This remarkable Santa looks rather familiar ;)? Well he is delivering all the traditional goodies to a little boy who set his wishes to grow up as a boy despite being stuck in a Western European home raised as another undefineable gender.
The Mari Lwyd (Y Fari Lwyd) is a Welsh wassailing tradition that appears around late December to mid January (Hen Galan, or Old New Year) in which a mysterious horse skull draped in bells, runes, and colored ribbons travels to local homes, accompanied by a group of merrymen, who request to be let in through song. The occupants are then expected to respond by denying them entry for various reasons, also through song. This musical exchange, known as the "pwnco", continues until the home's inhabitants run out of excuses and are required to finally allow the party entry -- providing them all with food, drink, and merriment.
To be visited by the Mari Lwyd, or even see it traveling from home to home, is considered to be good luck and blessings for a positive and fortuitous new year. The name "Mari Lwyd" translates to Grey Mare, Grey Mane, or Grey Mary and, though the tradition is commonly thought to originate from the ancient Celtic myth of a pale horse who is able to pass to the underworld, some historians believe the name to be a reference to the Blessed Mary and the tradition related to Mary and Joseph trying to find somewhere safe to give birth.

While the Catholic Church has taken great care over the course of history to preserve spiritual music, very little is known of early Western music that is more secular in nature. The first secular music to receive substantial preservation was that of the troubadours, a group of lyrical poets who gained prominence in the region of Aquitaine during the early 12th century. The latter half of this century saw a rapid expansion of the troubadour tradition, from Aquitaine eastward into parts of Italy and southward into parts of Spain. This expansion is considered indicative of the “classical period” of troubadour performance, and from this time comes arguably the most important and well-known troubadour, Bernart de Ventadorn (c. 1130 - c. 1200).
A peasant’s son born in what is now Corrèze, Bernart learned the art of performance at an early age and, as so many of his contemporaries did, marketed his skills to wealthy patrons. He most likely learned the art of singing and writing from his protector, the viscount Eble III of Ventadorn, and it is long-rumored that Bernart composed his first poems to his patron's wife, Marguerite de Turenne. He is remembered for his mastery and popularization of the "trobar leu" style, as well as for his prolific cançons (45 known lyrics survive, 18 of them with accompanying music), which helped define the genre and establish the "classical" form of courtly love poetry.
Of these cançons, "Can vei la lauzeta mover", written in the Occitan language, is considered to be Bernart's oldest and best known. It is also one the oldest known examples of poetry to employ a first-person narrative style. The subject of the cançon begins with a lark flying and falling in joyful bliss and the narrator lamenting that he could never feel this same joy due to his fervent, unrequited love for a woman. After pining upon the disgrace and vanity of his futile devotion, and loss of all dignity, he vows to never again trust or defend women but to instead enter into a loveless life of solemn exile.

"She Moved Through the Fair" (also known as "She Moves Through the Fair", "Our Wedding Day", "Out of the Window", and "Keayrt Dooyrt My Ghraih Veen Rhym") is a traditional Irish folk song. Its lyrics were first published in Herbert Hughes' songbook "Irish Country Songs" in 1909, though its mysterious origins are believed to be much older than that.
The subject of the song begins with a young man watching his lover move away from him while at a fair, after telling him that since her family will approve, "it will not be long, love, till our wedding day". In the final verse, she returns to him nightly as a ghost, echoing the words "it will not be long, love, till our wedding day", suggesting her untimely end and a potential reunion in an afterlife.
In a letter published in The Irish Times in 1970, Longford poet, Padraic Colum, stated that he, along with Irish composer, Herbert Hughes, had first heard the tune in County Donegal, and that he'd later authored all but the final verse of the lyrics which were published in Hughes' songbook in 1909. However, another music composer, Proinsias Ó Conluain, then contacted the The Irish Times and stated that he'd recorded an identical song called "She Went Through the Fair" that was taught to him by an old man who had said "the song was a very old one" and that he'd "learned it as a young man from a basket-weaver in Glenavy".
The traditional singer, Paddy Tunney, later clarified that Padraic Colum had documented the song for publication after returning from a gathering in Donegal with Herbert Hughes and others. However, it would be more accurate to say that Colum simply added some additional lyrics to what was already a traditional song which by then had "already generated many variations throughout Ireland". Since then, several variations of the song have been discovered throughout Ireland and Scotland.
The song's melody is in Mixolydian mode, leading musicologist John Loesberg to speculate in Ossian’s "Folksongs and Ballads Popular in Ireland - Volume I" (2005) that "from its strange, almost Eastern sounding melody, it appears to be an air of some antiquity". He doesn't define its age with any further precision, though suggests that the tune's true origins likely date as far back as Medieval times. "Pretty Saro" is a traditional English ballad with roots tracing back to the early 1700s. It had become all but forgotten in England by the mid-eighteenth century, but an alternate version of the song was rediscovered in the early twentieth century in the Appalachian Mountains region of the United States, where it had been preserved through oral traditions. The song is another selection from the enormous collection of 1,700 tunes that Sharp compiled with Maud Karpeles while visiting North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, in 1916-1918. "Dear Companion" is a traditional English lament whose original date of composition and author remain unknown, though it was likely penned sometime in the mid- to late 19th century. Its earliest documented performance was on August 8, 1916, when Rosie Hensley of Carmen, North Carolina, sang the song for Cecil Sharp. The song is a selection from the enormous collection of 1,700 tunes that Sharp compiled while visiting North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, with Maud Karpeles in 1916-1918 and was first published in Volume 2 of "English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians". Irish traditional music includes many kinds of songs, including drinking songs, ballads and laments, sung unaccompanied or with accompaniment by a variety of instruments. Traditional dance music includes reels (4/4), hornpipes and jigs (the common double jig is in 6/8 time). The polka arrived at the start of the nineteenth century, spread by itinerant dancing masters and mercenary soldiers, returning from Europe. Set dancing may have arrived in the eighteenth century. Later imported dance-signatures include the mazurka and the highlands (a sort of Irished version of the Scottish strathspey).
The Irish fiddle has been played in Ireland since the 8th century. The bagpipes have a long history of being associated with Ireland Great Irish warpipes were once commonly used in Ireland especially in battle as far back as the 15th century.
A revival of Irish traditional music took place around the turn of the 20th century. The button accordion and the concertina were becoming common. Irish stepdance was performed at céilís, organised competitions and at some country houses where local and itinerant musicians were welcome. Irish dancing was supported by the educational system and patriotic organisations. An older style of singing called sean-nós ("in the old style"), which is a form of traditional Irish singing was still found, mainly for very poetic songs in the Irish language.
From 1820 to 1920 over 4,400,000 Irish emigrated to the US, creating an Irish diaspora in Philadelphia, Chicago (see Francis O'Neill), Boston, New York and other cities. O'Neill made the first recordings of Irish music on Edison wax cylinders. Later, Irish musicians who were successful in the USA made commercial recordings which found their way around the world and re-invigorated musical styles back in the homeland. For example, American-based fiddlers like Michael Coleman, James Morrison and Paddy Killoran did much to popularise Irish music in the 1920s and 1930s, while Ed Reavy composed over a hundred tunes that have since entered the tradition in both Ireland and the diaspora.

Legend of Úna Bhán
MacDermott was the Chieftain of Moylurg, a Celtic Kingdom in North Roscommon. He had a beautiful daughter, Úna Bhán, - so named because of her long blonde hair. His neighbour was Tomás Láidir Costello, a good and sincere man, handsome and strong.
Úna Bhán and Tomás Láidir fell in love and wished to marry but MacDermot would not allow the marriage because he believed Tomás Láidir was not good enough for his daughter. Tomás Láidir was banished from the area and MacDermot had Úna Bhán confined on Castle Island, Lough Key, then called "The Rock", which was located in the centre of MacDermot territory.
Úna Bhán went into a deep melancholy and was dying of grief. Tomás Láidir, hearing of the situation went to see her and when he left, vowed that if MacDermot did not send a message for him to return before he reached the river, he would never go back. The messenger was sent, but did not reach Tomás Láidir until after he had crossed the river. Being a man of honour Tomás Láidir was unable to break his vow and did not return.
Úna Bhán died of a broken heart and was buried on Trinity Island, an island on Lough key. In his grief Tomás Láidir used to swim to the island every night to keep vigil at her grave. Eventually he got pneumonia and realising that he was dying requested that MacDermot allow him to be buried beside Úna Bhán. His request was granted and thus the two lovers were belatedly united.
Two trees grew up over their graves, entwining together to form a Lovers Knot, standing guard over the site.

"Willie O' Winsbury" (c. 1775) is a traditional Scottish ballad, known by several variations including "Johnie Scot", "Johnnie Barbour", "Tom the Barber", and "Lord Thomas of Winesberry". Its subject is a king who returns from Spain to find his daughter pregnant by the ballad's hero. The king orders the hero be hanged but, upon viewing the beauty of his fair complexion and blond hair, decides instead to offer the hero his daughter's hand and a lordship in his kingdom. The hero accepts the marriage proposal but refuses the land and title, suggesting they instead be bestowed upon his betrothed.
