“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was directed by Hideo Kojima and Shuyo Murata. It was developed by Kojima Productions exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and was designed around the motto, ‘No Place to Hide!’. The game was released worldwide on June 12, 2008, exactly 10 years after Metal Gear Solid.”

In these clips the characters discuss a military control system called "Sons of the Patriots," in which soldiers are tagged, watched, and monitored. As part of this system, participants are injected with nanomachines to improve their performance on the battlefield and link their data. Later it is discovered that thanks to the injected nanomachines, it was also possible to control them remotely.

The convergence between identification systems, nanotechnology, brain interfaces and genetic engineering for both military and medical purposes is not very far from reality, scenarios such as those raised in this video game have already been reflected in some official documents and we could be in the eve of this convergence with advances in human genome editing, bioengineering, neuroscience, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and biometric data collection.

What role do you think the administration of chemicals made to synthetically produce a protein play along with digital identification and tracking systems on mobile devices? We could be in front of the beginning of a Sons of the Patriots, but not restricted to soldiers and military personnel, but to the whole society in every corner of the planet, either with printed QR codes or in apps that link all our personal, medical, financial, employment, and school information without which we cannot be part of "the system."
