KATHERINE CHILJAN is an independent scholar who has studied the Shakespeare authorship controversy for over 30 years. Soon after graduating from UCLA (BA history), she saw a TV debate on the topic, and found that the traditional Shakespeare’s case for authorship weak, and the 17th Earl of Oxford’s case convincing. Afterward she started doing her own research. In 2003, she debated English professors on the authorship question at the Smithsonian. Eventually, she authored Shakespeare Suppressed: The Uncensored Truth About Shakespeare and His Works in 2011 (reprinted 2016); it earned her an award for distinguished scholarship from Concordia University, Portland, OR. Chiljan was a contributor to Contested Year (2016), which revealed serious errors in a book about King Lear by a prominent Shakespeare professor.
Chiljan regularly contributes articles to the Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship’s journal and newsletter, and currently is a board member for the Shakespeare Authorship Coalition.

Soliloquy of Prospero from "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare.

More about The Tempest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tempest
Prospero: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospero

"Our revels now are ended: These our actors—,
As I foretold you—, were all spirits and
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind: we are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep." — The Tempest, Act 4, Scene 1

One of the great voices for Shakespeare preserved on audio, Valentine Dyall reconciles France to English union as the Duke of Burgundy. A speech sometimes yielded ironically, as pleonastic (too wordy), Dyall and director Laurence Olivier rather find real poetry in its images of decay and rebirth.

“Let me have war, say I:
it exceeds peace as far as day does night;
it's spritely, waking, audible, and full of vent.
Peace is a very apoplexy, lethargy; mulled, deaf, sleepy, insensible;
a getter of more bastard children than war's a destroyer of men.”

To the whole race of mankind, high and low!

And thou shalt have more

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then, the whining school-boy with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then, a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden, and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then, the justice,
In fair round belly, with a good capon lined,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws, and modern instances,
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
(Jaques, Act 2 Scene 7)

I have heard it said, unbidden guests
Are often welcomest when they are gone.

This jarring discord of nobility,
This shouldering of each other in the court,
This factious bandying of their favourites,
But that it doth presage some ill event.

"‘Tis better to be lowly born,
And range with humble livers in content,
Than to be perked up in a glist’ring grief,
And wear a golden sorrow."

"Love thyself last: cherish those hearts that hate thee;
Corruption wins not more than honesty.
Still in thy right hand carry gentle peace,
To silence envious tongues. Be just, and fear not:
Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s,
Thy God’s, and truth’s; then if thou fall’st, O Cromwell,
Thou fall’st a blessed martyr!"

"Anger is like
A full-hot horse, who being allow’d his way,
Self-mettle tires him."

Every subject’s duty is the king’s, but every subject’s soul is his own.
(King Henry, Act 4 Scene 1)

This story shall the good man teach his son,
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother.

"No legacy is so rich as honesty."

"All's well that ends well, still the fine's the crown;
Whate'er the course, the end is the renown."

"Even so it was with me when I was young.
If we are nature’s, these are ours. This thorn
Doth to our rose of youth rightly belong.
Our blood to us, this to our blood is born:
It is the show and seal of nature’s truth,
Where love’s strong passion is impressed in youth.
By our remembrances of days foregone,
Such were our faults, or then we thought them none."

And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing to attempt.

Poisons more deadly than a mad dog’s tooth.

I to the world am like a drop of water
That in the ocean seeks another drop,
Who, falling there to find his fellow forth –
Unseen, inquisitive – confounds himself.

“Never durst a poet touch a pen to write
Until his ink was tempered with love's sighs.”

“What is the end of study? let me know.
Why, that to know, which else we should not know.
Things hid and barr'd, you mean, from common sense?
Ay, that is study's godlike recompense.
Come on, then; I will swear to study so,
To know the thing I am forbid to know:
As thus,--to study where I well may dine,
When I to feast expressly am forbid;
Or study where to meet some mistress fine,
When mistresses from common sense are hid;
Or, having sworn too hard a keeping oath,
Study to break it and not break my troth.
If study's gain be thus and this be so,
Study knows that which yet it doth not know:

“If I can get him once upon the hip,
I will feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him.”

"The quality of mercy is not strained;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'T is mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown:
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there."

“The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music.”

“An evil soul producing holy witness
Is like a villain with a smiling cheek,
A goodly apple rotten at the heart.
O what a goodly outside falsehood hath!”

[NICK]
Oh, God, I hate Shakespeare
That's right, I said it

[NIGEL (spoken)]
No!

[NICK]
I do, I hate Shakespeare

[NIGEL (spoken)]
Why?
[NICK]
I just don't get it
How a mediocre actor from a measly little town
Is suddenly the brightest jewel in England's royal crown?

Oh, God, I hate Shakespeare
His plays are wordy, but
Oh, no, the great Shakespeare
That little turdy, he has no
Sense about the audience
He makes them feel so dumb
The bastard doesn't care that my
Poor ass is getting numb

[MALE ENSEMBLE]
How can you say that? How can you say that?

[NICK]
It's easy, I can say it 'cause it's absolutely true

[MALE ENSEMBLE]
Don't be a penis, the man is a genius

[NICK]
His genius is he's fooling all of you
You might also like
God, I Hate Shakespeare (Reprise)

Hard to Be the Bard
Wayne Kirkpatrick
Bottom’s Gonna Be On Top
Wayne Kirkpatrick
[NIGEL]
But he's brilliant, what majesty flows from his pen
His poetry soars like a sweet violin
God's own inspiration, like lightning doth strike him
And he captures my soul

[NICK (spoken)]
Aw, jeez, you sound just like him!

[NIGEL (spoken)]
Really? Thanks!

[NICK]
You should hate Shakespeare

[NIGEL]
Well, I don't, I try to emulate Shakespeare

[NICK]
Well, there's your problem, you're so blinded by The Bard
Who's such a pompous little man

[NIGEL]
Why is it a problem to admit that I'm a fan?

[NICK]
'Cause he's a hack with a knack
For stealing anything he can
[MALE ENSEMBLE]
How can you say that? How can you say that?
The man really knows how to write a bitchin' play
You wish you could pen one, we wish we were in one

[NICK]
I just wish that he would go away

[NIGEL (spoken)]
Well, that's not gonna happen because everybody I know says that he is the greatest writer that England has ever known

[NICK]
And that's another thing I hate about Shakespeare
Is all the twits who bloviate about Shakespeare
And how they prattle on
About his great accomplishments, well la-di-da-di-da
And once they start the gushing
There's no stopping them and then it's
Blah-blah-blah-blah-blah Shakespeare
And he walks in it's
Dum-de-dum-ta-da Shakespeare

He's holding court and they say
"Will, you're such a genius and your writing is divine
'A rose by any other name' is such a clever line"
And they're all "ooh" and he's all "stop"
And they're all "yay" and I'm all "*retch*!"
And I'm really getting sick of it
And oh, oh, oh
Oh, I hate Shakespeare

[MALE ENSEMBLE]
I think by now, we sort of know you hate Shakespeare

[NICK]
Shmakespeare!
The way he feigns humility
When all he does is gloat
The way he wears that silly, frilly
Collar 'round his throat

The poster child for why
No one should ever procreate
Let me make a shorter list
And I will give it to you straight
Every little thing about Shakespeare
Is what I hate

[MALE ENSEMBLE]
Hates, he hates
He clearly surely, really, truly
Hates Shakespeare

[NIGEL (spoken)]
Don't hate!

God Didn't Give Me a Week's Notice
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Didn't_Give_Me_a_Week's_Notice

God Didn't Give Me a Week's Notice is a 15-minute documentary by Richard Dailey about Margaret Holloway, also known as "The Shakespeare Lady" of New Haven, Connecticut.[1]

Richard Dailey attended Bennington College at the same time as Margaret Holloway. He was three years behind her and their acquaintance was casual. She was very talented and well known on campus. When he found that she was homeless and performing for tips on Whitney Ave in New Haven, Connecticut, he asked if he could record her performances and she agreed. He and Holloway worked two weeks to produce a 15-minute documentary. He then spent the next six months editing the material from his home in Paris.

As reported in the Yale Daily News, December 7, 2001

Set to jazzy music, the film features Holloway dramatically reciting several pieces from Euripides, Shakespeare and Chaucer. Dailey also recorded Margaret speaking about her life. Interspersed through the documentary are candid and telling stills of Holloway in various locations in New Haven.

Dailey made a handshake agreement with Holloway that any revenue produced by the film would be divided equally between the two of them. The Yale Daily News reported that the Dec. 9 2001 benefit screening at York Square Cinemas on Broadway was an exception. All of the proceeds from that show would be donated to Holloway. It is unknown how much money was raised.

In the documentary, lines from Holloway's 1980 thesis run sporadically across the bottom of the screen.

"Many artists have aspired to a theater of hunger," Holloway wrote.

"Many were imprisoned, driven insane, etc. These artists know that there is no separation between the quest toward a theater of hunger and a quest toward a way of life. We continue in this quest."

Are Shakespeare and Shakespeare enthusiasts plotting to overthrow the British government and establish a totalitarian state? Find out in this video! Certainly some in Britain's establish think that some very naughty non-progressive people are using Shakespeare for nefarious purposes. Prevent, a counterterrorism think tank in Britain, has labelled Shakespeare, Tolkien, Orwell and Joseph Conrad as right-wing radical reading material. In this video I investigate just how radical Shakespeare really is.

A 2nd clip from Welles' timeless, not topical, Gothic treatment of Shakespeare's play Macbeth. The clip is selected to highlight Welles' great choice of players for the witches, or rather Weird Sisters (or Weyward Sisters, folio spelling playing on 'wayward', misled or misleading).

The Three:
Brainerd Duffield (also First Murderer)
Lurene Tuttle (also Gentlewoman)
Peggy Webber (also Lady Macduff)

Adaptations of Shakespeare's plays to temporal political agendas are a matter of artistic license, but we may criticize them for being faddish and gratuitous, as they so often are. Perhaps Welles did that once or twice himself, arguably, but here he relieves us with a richly Gothic realization of Macbeth, restoring the psychological and cosmic themes to central importance.

So...can the majesty, drama and subtlety of a William Shakespeare play be condensed into a 12 minute Silent film?

Well, early creator Percy Stow was determined to give it his best. Co-founder of the Clarendon Film Company, the director, influenced no doubt by Pathe Films and their effects-heavy shorts, translated the Bard's work from the long and dialogue-heavy scenes made for the stage into a more action-heavy, condensed work with dynamic camerawork and quick changes of scene. Despite a minuscule budget, the scenery is passable, the jump-cut effects decent and the acting, while still in 'play to the Cheap seats' mode, pretty good IMHO. There is easily enough of the original play left in this 12 minute film that one could easily write an accurate book report on the subject.

As a modern viewer and a fan of Shakespeare, I must admit to riffing a bit of the dialogue as I watched the Abbreviated play:

Ferdinand-Hey, a Hot girl!
Miranda-Oooh, a Hot guy! C'mere you...
Prospero-Too soon, too soon! Go move some logs!
Ferdinand-Er, say what now?
(yes, i'm easily amused...)

The audiences of the day certainly believed that Stow had done well-both the director and his company went on to create over 250 films before closing its doors in 1913-and this short survived the decades in near-pristine condition, ready to entertain new generations...B&W, Soundtrack.

The story of the exiled Duke of Milan and his daughter who live on an enchanted island. Other inhabitants of the island are the savage and deformed Caliban and a sprite named Ariel who had been freed from imprisonment in a tree. One day the duke sees a ship at sea and calls up a tempest to wreck it and brings the survivors ashore to find they are relatives. He decides to get revenge on his brother who helped the King of Naples usurp the duke's throne.

The magician Prospero tosses and turns in his sleep while a violent storm tosses a ship on the ocean. Prospero awakens with a start as lightning strikes the ship, and summons his servant, the spirit Ariel. Ariel tells Prospero the details of the storm, which was an illusion he created at Prospero's command to lead the King of Naples (Alonso) and his crew to the island and trap them there.

9-19-22 Allen Cardoza Interviews Paula Marantz Cohen
https://drexel.edu/pennoni/center-for-civil-discourse/overview/
http://answers.network

An award-winning scholar and teacher explores how Shakespeare’s greatest characters were built on a learned sense of empathy.

While discussing Shakespeare’s plays in her university classroom, Paula Marantz Cohen discovered that they unlocked a surprising sense of compassion in both herself and her students. In this short and illuminating book, she shows how Shakespeare’s genius lay in his ability to arouse empathy, even when his characters exist in alien contexts and behave in reprehensible ways.

In her new book, On Human Kindness, Paul Cohen takes her readers through a selection of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, including Hamlet, Othello,King Lear, and The Merchant of Venice, to demonstrate the ways in which Shakespeare thought deeply and clearly about how we treat “the other.” Cohen argues that only through close reading of Shakespeare can we fully appreciate his empathetic responses to race, class, gender, and age. Wise, eloquent, and thoughtful, this book is a forceful argument for literature’s power to champion what is best in us.

Talk August 2021: Who really wrote the plays? Whatever the answer, we’re coming up to the 400th anniversary of the World’s Greatest Literary Hoax. In 1623, when the plays were published, Ben Jonson wrote a preface intimating that an illiterate trader from Stratford-on-Avon called William Shakspeare – who could not read or write – was the author!

The entire Stratford-on-Avon tourist industry is a complete hoax!
Why did the Author(s) wish to maintain a low profile?

Scop Ep. 2/7 RadEthelWynn
(Indie, Folk, Pagan, Traditional)
Lyrics- William Shakespeare...
Sometime a keeper here in Windsor forest
doth all the winter time at still midnight
walk roundabout an oak with great ragged horns
and there he blasts the tree and takes the cattle
and he makes a milch kine yield blood
and shakes a chain in a hideous dreadful manner
and now you've heard of such a spirit and well you know
the superstitious idle headed elder received
and did deliver to our age
this tale of Herne the Hunter for a truth...
