Run?
Mother Nature holds many secrets but let me sketch you the following. All of a sudden you spot a naked woman on her own in the middle of a forest. Would you be attracted to her or would you run away screaming? Last year I saw the movie The Witch (2015) which was one of the inspirational sources to start this painting. I have put beautiful women in darker settings before like in my last Frida Kahlo painting. In this particular case I realized the attraction of a nude totally depends on the atmosphere, place and timing. At least it gives rise to mixed emotions and then some more.
Non-Romantic Art
In the past I have brought up so-called ‘romantic art’ in general and my discomfort with it. As such I planned this painting to be the opposite of romantic art. Therefor the beauty of this nude is compensated with things less obvious to the eye. I hope they will reach the spectator eventually. The model by the way is my dear friend Julia Filament, immortalized by art photographer Marco de Waal. I thank them for their beautiful reference picture. It shows a feel that stretches beyond snappy romantic shots you see so often on social media.
Positive Note
So I had the dark stuff, added animals to the scene, created mixed emotions, what else / next? It so happened I was listening to George Benson’s version of all time classic Nature Boy in the process of painting. It grew on me that the theme, after my initial darker thoughts, had to land on a positive note. Nature Boy became Mother Nature, stark naked. If you look very closely you can discover how fauna can turn into flora naturally. Such a discovery is only reserved for those who do not run away screaming but keep on looking.

I have been having fun playing with this editing software and I am learning a lot.
Maybe one day I will be good at it.
Also, I used two different phones to shoot the video. I can really tell the difference with my new phone! The camera is so much better.
This video: A couple days at my garage/loft repaint.
I figured I would just use the handheld on the trim here since I didn't have enough paint to run through the big sprayer. But, I hope I don't have to do that again. That was not easy. The handheld is quite heavy overhead.
It has been so hot that just a few minutes outside and you are soaking wet with sweat.
I have been drinking a lot of water. Also, This ladder work is very high and dangerous.
I love working outside. It can be so peaceful out in nature!
Next, I have to get up over the pergola on the other side of the building.
That should be interesting...

Today I am getting started on this project by Prepping and Sealing. Then I am getting started on the finish coats. This one will be a challenge getting to the side of this building. We will see what happens because I am not quite sure how I will get up tp the Gables. A lot of painting is critical thinking and it seems we are always trying to figure something out. How to get to high places are always a challenge when you do not have a lift. There is always a solution!
I decided to try and hook up the extension wand to the handheld. That was interesting. I have never done that before. I had the pressure blasting on this one. All the way to 9-10.
It actually worked good for getting in high places. I am still experimenting with this handheld. I think for the rest I will probably go back to using my Graco tallboy.
One of the most fun things I've painted in a while, the robe of my Plasma Pistol and Power Fist Primaris Captain.

Out At Bay Point Dr...
I have worked the last couple years on many things on this home and I am sad to see that it has been demolished. A developer bought it and will be splitting the lots to build two separate homes. It is a great location and I am sure the new homes will be beautiful. But, My heart will always be with this one! Loved this house!
Firefighters and the SWAT used it for training before it got demolished. It had an elevator in it too. Probably was good training for them. Still, I am Sad to see this happened.
Some of the house including the front door was salvaged before the demo.

Hello there friends. We are working on a 8x10 canvas. I put my version of Liquid White down first. I like this subject right now. I am surrounded by this desert grass land type landscape. I live in Washington State, The Evergreen State yet the trees around me are very sparse. There are a lot of those like sage trees and Skeleton like trees but they are not skeleton trees. I went fishing a few days ago and took a bunch of pictures and there is a lot this grass. I hope you enjoy today's video.

Hello there friends. Today we are exploring the Landscape of Eastern Washington. I don't have the big jagged mountains or the oceans. I have rolling hills of desert grass and sparse trees. For a desert there is also an abundance of water. Thank you Columbia River and Irrigation. This is a wet on wet. I started with a liquid grayish color. Its a mix of phalo blue titanium white and mars black and linseed oil. The exact mix of color is “to taste”. Then you go from there fluffy clouds and flowing grasslands. Enjoy Today's video.

Good Day my Fine Friends. Today we are going with wet on wet. What you see on the canvas at the start is liquid gray. I have Titanium White with a touch of Mars Black and a touch of Ultra Marine Blue. I mix that with linseed oil not 50/50 but close maybe 60/40 paint/linseed oil. I do not know the specifics of this crash this in my opinion only.
Sadly today another person lost their life on the roadway. A motorcycle rider at mile marker 199 in Venice, Florida.
Unfortunately accidents like this are a regular occurrence on the way home from working in Sarasota. It's a very scary drive in rush hour to say the least. There are a lot of phone zombies that drive with one hand on the phone and one on the wheel. They swerve in and out of the lanes like a drunk driver. Many times hauling trailers.
You can find me cruisin along in the slow lane listening to my favorite song because I get there when I get there!

'Ostara' - Time Lapse Abstract Painting
Hello there. Today I am working with this style of painting where you start with a really wet paint. Then you just let the brush do its thing. This style has been a challenge. I do enjoy it but it can be rather frustrating. With this painting I feel like that tree in the middle there just doesn't feel right to me. You have to keep creating. I show you the things that I am not that proud of or did not like, so you can see that not everything is a masterpiece. Nothing worth anything ever came easy. Pablo Picasso supposedly painted over 50,000 paintings. I am sure there were some stinkers in there. You just go to keep going my friends. If you put in the time and effort you will get there eventually.

Hello there friends! I have these canvases that I put gray gesso on. I was painting this one and it just made it feel like a cloudy day. I am liking this painting technique. I do think I need my paint wetter. If you have ever painted wet on wet it feels like this should be wetter than liquid white. I like the way the fan brush makes grass as well.
