"Oklahoma Spring" - 12x9” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This painting was inspired by a photo from my sister who lives in Oklahoma. The first leaves were starting to appear on the trees there and this view caught her eye, so she asked me to paint it for her. The process was smooth with little challenge and I’m fairly pleased with the end result.

"Looks Like Rain" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I kept coming across this scene when I was looking for more reference photos and thought it would make a fun painting. The unique mixture of different textures made the piece interesting and it went really smoothly until I got to the horse. He was a bit challenging and I had to rework him a few times before I was satisfied with this painting as a whole.

This video photo montage demonstrates the painting process of a landscape oil painting titled “The Creek” by the artist Nicolas Szuhodovszky.

The technique with wich it is painted is an indirect painting method consisting of multiple stages, composed of glazes, scumbles and opaque paint layers.

This was a common practice among painters from the 15th on to the19th century. It has also been called the Brown School method of painting.

Used by such renowned artists as Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano Vecellio (Titian), Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacques-Louis David, John Constable, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, just to name a few.

The method was usually divided into 3 stages:
1st layer – Grisaille/Monochrome
2nd layer – Dead Coloring
3rd layer – Final Saturated Colors and Glazes

"On the Rocks" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I really enjoyed painting “Under the Sea” and it made me want to do another beach scene. I’m actually not very satisfied with how this piece turned out. The foreground perspective was rather challenging and it still feels a bit off to me. I told Sara how much trouble I had with it so she named the painting “On the Rocks.” It was definitely a rocky experience—pun intended!

"A New Dawn" - 12x9” - Acrylic on Canvas -

For Good Friday, I wanted to do a painting with a bit of an Easter theme. Sara showed me a photo she had taken of the old Lambertville Outlet Lock and I thought it would be neat to add a door and give it a tomb-like feeling. I actually redid the foreground several times before being satisfied with it. I wanted the warm, sun-lit path to draw the viewer’s gaze toward the tomb and the mysterious light coming from inside.

"Under the Sea" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Before I got back to doing landscapes I thought it would nice to do another wildlife painting. I chose a sea turtle because they’re one of my niece’s favorite animals. I love the color palette in this piece but the detail work was a bit of a pain with all the lines in the flippers. The shell texture was also challenging, but overall, I’m happy with how it turned out.

"Chillin'" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I’ve wanted to try painting a tiger for a long time but just never got around to it. I figured now was as good a time as any! This piece was actually a bit a breakthrough for me. I wanted it to be simple but still realistic and I think I succeeded in my goal. I don’t usually enjoy painting, it’s hard work and tiring, but this piece was a refreshing change and I hope it makes my future paintings go smoother.

"Time Off" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Even after “Tranquil Path” I still felt like I needed a break so I thought it would be fun to do a calm vacation scene. The most challenging part of this piece was getting the light on the water right. I actually tried doing a boat at first but got rid of it and painted the tent and campfire instead. I’m not a huge camping fan—I’m too concerned about bear attacks—but it’d be nice to get lost in this scene for a while and I hope the viewer feels the same way!

After several wildlife paintings I wanted to get back to doing landscapes. I actually tried two scenes before this one but scrapped them because they just didn’t feel right. "Snow Day" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

It’s been a while since I’ve done any animal paintings, so I wanted to try another. This piece was inspired by all the snow we’ve had here recently. At first, I created a more detailed background, but when it detracted from the horse’s form and movement, I simplified it. This inspired me to also simplify the color palette and give the illusion that the horse was a part of the snow itself. I really enjoyed accentuating that illusion and may try a similar piece with water in the future.

This piece was a bit of an experiment. I wanted to try painting a night sky and had fun creating the stars with a splatter technique but the foreground trees felt rather flat when I was finished. "First Snow" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I was originally going to do this as a Christmas painting and tried adding ornaments and light strands to the little tree, but in the end it just didn’t fit with the piece as a whole. I’ve been itching to paint another beach scene and figured now was a great time as we head toward snowy weather. This has to be one of my favorite paintings ever! The whole thing went incredibly smoothly and I had a lot of fun with the beach and shoreline. Sara tells me it looks like a photograph and perhaps it does, but the nice thing about painting is I can change the subject however I want it to be. "Just Married" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Sara and I are getting married today! This painting was inspired by our second date at Longwood Gardens. There was actually another couple taking wedding photos there and we thought it was a fun idea. I enjoyed using the lighting to highlight the couple and give the piece a romantic quality.

"Once Upon a November" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

The first place Sara ever took me to was Goat Hill Overlook in New Jersey. It was actually a bit chilly, but we had some nice hot stew and a blanket to keep us warm. Two years later and we’re getting married so I wanted to paint this piece to commemorate our first meeting. The whole painting went pretty smoothly. The color relationships were fun to play with, although the atmosphere in the distance took a bit of reworking. Overall, I think it captures the romantic mood of that day.

"Oncoming Storm" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I wanted to paint another sunset piece that contrasted well with “Light in the Forest” and chose this scene because of the dramatic lighting and colorful clouds. The deep oranges and reds really appealed to me after so much green and yellow and the clouds were a lot of fun to create. The most difficult part of this painting was blending the range of colors in the sky but I think the end result was worth the struggle.

"Light in the Forest" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

After doing so many recognizable landmarks, I wanted to go back to a general forest scene. This image inspired me with the bright, yellow sunlight casting such dark shadows across the foreground. That contrast of light and dark made this piece somewhat challenging, but I enjoyed playing with the purples in the reflected light. Sara says I should have named this piece “Arrival” because she thinks the light looks like a UFO landing, but I’ll let the viewer decide what this “Light in the Forest” may be!

"Take a Seat" - 12x9” - Acrylic on Canvas -

The photo that inspired this painting was taken by my fiancée, Sara. We love to take early morning walks right after daybreak when the rising sun turns the leaves to a fiery orange and the towpaths are relatively empty. We usually pass an empty bench or two and on this lovely fall day we stopped and sat down to enjoy the peace and quiet together. I wanted the viewer to feel that same contentment when looking at this painting.

My mother-in-law took the photo that inspired this piece. I thought it was clever how she captured the rising sun so perfectly in the unlit lamp post and couldn’t resist painting the scene. "Fall at Tyler Park" - 5x7” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Containing over 1,711 acres, Tyler State Park is a great source of inspiration for any artist. This path can be found not far from the Schofield Ford Covered Bridge, one of twelve remaining covered bridges in Bucks County. The most challenging part of this piece was creating the illusion of distance down the path, but the bright highlights against the dark shadows made this miniature painting quick and enjoyable.

One of the most picturesque bridges in Bucks County, Loux Bridge was built in 1874 by David Sutton. Bucks was once home to over 50 covered bridges but now only 12 remain. "Autumn Snow" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I wanted to paint another snow scene, but this time with some more color. I chose this image because of the orange tree in the foreground and the contrast it created with the snow. The soft light in the back trees was somewhat difficult to achieve, but I thought it added a nice touch of mystery to this piece. I accentuated the highlights in the snow to draw the viewer’s eye from that orange tree to the soft light, to make them wonder where that path may lead to.

"Alight" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I thought it was time I tried painting some insects and wanted to try a scorpion, but my fiancée, Sara, is highly adverse to almost all forms of creepy crawlies. She told me she’d only tolerate paintings of three types: ladybugs, butterflies, and dragonflies. Since she’s not only my editor and videographer, but also my photographer, I knew if I went ahead with the scorpion, it would probably never see the light of day! In fact, I believe Sara would have probably knifed that painting when I wasn’t looking, and then blamed it on its “looking too realistic.” In the end, after finishing this piece, I realized I really don’t enjoy painting insects, which I’m sure is a great relief to Sara!

After “Morning Heights” I wanted to paint another mountain scene, but this time from a more distant angle. I really enjoyed adding the light green to give the mountains depth and the pine trees were a nice change from the oaks and maples in my usual paintings. I’ve wanted to paint a storm scene for a while now and chose this image because of the puddles in the foreground. Hi everyone,

If you enjoy this video, please subscribe and hit the notification bell as it really helps me out. Leave me a comment down below if you have any feedback or suggestions. I now have a Ko-fi page setup if you'd like to help me buy art supplies https://ko-fi.com/studiolumitar

In this video I'll be painting an A4 sketch I did recently of some succulents. I browsed a bunch of photos on a royalty free photo site and picked out a bunch of varied plants so that I would have a lot of interesting colours to work with. I'm really pleased with how this is turning out so far, and there should be a part 2 video coming up once I complete it.

In this video I discuss what I learned so far from this piece in terms of the bombay inks I'm using, and I also chat about the progress I'm making with watercolour paints. I'm using a set of Mijello Mission Gold watercolour paints, and will likely do a video about them soon once I feel confident enough with them.

Materials used in this video:
Dr. Ph. Martin's Bombay Inks, set 1 and 2
Gold Line brush size 8
WHSmith Watercolour Paper 300gsm
Lineart was done with Faber-Castell erasable pencil
Video created with Wondershare Filmora

"Brilliant Path" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This is the Delaware Canal towpath near the Thompson Neely house. It’s a beautiful place in every season, but my favorite time is in the fall when the multitude of colors creates a brilliant backdrop to the calm, tranquil water. Those same colors provide a unique challenge in autumn paintings like this one. They make it tricky to get the lighting and shadows just right, but when the whole scene finally comes together it’s a joy to see!

"Savage Predator" - 9x12” - Acrylic on Canvas -

After painting a great predator of the sea, I thought it’d be cool to paint a great predator of the sky. This eagle captured my imagination with his fierce expression and dangerous vibe. I had fun with the color scheme; playing up the blues and browns to accentuate his bright orange beak and eyes. The eyes were actually my favorite part. It was a lot of fun creating the sense of threat and danger in them.

"Silent Predator" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

To finish off this summer’s ocean series I wanted to paint another sea creature, but this time from an underwater perspective. I chose this scene because of the way the light filtered through the water and cast patterns on the sand and shark. The shark was actually challenging at first. I repainted it several times but still wasn’t satisfied with it until my fiancée suggested adding some aqua green. She was right! The whole piece came together beautifully after that and I was able to achieve a much better sense of depth.

"Across the Sea" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Before returning to land-based subjects, I wanted to try painting some sea creatures. I chose these whales because of the way the sunlight highlighted them so perfectly. At first, I tried exaggerating this highlight to bring more drama to the piece, but quickly realized that it overwhelmed the whales and wasn’t true to how real sunlight behaves. Repainting the water was frustrating, but I’m satisfied with the end result and encouraged by how smoothly the piece came together once I realized my mistake.

"Breakers" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

After how smoothly “Morning Watch” and “Evening Watch” came together, I wanted to try painting another ocean scene. This time I chose some rolling breakers. I loved the way the light passed through them creating a soft green tint. I used some deep blues in the background to accentuate that green and draw the viewer’s focus to the foamy foreground of the painting.

"Evening Watch" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

I wanted to paint a companion piece for “Morning Watch” and chose this seascape because of the brilliant oranges. Both paintings are calm and quiet and both went so smoothly it surprised me, although the clouds were a bit of a challenge in this one. I actually had fun with the water texture and felt a freedom in my style that I haven’t felt in the past. It was another great reminder that my paintings can be realistic without having to be “picture perfect!”

"Morning Watch" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

Last year I did a small series of paintings inspired by Newport, Rhode Island. The two seascapes were two of my most challenging paintings to date. I had to repaint the water multiple times before being satisfied with it. In contrast, this painting flowed so smoothly and effortlessly that it was completed in record time! I loved the simplicity of the scene but was still surprised by how simply everything came together.

"Gotcha" - 12x16” - Acrylic on Canvas -

This painting actually started out as a normal landscape. Once I had created the waterfalls however, I realized that it would be the perfect backdrop for another fantasy painting. My inspiration came from old 80s and 90s sci-fi books that my brother used to read. It was a challenge forming a believable environment but the moon and glowing green plant life was a lot of fun to create. The most enjoyable part was developing the scale relationship between the two subjects and adding detail to the tripod arm.

"Time to Go" - 12x16" - Acrylic on Canvas -

After painting numerous landscapes and wildlife of the real world, I wanted to change things up and create a world of my own. I knew I wanted to include a dragon, but scaling him relative to the horse and rider was very challenging. I also wanted to include a princess with the “knight” but ended up having to take her out because the piece was getting too complicated. My favorite part was definitely adding the fire to the dragon and the light effects to the hero. In the future I would like to return to this “world” and create a story line to go with this painting!

"Fortunata" - 11x14" - Acrylic on Canvas -

It's always nice to paint the same subject more than once. It gives me the opportunity to refine prior techniques and experiment with new ones. This fox painting was no exception. Where the fur in “Chickenhound” was more smooth and sleek, this fur was much more fluffy and texturized. I loved playing up the blues in the shadows of the white fur and complimenting them with the rich orange tones.

"Chickenhound" - 11x14" - Acrylic on Canvas -

This painting was named after a character in some young-adult books Sara and I read when we were in school. The books were about talking woodland creatures, and foxes were usually portrayed as cunning villains. I thought this red fox’s expression fit that idea rather well with his piercing green eyes. The fur textures were a bit challenging but I loved playing up the oranges against the deep purple background.

I wanted to paint this waterfall scene because of all the vibrant greens and yellows. With summer getting hotter, I wanted to paint some waterfalls to help me stay in a “cool” frame of mind. This scene struck me with its craggy rocks and refreshing pool. "Sunday Morning" - 11x14" - Acrylic on Canvas -

Bears can look so human at times, it’s a little unnerving. This guy is no exception, but it took a lot of reworking to get his face and expression just right. I wanted the whole painting to evoke a quiet contentment, like a peaceful Sunday morning just after dawn. The simple background and small flowers in the foreground were a fun touch of color for this piece.

"Mine" - 11x14" - Acrylic on Canvas -

I had to paint this bear when I saw his expression and the way he’s slumped over this rock. It’s exactly how I feel when I finish a painting…exhausted and just a bit wary. Any artistic endeavor requires a lot of energy, not just to create a piece but also to keep reworking it if necessary. This piece needed to be reworked several times before I was satisfied with it. The lighting was particularly challenging, but the highlights and contrast of the warm and cool tones were a lot of fun.

"Winter Wonders" - 12x16" - Acrylic on Canvas -

Another scene of Tyler Park after a snowfall. Here the snow carpeted the forest so thickly that all the underbrush disappeared, leaving a smooth unbroken blanket of white—the perfect backdrop for a quiet stream and waterfall. The sunlight glinting on the water and the ice-encrusted trees provide the perfect touch of magic for this piece.

This is the first snow painting I’ve done since moving to PA. Even though it’s a cold, overcast morning, I wanted to add a warmth and softness to the path, shadows, and trees. It was quiet day in Tyler Park, the snow keeping people indoors and muffling all the usual sounds of nature.

"Monday Morning" - 11x14" - Acrylic on Canvas -

This is one of my favorite paintings to date. I really enjoyed playing with the reds and blues in this lion's fur and the contrast of the light and dark sides of this his face. His pose is a lot of fun too. I almost called this piece “Growing Pains” since he seems to be an adolescent that hasn’t grown into his mane yet, but “Monday Morning” seemed to capture his expression more...just like one of us when we don’t want to get out of bed!

I’ve wanted to paint lions for a long time now but kept getting distracted by landscapes or other animals. "Nature's Outlet" - 12x16" - Acrylic on Canvas -

This is the Lambertville Outlet Lock. It was built to allow canal boats to pass between the NJ and PA Delaware Canals. They’d bring their cargo down the PA side then cross the Delaware River while attached to a cable. It was abandoned in the early 1900s and now nature has thoroughly taken it over. I love the way the setting sun illumines the old walls and gives the place a timeless quality. It made this scene a joy to paint!
