California congressman Eric Swalwell has refused to say whether he had a s***** relationship with a Chinese honeytrap spy because it is 'classified' as he blames President Trump for the revelations.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr described him as a 'threat to national security'.
It was reported by Axios on Monday that a Chinese national named Fang Fang or Christina Fang - allegedly an operative for China’s Ministry of State Security - targeted a group of Bay Area Democrats - including the congressman.
Swalwell had immediately cut off ties with her in 2015 when U.S. intelligence officials briefed him on their security concerns.
The congressman said said he first became aware that Axios was looking into Fang's activities in July 2019, around the time he was ending his brief bid for the Democratic presidential nomination - during which he was a strong critic of the president.
'I’ve been a critic of the president. I’ve spoken out against him. I was on both committees that worked to impeach him,' Swalwell said in an interview with Politico on Tuesday, questioning the timing of the revelations.
While Fang interacted with other current members of the House - including Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), as well as other promising politicians - Swalwell believes the information was leaked to target him.
'The timing feels like that should be looked at,' he said. 'What it appears though that this person — as the story reports — was unsuccessful in whatever they were trying to do.
'But if intelligence officials are trying to weaponize someone’s cooperation, they are essentially seeking to do what this person was not able to do, which is to try and discredit someone.'
Politico reported that Swalwell refused to answer questions on his relationship with Fang, but did say that he was not concerned that the controversy would jeopardize his seat on the House Intelligence Committee.
'As the story referenced, this goes back to the beginning of the last decade, and it’s something that congressional leadership knew about it.'
Tucker Carlson on Tuesday night said his team had asked Swalwell's office whether the reports of a s***** relationship with Christine Fang were true, but his office declined to comment, citing national security.
Carlson's claim echoed that of Donald Trump Jr on Monday, who repeated his accusations on Tuesday night.
Trump Jr also told Carlson's show that Swalwell was a threat to national security.
Swalwell, 40, is the most high-profile figure to be swept up in the bombshell story of Fang, who between 2011 and 2015 targeted rising political stars in the Bay Area and across the country who seemed destined for nationally important roles.
Swalwell is currently a member of the House Intelligence Committee, and played a high-profile role in the impeachment of Donald Trump.

A suspected Chinese Intelligence operative developed substantial ties with California law makers as part of a political operation at the direction of China’s Ministry of State Security, it has been revealed.
An exclusive report detailing the alleged work of Chinese national Fang Fang, or Christine Fang, was published by Axios.
Fang reportedly targeted budding politicians, including a US congressman, in California's Bay Area and across the county from 2011 to 2015.
During her time in the US, Axios reports that Fang had her sights set on Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, one of the youngest members of the House.
Fang reportedly interacted with Swalwell at several events, helped fundraise for his re-election campaign and helped put at least one intern into his office.
The alleged operative also fundraised for Tulsi Gabbard, as well as had a romantic or s***** relationship with at least two US mayors from the Midwest.
Fang's suspected operations ended during the Obama administration when she fled the US amid a FBI counterintelligence probe. They first discovered Fang while reportedly surveilling a different person.
Axios noted that the investigation provided another look into Beijing's efforts to influence US political groups.
Concerns about Beijing's influence in the US has troubled the Trump administration and will likely continue into the Biden administration.

President Donald Trump has tweeted video of a Chinese professor suggesting that China has managed to influence U.S. policy for decades thanks to a special network of relationships with people at the upper echelons of American power.
The video, which had originally been posted on Weibo but has since been removed from Chinese social media according to Fox News, depicts Di Dongsheng, a professor and associate dean of the School of International Studies at Renmin University in Beijing.
Tucker Carlson shared a clip at the top of his show on Monday evening.
In the video Professor Di suggests that China has managed to influence American policies for decades through a special undercover network of 'old friends' who were at the highest levels of the U.S. government and financial institutions.
Di notes that everything changed the moment the Trump administration came to power.
Although Di said he was unable to give specific details without compromising the identities of those involved, he revealed how President Trump's trade war with China caused huge upset over ties that had been nurtured for decades between Washington and Beijing.
'Trump waged a trade war with us. Why couldn't we handle him? Why is it that between 1992 and 2016 we always resolved issues with US? Did you guys know?' Di asked the Chinese audience in his 18 minute long presentation.
'Now, I'm going to drop a bomb: Because we had people up there inside America's core circle of power, we had our old friends,' said Di, noting that he needed to speak carefully so as not to reveal the identities of those involved.

The latest number is Tomas Koroa. His life at first appears clean, but then he robs a jewelry store in under ten seconds, revealing he is an international thief. Shaw, having just walked out of her old job as a wheelman, has her interest piqued by Tomas. Fusco and Reese get one of his members arrested on a drug charge, enabling her to join his gang. Shaw helps rob a safe, which unexpectedly contains not jewels but a deadly virus (Marburg, or "MARV"). The other gang members have been paid off to betray and kill Tomas. Their attempt fails, but they take the vials. Shaw offers to help Tomas, who wants to make things right and says he would never have accepted the job if he had known what he was stealing. Shaw tracks the virus to a secure storage facility, then realizes that two government operatives are doing the same thing—she recognizes one as a former apprentice of hers. Finch, aware that the whole operation is now 'relevant', contemplates he and his team retiring from the pursuit, but decides to keep going. In the meantime, Shaw and Tomas attempt to break into the storage facility to get the vials, but they are confronted by one of Tomas' teammates, who had been presumed dead, but was behind the theft of the virus in the first place. A gunfight ensues between Shaw, Tomas, Tomas' rivals, and the government operatives. Shaw and Tomas escape with the vials, but are then caught by Shaw's former apprentice. He lets them go when he sees the vials. As the operatives move on to their next mission, Shaw's ex-apprentice deletes the CCTV video showing him letting Shaw escape. In the final scene, Samaritan retrieves the doctored video, and starts repairing it, with its screen focused on Shaw's blurred face. In a separate plotline, at The Machine's prompting, Root and Finch investigate software engineer Jared Wilkins, founder of new nonprofit OTPS and recipient of a $12 million grant from Governor Dawson (who last appeared in "Prophets" and is being assisted by Greer and Samaritan). Root becomes nanny to Wilkins' son, and she and Finch discover that OTPS stands for One Tablet Per Student, an effort to give every New York student a 3D-printed tablet for educational use. Believing the tablets to be powered by Samaritan software, Root and Finch infiltrate Wilkins' facility and plant a virus which overheats the 3D-printers inside and ultimately destroys the building. As they leave the scene, Finch reveals to Root that the tablets' code was benign and not malicious. He wonders out loud whether the path they are on to fight Samaritan is indeed the right one and how much wrong they are willing to do to achieve it.

It is difficult to find a moral high ground when it comes to spying, but Pollard’s friends pretend that the espionage was carried out to help a small and vulnerable ally better defend itself. There is no evidence that Pollard ever thought in those terms himself, and the Pentagon investigation concluded that he was only motivated by money. He reportedly wanted to get rich and before he approached the Israelis he offered to sell his information to several other countries, including Pakistan and then-under-apartheid South Africa. After Pollard was caught, he pleaded guilty to one count of mishandling classified information and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987.
Over the years since Pollard was sentenced I have had the good fortune to speak to several former senior intelligence officials who were involved in doing the damage assessment of what the Israeli spy exposed. They were sworn to secrecy on the details of what actually occurred but were able to make some general comments. They agreed on several points, namely that Pollard was the most damaging spy bar none since the Rosenberg espionage ring betrayed U.S. nuclear secrets to the Soviets in the 1940s; that Pollard exposed entire intelligence collection and deterrent systems that had to be recreated or abandoned at a cost of billions of dollars; and that Pollard, who has never shown any genuine remorse for what he did, should never be released from prison.
When Pollard was awaiting sentencing his lawyers sought to influence presiding Judge Aubrey Robinson into agreeing to minimal jail time, claiming that the espionage was really only a misguided bid to aid a beleaguered friend and ally Israel. Pollard’s wife Anne also appealed directly to the Jewish community to support her and her husband, claiming on “60 Minutes” that “our moral obligation was as Jews.” Secretary of Defense Cap Weinberger responded to the pleas by submitting to the judge a letter, which is still classified, detailing precisely the immense damage that Pollard had done. After reviewing the letter, Judge Robinson refused to consider any mitigation and immediately sentenced Pollard to the maximum possible sentence.
In January 2014, M.E. “Spike” Bowman, who was at the time the liaison between the Departments of Defense and Justice and coordinator of the damage assessment, wrote an op-ed entitled “Don’t Trust This Spy” for the New York Times and also provided his assessment of Pollard in a paper presented at the March 7th2014 National Summit to Reassess the US-Israel Special Relationship. Bowman confirmed the unique damage done by Pollard, observing that there has been no other American spy who provided “information of the quantity and quality that Mr. Pollard has.” To cope with the volume, the Israelis had to install high speed copiers in a safehouse apartment they used with Pollard and it is estimated that he stole 360 cubic feet of documents, enough to fill a room. And it was nearly all information that was beyond secret, meaning top secret and SCI or codeword, which is the most sensitive information that the United States government possesses. The Israelis were delighted and were able to request specific documents from a Defense Intelligence Agency catalog of available intelligence reports that had been given to them by another of their spies in the government, who has never been publicly identified but is generally believed to be a top-level official who served in both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. Pollard’s high-level clearance meant that he could get his Israeli Washington Embassy-based case officer Colonel Avi Sella, who was also running spy Ben-Ami Kadish at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, anything that he wanted.
