The Train of Tomorrow was an American demonstrator train built as a collaboration between General Motors (GM) and Pullman-Standard between 1945 and 1947. It was the first new train to consist entirely of dome cars, which were the brainchild of GM vice president and Electro-Motive Division (EMD) general manager Cyrus Osborn, who conceived the idea while riding in either an F-unit or a caboose in the Rocky Mountains in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. After GM built a 45-foot (14 m) scale model of the train for $101,772 and displayed it to 350 officials from 55 different Class I railroads in 1945, the Train of Tomorrow was built by Pullman-Standard between October 1946 and May 1947.
The train consisted of four cars: a chair car (Star Dust), a dining car (Sky View), a sleeping car (Dream Cloud), and a lounge-observation car (Moon Glow), all featuring "Astra-Domes". It was pulled by a largely stock EMD E7A. Its dining car, Sky View, was the first dome diner to be built and the first diner of any kind with an all-electric kitchen. The train was constructed with low-alloy, high-tensile steel and Thermopane glass for its domes and windows. Although GM never publicly stated the total price of the Train of Tomorrow, contemporary sources estimated it at between $1 million and $1.5 million.
After being christened at a dedication ceremony in Chicago on May 28, 1947, the Train of Tomorrow embarked on a barnstorming tour of the United States and Canada that lasted for 28 months, covered 65,000 miles (105,000 km), and visited 181 cities and towns. During its tour, the train was ridden or toured by over 5.7 million people, and was seen by an estimated 20 million people. After its tour was completed on October 30, 1949, the train was sold to the Union Pacific for $500,000, and its four cars were put into service between Portland and Seattle on June 18, 1950. The cars were retired from service between 1961 and 1965, and all but one were eventually scrapped. Moon Glow sat in a scrap yard for almost two decades before being discovered by the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS), who purchased and transported it to the Ogden Union Station Museum, where it is undergoing restoration.
The Meldrim trestle disaster occurred at Meldrim, Georgia, on June 28, 1959. Involved was a Seaboard Air Line mixed freight train that derailed over the Ogeechee River. Loaded LPG tank cars from the train plunged into the river below and ruptured. The resulting explosion and fire killed 23 people.
The derailment was caused by the movement of rails on the trestle, as they were compressed by the moving train.
An ICC investigation faulted the railroad for not installing guard rails along the trestle, which might have helped to keep the derailed equipment on the trestle deck, minimizing the risk of a hazardous materials release.

Two men driving a commercial truck hauling radioactive materials died Saturday night after colliding with a train near Culbertson. A Louisiana trucking company believed to have illegally dumped radioactive waste in an Eastern Montana landfill for nearly two years has been ordered to stop by state officials. Dual Trucking and Transport, of Houma, La., has been ordered by the Department of Environmental Quality to cease all operations near the Bakken community of Bainville.
DEQ officials, who began inspecting more than a year ago, say that as early as July 2012, and without a permit, Dual Trucking and Transport began accumulating mildly radioactive soil and oil filter socks, as well as other Bakken waste at the site. The waste site is a couple hundred yards upwind from a housing development in a sandy-soiled region where the water the table is high enough to produce wetlands.
Dual was warned in Sept. 2012 to stop operations until it was licensed by DEQ’s Solid Waste Program. At that time, it also ordered to hire a qualified consultant to develop a cleanup plan and begin removing waste. Dual eventually started the permit process, but then declined state requests for further information, later informing DEQ the company was no longer processing oilfield waste and didn’t need a permit.
However, earlier this month, DEQ inspected the site again and found Dual still managing solid waste without a permit. The DEQ action comes amid rising reports of illegally disposed Bakken oilfield waste, namely filter socks, used to trap naturally occurring radioactive silt driven above ground during hydraulic fracturing. Garbage bags full of the filters have been discovered abandoned in a shuttered North Dakota gas station and on a flatbed trailer near a landfill in that state.
North Dakota doesn’t have a facility that handles radioactive waste. In Montana, where the tolerance for radioactive waste is higher, four waste handlers have applied for permits, including one landfill near Glendive that’s already operational. In Culbertson, a few miles west of Bainville, Mayor Gordon Oelkers is concerned about a private permit application to accept radioactive material on 160 acres seven miles north of town.

One of the most viewed Port Of Tillamook Bay videos on youtube! For several days I searched the old POTB line between Banks and Buxton, OR for this vintage EMD SD9. I finally got a tip that it was in Timber. I drove down the windy forest roads to the tiny community, and sure enough it was there, and had been sitting for many years unused. Since July 2012, this locomotive has long since been scrapped.
If anyone's wondering the location this engine was once at, the town is called Timber, OR. It's a tiny community out in the coast range and can be found on google or yahoo maps.
The smoke in the beginning was only someone using the fireplace in a nearby house, not the engine being started.

I made this video way back when there was serious concern that Bombardier was going to shutter the Derby Carriage Works. People were saying that it was the end of Britain's train manufacturing industry. This was incredibly annoying to me because trains were literally invented in the British Isles. So, after nearly a week's worth of research, this is what I produced. I still plan on doing an American railroad manufacturing industry video; it's just that these videos are always going out of date too quickly. This one is nearly four years old at the time of this writing!
This is aimed more for children who probably never even heard of a Signal Box or a Switching Tower. This video is an extremely limited view into the incredibly interesting subject of manual railroad signaling (which happens to be my favorite interest).
This is a detailed drawing that I made based upon a photograph out of the book, "Rise & Fall of British Railways: Goods & Freight." It's not an exact copy...mostly due to a few very minor mistakes that I made when making it (at that time, I was unfamiliar with how copyright laws apply to artwork). Still, it's probably legal, so I'm happy. I highly recommend that viewers check out the book; it's a comprehensive read on a very interesting subject for any transportation enthusiast.

This is what I know about The American Spirit and it's involvement in the past Federation of Canadian Municipalities Conference held this past weekend in Halifax Nova Scotia, according to an eye witness who is also a personal friend : 1. The #American #Spirit ( #CNRailway #luxury #car) was stationned behind #Pier21 on the #Halifax #Waterfront for several days under tight #security ( #commissionaires & private #security companies) (Pictures attached) 2. A #RedCarpet was set up outside the train and windows were either #tinted or #blinds were closed (Pictures attached) 3. Public and Media #NOTALLOWED 4. 15 or so men and women got on the train between lunch time and 2pm or so on Saturday and each stayed anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Most had ''badges'' that said ''Voting Delegate'' 5. 25 MEN ONLY got on that train early Saturday evening for 2-3 hours 6. EVERYONE arrived in limousines or similar vehicles 7. EVERYONE was greeted by a man on the train who would come to the door of the train 2-3 minutes before the Limo would arrive with the next guess (there were communications in place) 8. On Sunday, between 1:30pm and 5:30 pm or so, a group of 40 people (all seemingly part of the FCM Conference) got on the train and took a trip to Truro,NS ...Mostly men, with a few women, and ONE LITTLE GIRL !!! 9. Another friend of mine #photographed the train leaving Truro, heading back to Halifax. 10. My initial informant claims that the train arrived back in Halifax ''backwards'' and that the passengers debarked on the opposite side of the train so he could not see everyone get off. My informant says he witnessed a few of the passengers ''jump into'' their limousines, each carrying a box. Informant admits they couldn't see everyone who got off, but cannot confirm seeing the little girl get off the train. 11. The people on the train told some of the security agents that they were attending a GALA at Cunard Center Sunday evening that included a Lobster Supper (exactly what was on the FCM Conference agenda) ... I DO NOT BELIEVE IN #COINCIDENCES
