House Republicans Hold Press Conference 1/15/19 - Steve King
House Minority Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) denounced Rep. Steve King (R-IA) and his comments on white supremacy. During a news conference on the legislative agenda, they spoke about removing Rep. King from committee assignments. While Minority Leader McCarthy would not say if Rep. King should resign and not run for re-election, Rep. Cheney said she agreed with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) that Rep. King should “find a new line of work.” The two leaders were also joined by Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA). At the top of the news conference, they also spoke about the government shutdown which had extended 25 days
Facing possible censure over comments he made in a recent New York Times interview, Iowa Republican Representative Steve King takes to the House floor to express regret for the remarks. He says he rejects white nationalism and white supremacy, s.and that he is not anti-immigrant. He says he's only opposed to illegal immigration. "I am simply an American nationalist. ... This conviction does not make me a white natalist or white supremacist," he says.
