#reselling

My wife and I have been stuck in quarantine this week after a holiday exposure! We couldn't go out to the thrift stores or estate sales per the Dr's orders so we did something different.

I got registered for an online auction happening over in Addison, Texas. The auction had a nice variety of valuables. One enormous perfume collection, a Pokemon cards lot, Chinese antiquities and more!

Watch this video to see what an online auction is like and how you can prepare ahead of time.

This week we took to the Facebook Marketplace in Fort Worth, Texas to see what kind of toys we could find. We only searched the local area, 10 miles out from my home. There were plenty of great buying opportunities.

In this video take a look at how $60 dollars could buy $400+ in toys from local sellers.

***Note: The PAW Patrol dog in the snow mobile was actually named Everest not Avalanche and the true metal PAW Patrol cars are metal on the top not the bottom. Correcting a little misinfo in the video. Thanks guys!

I have been selling and picking on and off for years as a hobby but I started getting a bit more aggressive about turning that hobby into an income stream in November 2020. I've been educating myself on sourcing methods, BOLO items, fulfillment best practices, logistics, and distribution options.

I love retail arbitrage and treasure hunting! I sell my loot through eBay or Facebook Marketplace and I'm starting to explore Amazon FBA but I'm not listing items there just yet. Let's get it!

Baubles, Boat Bars, and Highwaymen—Palm Beach Antique Fest...

The Palm Beaches are a winter playground for collectors! This huge, high quality antique show burgeons in season, with 2–4 large buildings full the first weekend each month. This video just scrapes the surface of all its wondrous vintage variety, we’ll come back to film more during the massive February extravaganza but this should whet the collector’s appetite.

Link to West Palm Beach Antique Fest: http://www.wpbaf.com/Show-Info

What a show we see, where mod Lucite furniture shares space with general store cabinets, and elegant French art deco bronzes are juxtaposed with the clunky telephones of the same era. West Palm gets dealers who don’t do the Gulf Coast shows, so we see fresh stock in silhouettes, quilts and linens, advertising and toys, along with an entire space filled with Florida Highwaymen outsider art.

What did Lincoln take to the theater the night he was shot? How did early home schoolers get curriculum to teach their kids? How can you spot fakes and fantasy items in Jadeite glass? This episode answers these and other questions, including how to drink coffee from a cup with no handle.

Last but not least, fans and buyers of Lucite purses and vintage costume jewelry get to see a huge variety of pieces representing almost every important designer name, courtesy of a couple of dealers who bring a massive amount of well chronicled examples.

Link to our Lucite purse super segment: https://youtu.be/FZRB99vid9o

A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope my review of the West Palm Beach Antique Fest helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, delights the eye and shows why people travel for a good antique show!

I’m happy to be sharing my real world vintage encounters with the online community. I love sharing our passion and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.

Here’s some more of what I find:

Copper lustre, Pietra Dura, Imari, Lucite purses, vintage compacts, patriotic embroideries, Highwaymen paintings, pickled bamboo, 1930s floor model radio, sculptures and figurines, Black Forest clock, art glass, mirrors, figural napkin rings, sewing chatelaine, vintage purses, Meerschaum pipes

Lucite and Jewels, Toys and Tribes! My Favorite Antique Show—Part Two...

Florida’s 1920s tourist destination is today’s destination for antique and vintage lovers! St. Petersburg’s annual Sunshine City Antique Show boasts such fun, fine and fabulous antique and vintage variety that we came back with this bonus episode to show more!

Take a spin with me through the grand 1926 Coliseum Ballroom, where Frank Sinatra and Count Basie once performed and Tampa Bay’s premier antique show now takes residence. This episode highlights specialty dealers from New York, New England, Canada, Michigan and the West Coast (that’s me!).

They show us real depth in collecting categories…great selections of true antique and vintage dolls, Steiff plush toys and Tonka Trucks are fun for nostalgia trippers. Bohemian handwork reveals its art deco loveliness, in forms ranging from basket lamps and vases to jewelry and tableware. Estate and costume jewelry from the last two centuries and the best Lucite purse collection I’ve experienced make this an eye popping episode.

What does a Burmese silver bowl featured by Sotheby’s have in common with a Seminole jacket (and a groovy plaid shirt)? Ponder that along with the mysteries posed by Big Little Books, and the unexpected appearance of Ronald Reagan at the show.

A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope my review of Sunshine City Antique Show and this truly special events center helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, St. Pete’s historic attractions, and the fun of attending a good antique show!

I’m excited to share my real world vintage encounters with the online community. I love sharing our passion and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.

Here’s some more of what I find:

Farm primitive pump, vintage store displays, Mexican vintage casual furniture, Native American basketry and stone tools, Snowbabies, vintage Santas, vintage Christmas, vintage dexterity puzzles, naughties nudies and bathing beauties, Vaseline glass, Chinese antiques, cameo glass, Peter Max Kentucky Derby print, Sydenstricker Glass, French art glass, American art glass, antique quilt, antique ewers, Pietra Dura

This weekend is the annual Sunshine City Antique Show in St. Petersburg, Florida, and I’m picking through my "Vintage Modern St. Pete" mall space to pack for it! How do I decide what to leave, and what to take, when both places will be so busy?

This episode gives you a teaser look at St. Petersburg, Florida’s antique district, and some of the great mid-century pieces at the uber cool Vintage Modern St. Pete antique mall. But mostly, it’s a fun review of the wide variety of things I sell in my space there, with conversation about how a dealer decides what goes to a show, what goes online to sell and what stays in the retail space.

On the way to my booth, we encounter Brutalism on one side, and a shiny happy Raymond Loewy designer set on the other side. We walk through an ocean of vintage fashion to reach my showcase, filled with Native American baskets and a rare Pre-Columbian jaguar effigy vessel.

My space is filled with art, vintage collectibles, decor and furniture, but some of these things don’t look like the other! I cull out the traditional and Victorian pieces to take to the show, while explaining why I’m leaving the amazing clock, the fab lucite lamp and the kidney-shaped table for the mall to sell. At the end, I review what I’m taking to the antique show and why.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Nashville Flea Market! I got waylaid in Florida and changed my route upon discovering an estate sale in a small town historic home. That led me to Columbus, Georgia, where I stumbled across the last day of a funky antique shop's retirement sale. Never did get to Nashville, but some fun stuff materialized in this surprise side trip, and I wanted to show it to you before it all sells!

The Victorian house estate turned up both true antiques and vintage kitchenware, from Sterling capped cut glass dresser jars and an 1890s patent pitter/corer to Pyrex Town and Country (thank you to Paula for helping me identify that pattern!). A favorite find was a 1910s print of Dickens' Pecksniff.

Antiques and vintage filled the Columbus store, and a lovely Art Nouveau desk set, FDR bookends and a surprisingly modernist McCoy vase turned up there.

I also learned (eventually) that a Stoneware vase that looked like Kentucky's Bybee Pottery is actually from Illinois. A pair of polio crutches told the story of a child's recovery, while a bank from the Harris County Stadium proved valuable for a surprisingly reason.

A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope my review of what I found in southwestern Georgia helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, and share my encounters with them in the real world. I love sharing our passion and this community, and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.

Here’s some more of what I find:

Catalina island pottery, vintage kitchenware, Fiesta, real photo baseball postcard, black amethyst blotter, bombé jewelry casket, Nehi soda band, Shriners ashtray, Chokin Ware, Golden Age postcards

Driving the Plains is much more exciting when you find vintage shopping in little towns along the way! My recent travel along a different route (Ogden to Wichita) results in this fresh pile of fab 50’s and 60’s kitsch and modernist decor, just in time to show you as I pack for my Florida winter shows!

A naughty deck of playing cards, miniature beer bottles and a pre-1964 pack of Lucky Strikes get the party going! These “sin” items may be too controversial for Kansas and Utah collectors, but will find ready buyers down south.

Modern art glass from Murano of Italy and Rainbow of West Virginia in similarly vivid colors and styles reveal their differences. A 1960s fabric school letter appears presidential! I also demonstrate how to appear as if you can play the harmonica, helped by a 1930s example.

Costs and expected selling prices punctuate the video to help aspiring resellers and collectors both understand the market. There’s also clues identifying early Sascha Brastoff and pre-1980 Zippo lighters.

A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope my review of what I found in the rural midwest helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, and share my encounters with them in the real world. I love sharing our passion and this community, and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.

Here’s some more of what I find:

1960 Rambler promo car, pocket knife money clip, 1950s barware, 1950s gas pump sign, 1950s panther, head vases, beer advertising and breweriana, Caterpillar fobs, etc.

Beautiful Venue, Beautiful Vintage at My Favorite Florida Antique Show...

Between Bay and Gulf coasts, St. Petersburg’s charming 1926 Coliseum Ballroom plays fitting host to an antique show with playful vintage fashion, mid-century modernism, kitsch and decor, Victorian costume jewelry and some truly exquisite antiques!

Sunshine City Antique Show is a longtime fixture of the Tampa Bay area antique community. I bring my best from points as far as Seattle, while other dealers come from New York, New England and Canada.

Enjoy views of St. Pete’s 1920s recreational centers as we make our way to the venue, itself a stylishly breathtaking remnant of that decade’s Florida land boom. In front of the stage where Guy Lombardo performed are rows of experienced antique and vintage dealers, with so many great specialties that we have to extend this video to two parts! (Join us Sunday for the wrap-up)

Collectors respond to this show, whether seeking Tiffany or Tiki decor! Louis Icart original prints and Lilli-Ann coats, Chinese porcelain and silver vertu tempt today’s collector. Compacts and boudoir items are matched by bronze bookends and 1950s advertising starting at $2. Resellers hear why one should buy heavy coats and Victorian furniture in Florida.

One dealer explains a source of knowledge on Early American tole trays, while another poses two puzzlers (please reach out in viewer comment if you think you know the answers).

A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope my review of Sunshine City Antique Show and this truly special events center helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, St. Pete’s historic attractions, and the collegial nature of a good antique show. I’m excited to share my real world vintage encounters with the online community. I love sharing our passion and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.

Here’s some more of what I find:

Antique and vintage dresser boxes, cloche, mid-century chrome furniture, guilloche, advertising, Floridiana, mid-century art, Florida art, automaton, Roseville Pottery, Lalique, Turner print, beaded bags

Amazing Antique Advertising! Great Graphic Designs...

We had a viewer request to focus a video on a single collecting category, and our neighbor’s space at the West Palm Beach Antique Fest was filled with beautiful, fun and vivid antique and vintage advertising! I find the art aspect of graphic arts compelling, so I took the opportunity to bring you a glimpse of this nationally recognized dealer’s stock of signs, store displays, ephemera and novelties.

Advertising was high art in the Victorian age, reflected in his stock of century-old trade cards, German die cut calendars and lovely lady trays from Vienna Art Studio. Vivid visuals were the hallmark of early 20th century pieces, and his selection for sale includes a 1930s Libby’s toy grocery store display, a flapper’s 1920s dye cabinet and big signs for popular 1930s sodas.

Advertising ephemera crosses a lot of collecting categories, from kitchenware and bookmarks to paperweights and pinback buttons. An illicit Donald Duck OJ tin bank, Victorian men sporting hipster beards and a Mr. Peanut with a sad story pop up in this video. We also discover that plastic and the Michelin Man are a lot older than expected, and Mt. Rainier is a lot younger!

Naturally, breweriana, automotive, tobacciana and other “man-cave” items are well represented, with striking and colorful beverage and tip trays, tins and other premiums. A large collection of shot glasses you might not have recognized as being pre-Prohibition could help you spot deals at a thrift store or estate sale. Pricing is provided at points along the way to give you a sense of the retail market for these graphic and decorative wares.

A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope showing you how old-time advertising applied art to sell otherwise mundane products helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, and share my encounters with them in the real world. I love sharing our passion and this community, and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.

Here’s some more of what I find:

Store counter jars, oil cans, Hamm’s Beer bear, Victorian tins, license plates, Syroco Wood, pencil toppers, tops, Coca-Cola, poison bottles, Ammo carton, condom tin, antique whiskey jug, bottles, Teddy Roosevelt cigar box, Kellogg’s buttons

Flea markets, consignment stores, vendor malls and a crazy shop full of oddities fill Clarksville…I’m shopping like crazy for my winter shows in Florida and you get to freestyle eight different shops with me! Tenacity is the name of the game, after turning up nothing at the consignment and flea markets, we stumble onto a fun haul and a good lead. In the end we have a look at a lot of fun, bizarre and unique vintage items, and go home happy :)

You’ll also get to see how the Antique Nomad wanders (the wrong way!) and why he should take remedial Spanish.

Had a lot of fun at an old freight house with 1980s vintage toys! Mom’s Christmas dishes you thought were new turn out to be vintage. Booths with a plethora of fakes and new stuff offer lessons to the wise collector and reseller.

Then quite suddenly, am encounter with a resuscitation practice baby leads us on a trip into an Oddly Amazing world of vintage medical items, specimens, Muertos figures, even a fossilized vertabrae! This hip and groovy shop ends up being the find of the day for its funky take on kitsch and cool vintage.

A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope my driving tour to eight different shops helps you learn more about antique and vintage items and share my encounters with them in the real world, sharing our passion and this community and helping each other with our antique education.

Here’s some of what I find:

1980s brass furniture, 1970s rattan furniture, Hall China, 1950s horse lamps, clocks, antique church pews, Roseville Pottery, Metlox Poppytrail dinnerware, cast iron cookware, Soda fountain collectibles, vintage toys, traffic lights, 1970s pottery, vintage industrial, velvet paintings, vintage games, vintage pins, vintage stereo equipment, vaseline glass, uranium glass, vintage bookends, painted furniture, birds eye maple, Playboy puzzle, salt and pepper shakers

Join me and explore two more sections of the giant Renninger's Antique Extravaganza! This show at Mt. Dora, FL was great for selling, and in part 2, I’m out looking to buy stuff from the other thousand or so dealers selling at this show.

There’s tons of antique, vintage and flea market finds here, and you’ll get to see a bunch of great stuff! It’s so big that part 2 covers just the south part of the flat section and one pavilion…we’ll come back and film more here in January, it’s just unbelievably vast.

In this episode, I pick up a cool Brady Bunch colored yard windmill, compare American stained glass to English, find an 1852 Swedish dowry chest and point out some new fake cast iron figures. We also come across a vivid, beautiful and nostalgic (and yes, high-end) collection of early store display machines and advertising. A list of other highlights follows below…

I hope my walk through this huge show helps you learn more about antique and vintage items and share my encounters with them in the real world, sharing our passion and this community and helping each other with our antique education.

Here’s some of what I find in part 2:

Blue mirrored furniture, authentic soda and petroliana signs, railroad lanterns, woodworking tools, galvanized steel; Art Nouveau sculpture in ceramic; American primitives and crockery; Hollywood Regency boudoir decor; Florida themed garden decor; beer memorabilia; Royal Bayreuth and Loetz; 1950s kitchenware; McCoy pottery; silver; modernist wall sculptures and paintings; chandeliers; Heywood Wakefield; classical European furniture.

Come shop with me and see my space at Renninger's Antique Extravaganza! I joined over 1000 other dealers and brought a van full of antiques and vintage goods. It's so big that just showing my "neighborhood" of the show took all of part 1!

Just in my little area, we'll see a bunch of great stuff, including tons of vintage Christmas, nautical items, lunchboxes, advertising signs, Blenko modernist glass, even a giant clam shell! This huge antique show and attached flea market brings shoppers and tourists from all over Florida, and sellers from around the world…stained glass from England, real French Provincial furniture and more.

I hope my walk around will help you learn more about antique and vintage items I find, sharing our passion and this community and helping each other with our antique education. Items I brought include Fenton, Metlox Poppytrail dinnerware, Native American baskets (including a Paiute cradle board), dolls, Murano glass, ephemera, costume jewelry, boudoir items, etc. We’ll see spaces filled with ships lanterns, toys, stamp machines, architectural salvage, antique wicker, Christmas trees and blow molds, floats and buoys, aluminum kitchenware and Venetian glass. Highlights include a 1910s balance scale, enamel store signs, modernist stools, even a folk art popsicle stick lamp!

I had the good fortune to get a collection of Golden Age of Postcards this week, from the age when early offset lithography was used by leading artists to make beautiful examples for every holiday and novelty. Join me to see several dozen examples, and discover how these lovely mini-portraits came to be a huge worldwide mania just before WWI.

Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and all other major holidays are illustrated by this great collection of vintage postcards, along with humor and novelty cards, postmarks, stamps and correspondence. I'll explain what I look for as a reseller, and help you know what names are important in early postcards, how they were made so elegantly and why people love them today!

As a reseller, this vintage and antique mall has long been a favorite stop of mine when cross country antiquing, and you’ll see why! It’s a cut above the norm in terms of quality and variety, and I always find things I can afford.

I was delighted to find that despite my late arrival (4:30 pm), the mall apparently has an after hours event the third Friday of each month! Lots of dealers had sales just that evening, and it was busy...I closed the place down and was last one out three hours later.

Boise took off in the 1960s-70s, so those decades are well represented in everything from art to furniture, which always makes me happy. They also have a lot of 1950s western items, and just a ton of different categories of true antiques and vintage goods. The 200 year old Georgian Jewelry is special and seldom seen outside high end antique and jewelry stores.

Anyhow, there’s no need to go on about it, it’s a great spot and a source of inspiration to vintage hunters, so watch the video and see for yourself!

This bonus round shows what it's like to shop at a full service antique and vintage show. Join me as I scour the recent Collectors Carnival show in Princeton, Indiana for values on vintage finds, with what I look for and a few tips on how to spot bargains. A fab 50s Lucite purse, an antique World's Fair match safe, vintage costume jewelry and some other selections come my way, along with a different kind of "necklace" with a funny story.

Tour the Northwest's Vintage/Antique trading center with us! Since 1986, Centralia Square Antiques has filled the town's 1920s Elk's Lodge/Hotel with quality pieces not often seen in antique malls. Antique and vintage advertising, signs and store displays are abundant here. Other highlights include a space filled with high-end 1930s Art Deco lamps, streamlined decor and designs by Bel Geddes; a wide variety of Native American basketry and jewelry. High-end costume jewelry, art glass, toys and quality carved American oak furniture make this a colorful and fun stop, halfway between Seattle and Portland in the midst of Centralia, Washington's 450-dealer antique district. USA Today ranked this among the top 20 antique towns in America last year, for good reason!

What's Hot and What's Not in Collecting Now? This two-part presentation tells this nomad's view of the antique and vintage market, in terms of things found in estate and downsizing sales and old collections coming back on the market.

Join the show-and-tell as we use recent finds from estates in the Northwest, Florida and along the Ohio River to illustrate once popular collecting categories that have fallen from favor (and in value). We explain why traditional tastes in antique furniture, vintage china and porcelain, elegant and depression glass are harder to sell these days, and suggest ways to find new homes for old collections. We also debunk the myth of so-called "limited" editions.

The development of this presentation is a response to the many questions I'm asked as a certified appraiser of antiques and personal/household property. My hope is that it will help people who amassed or inherited collections from a time before online selling understand what the market is today, and how to send items they can no longer keep to the right places.

Enjoy highlights from Spokane's autumn Custer's Antique Show! Basketry, stone tools and turquoise from Northwest and Southwest tribes feature in several booths, along with 1920s–1950s western-themed clocks, calendars, cafe ware and pop culture items. Spokane's Victorian and Craftsman era homes attract high quality silver, porcelain and art glass dealers to this show, while its modernist legacy from hosting Expo '74 World's Fair reflects in the show's Blenko Glass and mid-century bar signs.

Join The Antique Nomad at the 1912 Packwood Hotel and tour two adjoining fields devoted to antique, vintage and repurposed goods. Vintage saddles, cast iron and primitives contrast with Victorian glass, mid-century pottery and a collection of Royal Copley...a small taste of the wares peddled along WA Hwy. 12 during the massive Packwood Flea Market, a happening every Memorial Day and Labor Day for the last half-century.

The Antique Nomad presents a tent full of antiques and vintage at the Packwood Flea Market, the mile-long Labor Day highway sale just below Washington’s Mt. Rainier on Hwy 12. A uniquely hand carved 1840s German whip socket, a working 1930s cash register, logging camp items and a large collection of antique and vintage Native American and Alaskan wares are among the merchandise I’ve accrued for this rural junk fest that draws 20,000 travelers and vintage collectors twice a year.
