An 8-year-old Pearl River girl who is undergoing physical therapy after a stroke will participate in a fundraiser to benefit other children like her.
The Nyack community will come together this weekend for the Penguin Plunge fundraiser.
Every step Mae Cunningham takes brings her closer to recovery.
Months ago, Mae Cunningham was a healthy girl. Her mother, Keri Cunningham, says that changed suddenly during a soccer game.
"She was playing great, we were yelling out to her, 'Are you OK? What's wrong?' And she couldn't really communicate," she recalls.
Mae was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a stroke.
"You just don't know, you just go blank. Everything stops. Your whole world just ends," Keri Cunningham says.
Mae was unable to use her right side and left with speech difficulties.
She was brought to Blythedale Children's Hospital for rehabilitation.
The hospital's Dr. Divya Lakhaney says Mae has achieved a great deal in just four months.
"She's made tremendous, tremendous progress already, she's had such a great outcome so far and she continues to make progress," she says.
Doctors still do not know what caused the stroke but say it is not as rare as one would think.
Now, as Mae continues to step toward recovery she will also take another step - a very icy one.
She will participate in the Penguin Plunge. The event will raise funds for her and three other local children.
"We are so fortunate to have people behind us and to be able to apply that to her long-term recovery. Something like this is going to take a long time," says Mae's father, Brendan Cunningham.
The Penguin Plunge will take place this Sunday in Nyack's Memorial Park from noon to 2 p.m.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Four Tennessee police officers are being investigated for their treatment of a woman whose pleas for help they repeatedly ignored as they accused her of faking illness after she was discharged from a hospital. The woman was pronounced dead a day later.
The Knox County District Attorney’s office announced on Monday that it would not press criminal charges after an autopsy determined that 60-year-old Lisa Edwards died of a stroke and that “at no time did law enforcement interaction cause or contribute to Ms. Edwards’ death.”
That has not stopped public outrage after the Knoxville Police Department released video showing officers accusing Edwards of faking mobility and breathing problems and ignoring her repeated pleas for help.
In the video released last week, officers struggle for about 25 minutes to move Edwards into a police van and finally a cruiser after being called by Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center on Feb. 5.
Edwards repeatedly asks for help but is rebuffed by officers and hospital security guards who become frustrated with her inability to step up into the van and tell her she is faking her incapacity.
Edwards tells them she can’t breathe, she needs help sitting up, and that she’s going to have a stroke. At one point, she tells them, “I’m gonna die.”

Irene Cara, the singer behind huge '80s hits from "Flashdance" and "Fame" has died.
Cara passed away in her Florida home Friday, according to her rep. Details surrounding her death were not disclosed.
Irene won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "What a Feeling" -- the iconic song from "Flashdance" which made her a household name.
Irene also scored big with her monster hit, "Fame" from the movie of the same name. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for "Best Actress" for her work in the movie.
Cara went on to appear in other movies, including "City Heat," co-starring Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. She also played opposite Tatum O'Neal in "Certain Fury."
In 2004, Irene was honored with a Prestige Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Her rep said, "It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara. Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief. She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films."

The mortal remains of the Sporting Club de Huelva player Estrella Martín Rasco, 14 years old, are in one of the funeral homes in the capital where an autopsy was performed this Thursday to find out the causes of her sudden death .
Estrella was a regular for the Andalusian U15 team . The teenager had trained on Tuesday afternoon with her team, in the cadet category, with complete normality.
The next morning, when her parents went to wake her up, they realized that she was lifeless. A tragic news that has taken everyone by surprise. Numerous people , including Estrella's teammates , have come to the funeral home to express their sorrow.
The club has suspended all training and has asked the Football Federation to postpone the league match scheduled for this Thursday against Sevilla.

PHOENIX — A Valley spiritual leader with ties to the Phoenix Suns is reflecting on a frightening medical emergency he recently experienced, his recovery and ultimately his return to preaching. Pastor Travis Hearn is the senior pastor at Impact Church in Scottsdale and also the team chaplain for the Phoenix Suns. Moments after praying with Suns starting forward Cam Johnson, one of the thousands of people who attended regular services at the church Sunday morning, Hearn opened up to 12News about a personal life-changing experience.
“2022 was the hardest year of my life,” said Hearn. “I suffered the greatest losses of my life, but I also think it was one of the best years of my life.” In November 2022, Hearn suffered a brain aneurysm that led to a stroke. It happened just days after his church released its very first music single, “He is the Miracle.” The song quickly climbed the iTunes charts to number one. “The stroke, brain aneurysm that led to a hemorrhagic stroke," said Hearn. "They say it’s the worst possible stroke that you can have,” he said. Hearn was rushed to the hospital where he was unable to tell the doctor his kids' names, or even his own name.
“I don’t recall any of this, but my wife was sitting next to me, and I said the words, "count it all joy," and count it all joy is a scripture in the bible that talks about counting it all joy when you fall into various trials,” said Hearn. “It’s almost like subconsciously, deep down inside, I knew this was not good, that here I am fighting for my life, but I need to figure out how to count it joy, that was a very crazy moment.” Doctors said it’s a miracle Hearn survived and for someone in their mid-forties, the medical issue was rare. “The cardiologist told me you should be dead or a vegetable and count your blessings that you’re alive,” Hearn said. It has been several weeks now and Hearn is doing just that.
“I can count it all joy knowing that God is working on me, I can count it joy knowing that pain has a purpose," said Hearn. "I can count it joy, knowing that problems have a purpose.” Support from the Suns has helped him through. “Coach Monty called me a few days after the stroke and he was in the locker room and I have this great picture, we were on Facetime,” Hearn said. “Coach Monty like this and all the players surrounded by him and he’s just like PT, we want you to know we’re praying for you man, we love you, you got this.” Looking ahead, Hearn is humbled, with a new perspective. “That sometimes God’s got to knock you flat on your back in order to get you to look up at him and that was one of these situations for me,” he said.

She filled a void in my life that I never imagined could be filled. We instantly became best friends and had the same crack head energy. Every time I would visit her in Seattle she would not only fly me out but do little things like have flowers waiting next to my bedside or my favorite snacks stocked in the kitchen and never failed to tell me how much she loved me even if it was 1,000 times in just one conversation.
She made you feel like the most important person in the world. She knew pain and she never wanted anyone else to feel it. Unless they hurt me hahaha. She didn’t like any photos of herself even though she was flawless !! and this is my favorite one. I wish she could have seen herself through my eyes. She was magic. No words could ever accurately describe the person she was and what she means to me.

Keyonna Garrison (16) suffered a stroke on January 5th, 2023. According to a fundraising campaign created to help the family with medical expenses, the stroke was caused by a blocked vertebral artery.
Keyonna was initially treated at Guthrie Corning Hospital and then was transferred to the ICU at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
She will undergo physical therapy to improve her motor skills. There was no impact to her cognitive skills. She is on the road to recovery, but it will be a long and emotional journey.

Brianna Aileen Barry passed away peacefully on June 22, 2021, following a major medical event on Saturday, June 19. She was surrounded by family and friends in her last days.
She was born in Deland, Fla. in January 1988. Her love for volleyball started at a young age. She played at Cobb Middle School in Tallahassee and was a ball girl at Florida State matches. It was almost inevitable that she would be a Seminole.
Her career at FSU culminated in her senior season where she earned Second Team All-American and ACC Player of the Year honors. She graduated early in 2009 and then played professionally in Switzerland for three years. Brianna then made the transition from playing to coaching, beginning as the Graduate Assistant Coach at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She was promoted to Head Coach and served in that role until 2019. She them moved from rural Oklahoma to our nation’s capital to be the Assistant Coach at George Washington University, serving in that role until her passing.
While volleyball may have been Brianna’s first love, it wasn’t her only one. Family and friends, Disney, and New York trips to see Broadway shows were just a few of her passions. She loved making friends while working at volleyball camps, and of course Donuts!
Brianna is survived by her parents, Tom and Betty Ann, and her older sister Caitlin. She will be greatly missed by so many. A life too short, but a life joyfully lived. And memories that will last forever.

Reporter Jessica Robb was doing a live remote on Edmonton's CTV during the six o’clock news when she began jumbling her words as she spoke to anchor Nahreman Issa.“Sorry, Nahreman, I’m not feeling very well right now, and I’m about to..” Robb said as her eyes glazed over and she appeared to have speaking, keeping her eyes open, standing I was clearly about to pass out as she started to suffer from a sudden stroke like episode. Quickly the cameras cut back to the in studio anchor who attempted to pacify the situation informing the viewing audience “We will come back to you. Right now, we will make sure that Jessica is doing okay and we will give you guys an update a little bit later,” Issa said as the feed ended. She added for those at home concerned about Robb that she was not alone on site.
The station later tweeted a thanks to everyone who inquired about the Robb and added, “Jessica Robb is feeling better and is now resting.” Robb's public Twitter account was locked down almost immediately but luckily not before screenshots of her past tweets had already been taken where Robb herself admits to not only being Covid-19 vaccinated but also being triple boosted!
Robb's then proceeded to do damage control putting out a public statement "‘While I will not share private medical information publicly, I can say that there is no cause for concern, and that my understanding of my own medical background provides a reasonable explanation for what happened." Also adding “I can, however, confirm that the situation was in no way related to the Covid vaccine." Sure, just must be another coincidence...;)

Jessica Robb, a young reporter, fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, appeared to faint during a Jan. 8 live news broadcast after suffering from obvious cognitive impairment and stuttering.
The clip of CTV Edmonton’s Jessica Robb conducting a live segment from the field began making the rounds on Twitter where the personality, while discussing an update on a local court case, began to suffer from obvious speech impairment.
Approximately 30 seconds into the 67 second clip, Robb’s vocal cadence noticeably begins to slow as she struggles to maintain her professional composure while on camera.
By 35 seconds, Robb begins stuttering. By 38 seconds, she begins repeating herself.
Robb then attempts to laugh before saying, “Sorry Erin, I’m… (nervous laughter) I’m not feeling very well right now. I’m about to fa…”
Erin Isfeld, the studio host then cuts Robb off saying, “Okay. We’ll come back to you. We’ll make sure that you, Jessica, are doing okay.”
As Isfeld says this, Robb, no longer smiling for the camera, begins staggering back and forth as her eyes bulge.
The feed is then cut before any further incident could be broadcast.

(AP) — Carolina Panthers defensive end Henry Anderson said he's hopeful he can return to action on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks after suffering what he called “a minor stroke” in October because of a blood clot in his brain. The 31-year-old Anderson said he felt numbness in his legs and his speech became slurred on Oct. 22, the day before the Panthers were to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His wife took him to a hospital, where he remained for several days receiving treatment. The Panthers placed Anderson on the non-football illness list the following week, but the team never provided an explanation. “It was a blood clot in the brain, that's what the issue was," Anderson told reporters on Wednesday. “We got it resolved pretty quickly.” Anderson said he now realizes he's fortunate it wasn't any worse. “I didn’t know much about strokes but I found out more about them and realized I got pretty lucky avoiding anything serious and long term,” Anderson said. “I am glad that I was kind of oblivious when it happened because I would have been a little more panicked had I realized what was going on. But like I said, I got pretty lucky.” Anderson has since met with specialists and had numerous blood tests to make sure he doesn't have any lingering issues. He has been cleared to resume playing football. Anderson said doctors never determined what caused the blood clot. “Every test we looked at came negative," Anderson said. “I think it was something that I got unlucky because they ran a ton of tests and everything was good. There wasn't anything that showed up or they could point to that they said could have caused it.” Carolina designated Anderson to return from the non-football injury list on Wednesday and interim coach Steve Wilks said he hopes Anderson will get back on the field Sunday. Teammate Brian Burns said he was shocked when he heard the news. “It was scary to me when we found out he had a stroke because he was so young and he's an athlete,” Burns said. “He is like in top-tier shape. I feel like most of the times when I hear about strokes it is older people or obese people or maybe because of a heat stroke, or something like that.” Anderson is in his eighth season. He was a third-round draft pick in 2015 by the Indianapolis Colts. He also spent time with the New England Patriots and New York Jets before signing with the Panthers this offseason. NOTES: Running back D'Onta Foreman missed practice Wednesday with a foot injury but said he expects to play Sunday. Foreman has run for 100 yards in four of his last six games.
