Nebari is a broad term referring to the tree trunk base, root flare and surface roots collectively. It is an important part of bonsai design. The problem is many trees either lack this element or have it as a weak quality.
To achieve both greater surface roots and trunk size better nebari is a requirement. These features are complimentary. With good nebari the trunk tapers correctly and balances the over all tree appearance.
How than can you improve your tree?
Select specific stock
Wait and re pot
Physical barriers to train you r tree
Use of species with naturally wide nebari
Graft new roots
Sub notes to the video.
1. If your tree does not lose the the tap root over time it can be cut off later or immediately. This will slightly speed up the process but will not sit as solid on the flat surface. If you use sub note 3 . this will be important
2. The wider the flat object you use the wider the nebari will be but the longer the tree will take to start growing again.
3. If you plant your tree in the ground and not a pot the plant can grow a wider root base and quicker because as it has more room to work from. The counter to this is the space needed, ease of use and later collection of your tree. The choice is a matter of balancing your resources and time.
This is a wonderful interview/portrait of French philosopher and visionary Jacques Ellul, who considered 'la technique' to be all-encompassing. In 1990, the team of ReRun Productions visited Ellul and in five subsequent days, exhaustive interview sessions were held in his old mansion in Pessac, France. 'The Betrayal by Technology' is one of the very few existing filmed recordings of Jacques Ellul speaking. What price do we pay for efficiency and 'progress' in a technological society? Does technological progress make mankind freer or does it further enslave? What human values that allowed people to make sense of their existence have vanished and been replaced with efficiency?
