In this video, we conclude our discussion of Book 2 of Plato’s Republic by examining his theological critique of religion and contrasting it with contemporary accounts of so-called religious trauma.
After establishing the need for a guardian class, Socrates turns to the question of their education, contending that if they are to fulfill their function, the guardians cannot be taught traditional religious stories. He presents a threefold theological critique of the popular religion of his day.
His first argument turns on the goodness of God. If God is good, then he cannot perform evil. He should thus not be presented as doing so in popular religious tales. God should not get angry, hold grudges, or engage in amorous escapades. Socrates’ second argument turns on the immutability and truth of God. If God is eternal and a lover of truth, he will neither change nor lie. So, traditional religious tales are wrong in depicting him as doing so. Finally, Socrates argues that popular religious tales of demons and hell instill vice. Such stories make children cowards who flee from death at all costs. This is the very opposite of what is needed by those who would defend the city. So, such tales must also be discarded.
Socrates directed his arguments to the pagan religions of his day, but it is interesting to note that the philosophers who followed him applied the same arguments to the fledgling Christian religion. These arguments go a long way towards clarifying the bewildered contempt with which the educated world viewed Christianity. We discuss some of the key arguments from Porphyry, Celsus, and and Emperor Julian (the so-called apostate).
We then contrast this philosophical and theological critique of religion with the contemporary idea of religious trauma which has currently become fashionable. I contend that the idea of a religious trauma syndrome is problematic on three fronts. First, in adopting an amoral quasi-medical description of the phenomenon, it flattens human life. Second, it is appears to have totalitarian implications. And third, it stipulates the adoption of moral relativism as necessary for healing from religious trauma.

In this video, we continue our examination of Book 2 of Plato’s Republic by reconstructing Glaucon and Adeimantus’s defense of the Thrasymachean position that justice is an instrumental good, and thus not an intrinsic one. Together, they set forth four arguments in defense of Thrasymachus’ position.
It is important to note that they do this despite vehemently disagreeing with the position. In so doing, they highlight a central competent of Plato’s dialectical method (and the practice of philosophy more generally), viz. the ability to consider all points of view and to evaluate them from a logical perspective. This is an ability that is rapidly being lost in contemporary society, and is currently under assault on several fronts. Yet critical thinking, and the freedoms of thought and speech necessary for its social embodiment, must be cultivated and defended if we are to forestall civilizational collapse.
Glaucon’s first argument in defense of injustice is genealogical. Genealogical arguments attempt to explicate the social origins of a concept. Nietzsche’s Genealogy of Morals is perhaps the most famous of such arguments. Glaucon contends that justice was arrived at through a social contract, in which both the best case scenario—doing injustice as one pleases—and the worst case scenario—suffering injustice—were both ruled out.
Glaucon’s second argument is psychological. He claims that if we were to examine the inner thoughts and desires of both the just and unjust, we would see that they would both prefer injustice. In this way, he adopts an anthropology similar to that of the contemporary capitalist. Human nature, on this view, is marked by its desire to outperform others and by an insatiable acquisitiveness. He uses a thought experiment concerning the ring of Gyges to prove his point. This magical ring renders its wearer invisible. Glaucon claims that if it were given to a just and unjust person, they would both pursue a life of injustice.
Glaucon’s third argument is a reductio ad absurdum. He claims that Socrates position is so extreme that it leads to absurd results. If justice is an intrinsic good, then it would be worth pursuing even if all of its benefits were removed. The life of a just man who was believed to be unjust and treated accordingly would be preferable to the life of an unjust man who was believed to be just and was adored on account of it. Glaucon thinks this is absurd.
Finally, Adeimantus adds a third argument, showing that Socrates' position contradicts established tradition and religion. Society has not traditionally praised justice in itself, but the results that come from it. Indeed, it is presented as a narrow and difficult road, compared with the broad and easy one offered by injustice. Furthermore, many religious rituals concern mitigating the effects of injustice. Their concern is not with justice and injustice in themselves, but only with their effects. I point out that this holds true even for more recent religions such as Christianity. Many versions of Christianity, especially those inspired by St. Paul and Martin Luther, take the doctrine of justification by faith to be an essential component of the religion. On this view, unjust men are declared to be just by God on account of their faith in Christ’s death and resurrection. God looks at them not in light of their actual character, but as if they had lived the life of Christ. Such a concern with alien righteousness fits with Adeimantus’s contention that religion cares about the effects of justice, not justice in itself.
In order to address these arguments, Socrates suggests that we consider how justice emerges in a city. If we can see what justice is on a large scale, perhaps we might then be able to apply it back to the individual level. It is to the construction of such a city that the rest of the Republic is devoted.
