A 1997 Allegro Film written and directed by Christopher Nupen.

A film about the most charismatic performer in the entire history of Western classical music – also the most talked about, the most controversial, the most famous and the most successful classical soloist that the world of music has ever known.

"Sell all you possess, pawn everything, but go to hear him. This is the most astounding, the most surprising, the most wonderful, the most miraculous, the most triumphant, the most bewildering, the most incredible, the most extraordinary and the most unexpected thing that ever happened.
In a dream Tartini saw a devil playing a diabolic sonata – that devil was surely Paganini."
(François Castil-Blaze, Paris, 1831)

"Oh foolish world. O wondrous taste. I have never been so let down as by this so-called virtuoso. I cannot understand how, after hearing Romberg, Rode, Spohr, and Lafont, anyone can listen for one moment to such trickery. It was more like a twittering of sparrows than any legitimate musical sound."
(Hamburgisches Handelsblatt)

The story is astonishing, exciting, wildly unusual and, at the end, deeply touching. It is one of the most extraordinary tales in the history of music and it is told with all the Nupen finesse and commitment that have won him DVD of the Year Award four times in the past six years. Paganini made use of his astonishing gifts – and the gullibility of the world, to create the most elaborate and enduring legend of all instrumental soloists in Western classical music but, as so often with legends, the excitement and the chatter obscured the true figure of both the man and the artist.

In this film, Christopher Nupen looks at the legend and the strange man who created it with his dazzling combination of technical brilliance, supreme showmanship, Italian melody and unbridled manipulative skill – a man whose extraordinary personality unsettled even the most sophisticated and educated minds and provoked wildly contradictory opinions. It presents Paganini's music, shot and edited in the style developed by Christopher Nupen and his colleagues for their prize winning DVDs about Sibelius, Schubert and Tchaikovsky and combines it with extracts from Paganini's letters and quotations from both his admirers and his many detractors.

While being hailed as the greatest performing musician of his time, Paganini was denounced again and again by knowledgeable critics as a charlatan, in league with the devil, and an avaricious man with scant respect for those who responded so enthusiastically to his unforgettable gift – and contributed so readily to his vast personal fortune. Paganini used the legends to make himself not only the most famous performer of his time, but also the wealthiest by a long, long way. In time this provoked envy and resentment and, finally, a pitiable isolation.

And yet, through all of it, he served his daemon with commitment and dedication, and despite enduring ill health, drove himself forward with an energy that astonished all who came into contact with him – as only a man with an unshakeable faith in his destiny could possibly do. Along the way, he wrote a great range of original and memorable music, changed violin playing decisively and created the age of the romantic virtuoso. By the end, however, his unbending quest for gold and for glory had robbed him slowly of almost everything else.

Paganini died in Nice on the 27th May 1840 in the company of his only son Achilles, who had become his constant companion, his aide and translator and his greatest solace in his isolation and illness. He was 57 years old.

A 1983 Allegro Film written and directed by Christopher Nupen.

Mr. Nupen combines biography with performance. Using narration, film footage of mostly sylvan scenes in Germany and Switzerland, and archival photographs, he tells the story of how Johannes Brahms, barely 20, first met Clara and Robert Schumann in 1853, a meeting that would be a crucial influence on the rest of his life. The film breaks away from the narration for passionate performances of two related Brahms compositions: the F. A. E. Scherzo and the G-major Violin Sonata Op.78.

It was Joseph Joachim, Germany's leading violinist and Brahms's close companion, who urged the young composer to knock on the Schumann's Dusseldorf door unannounced. The rapport was immediate and intense. Schumann would write in his journal: ''Here is a man of destiny . . . We shall have in store for us wonderful insights into the spiritual world.'' As a surprise for Joachim, Schumann suggested a collaborative effort to compose a sonata. The piece was called the F. A. E. Sonata. Joachim's motto was ''Frei aber einsam'' (free but lonely). Brahms composed the scherzo section.

Tragedy stalked the Schumanns. After a suicide attempt, Robert was institutionalized until his death two years later in 1856. Brahms, still in his 20's, found himself in love with Clara, 14 years his senior. Mr. Nuper delicately speaks of ''a relationship of unfathomable complexity.'' That relationship would evolve into an enduring friendship. More than 20 years later, in 1878, Brahms published his sonata for violin and piano, dedicated to the memory of Felix Schumann, the last of Clara's children and, like his brother and sister before him, victim of an untimely death.

Violinist: Pinchas Zukerman
Pianist: Marc Neikrug.

A string quartet in C Major composed in September 2020 in Bali, Indonesia. Originally I was inspired by the sounds of the Balinese Gamelan, but as I composed the piece, I mtixed this sound with more traditional Western feelings. It is a simple sonata form, with the second section in d minor. Thanks for listening, hope you enjoy it and have fun playing it.

Thank you for listening to my music. I am a classical trained composer from Canada. Generally, I write music in the styles of neoclassicism and minimalism but I also experiment with atonal styles. I do not, however, think of myself as a composer of a style. The goal of my music is to create something enjoyable to play, listen to and look at. My main instrument is classical guitar but I can also play piano and violin.
I am available for collaboration or commission. Please contact me at [email protected]

Lyrics:

Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - 1966 / Cher, Nancy Sinatra, Dalida, Sheila

[Verse 1]
I was five, and he was six
We rode on horses made of sticks
He wore black and I wore white
He would always win the fight

[Hook]
Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down

[Verse 2]
Seasons came and changed the time
When I grew up I called him mine
He would always laugh and say
"Remember when we used to play?"

[Hook]
Bang bang, I shot you down
Bang bang, you hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, I used to shoot you down"

[Verse 3]
Music played, and people sang
Just for me the church bells rang
Now he's gone, I don't know why
And till this day sometimes I cry
He didn't even say "Goodbye"
He didn't take the time to lie

[Hook]
Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down

Wow, this was our first video in two years. It’s so nice to be producing new content again! And it was really fun working with Chloé Trevor on this Rolling in the Deep video.

I traveled down to Texas a few weeks before this video released to film with Chloe in the hot desert sun on the west side of Austin. As you can see in the video, we filmed both during the evening and at night time with a fire tech crew. That was very cool having explosions behind us!

We worked much later into the night than we had anticipated and boy was I dehydrated. Every time they shot off the flames we could feel a wave of massive heat hit us so that made it even more interesting filming each take.

Thank you to Chloé for being willing to work with me on this song and video. Chloe is incredibly busy as a concert violinist, in demand for performances with orchestras worldwide, so it was definitely a pencil in thing to get this video produced!

“Spring of Fire” is filled with energetic and fiery arrangements. This video was the perfect pick to launch the album with, I love how it just starts at max energy with no build up. It’s like bam, hello!

This was such a fun video to film!

I wrote this Violin and Piano Cover a full year before we filmed it. After hearing Benjamin Cooper's Radical Face for the first time and their recording of this song, I immediately fell in love with it. It’s a very folksy and upbeat type of song which is right up my alley. I would actually dare to say this song is the most fun one for me to play at the piano on the “92 Keys” EP.

Now, getting onto the filming. It was no small effort!

About a month and a half before we were scheduled to film I got a hold of the mayor as well as the director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Twin Falls. Didn’t know what their reaction would be to a request of allowing a piano/violin group to film a music video on top of Shoshone Falls. To my surprise they loved the idea! I drove out to Twin Falls and the Parks director was super nice and showed me around the area so we could start to figure out how this would be logistically possible.

It quickly became obvious that the only way we could get the grand piano on top of Shoshone Falls would be by hiring a helicopter to lift it up there. We certainly didn’t have a budget for that! So we went for the next best thing and figured out that we could load the piano up on a pontoon boat and transport it to Pillar Falls which is a few miles downstream from Shoshone Falls. You’ll even see a shot in the video where I’m playing the song while the pontoon boat is driving down the river near Perrine bridge.

That all worked out really nice. And we were still able to get Crista on top of the money shot, carrying a violin is a little easier.

We filmed all six videos on the EP in six consecutive days. This video was the 5th day. So even starting the day we all woke up pretty exhausted. Carrying the piano into Pillar Falls and hiking to the top of Shoshone certainly tested our endurance, but we made it! And for the final product, it was so worth it. Hope you enjoy the scenery!

This video is a mix between two songs (one of them a piece, technically). "Toccata and Fugue in D minor” by Johann Sebastian Bach is what inspired this special arrangement with the song “Uprising” by English rock band Muse.

Before the birth of 92 Keys, I was writing this arrangement for a string quartet, which I still plan to have available one day! But, while working on producing 92 Keys' first EP with Trevor Loucks, I felt strongly this arrangement would add some intense excitement to our track list as a Violin and Piano Cover.

As a classically-trained violinist, practicing the works of Bach is something included in my everyday practice. Thus, I had to include it in this first EP somehow . . . Toccata and Fugue in D minor was originally written for the organ, and many people have arranged it for multiple instruments. It is one of J.S. Bach’s most popular works. One day I had my Spotify songs on shuffle mode, and Uprising by Muse happened to come on right after Bach’s Toccata and Fugue. As I went on about my day, both songs were stuck in my head at the same time because they are both in D minor, and I guess they’re both just really awesome songs that are well worth having stuck in your head all day. As a result, I wrote down what I heard in my head and then Trevor and Stephen Anderson, our producer, continued to develop and polish it.

The video was filmed near Swan Falls Dam. For each video, we– Parker Waldeck, his brother Dakota, Corbin, Trevor, and I– always spent a few hours before “golden hour” scouting the location to find the perfect view. Originally we were going to shoot the video in a desert area just outside of Kuna, Idaho, but there were a lot of litter shells everywhere from people going out there to shoot guns. We drove a few more miles down the road and came across beautiful Swan Valley. We parked our cars and began the next big process: getting the piano off the trailer and onto a flat area near the pretty view.

This was the first video we filmed that week. And, man, was it windy! I was holding on to my bow for dear life save the wind take it away. But, I guess the wind just makes the video even more intense, which is the vibe we’re going for!

Song Background – By Trevor Loucks

https://92keys.com/videos/falling-slowly/

What a great song this is. It has an interesting history starting from when it was first written for the indie film “Once” in 2006. It took several years for Falling Slowly to be noticed but would ultimately win an Academy Award for best original song for a motion picture in 2008. Well deserved! If you’ve never seen the original performance of Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová at Walton’s Music Shop in Dublin, you should. YouTube.

Irglová’s acceptance speech at the Oscars was almost skipped over, she was ushered off stage before she could say anything, but nice guy Jon Stewart brought her back out after the next commercial. Her speech was great:

“Hi, everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we’re standing here tonight, the fact that we’re able to hold this, it’s just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it’s possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don’t give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much, who helped us along the way. Thank you.”

The part about hope is especially true. If you’re a fan of the instrumental music world you’ve probably heard about Annie Schmidt, Jon Schmidt’s daughter. Jon is the pianist for The Piano Guys. Annie went missing over in Oregon about two weeks prior to this Falling Slowly video being uploaded. We have followed closely the very sad turn of events after the intense search in Oregon turned up nothing. And now the Schmidt family is left to deal with very intense grief and sadness.

But there’s also hope.

One of the first songs we did as a group with 92 Keys dealt with the tragedy of losing a child, Jordan’s Song (https://92keys.com/videos/jordans-song/). That song and video was created with the same idea of hope that someday the Zappia and Maxwell family would see Jordan again. I know the Schmidt family has the same faith and hope of seeing Annie again.

We can’t wait.

Song Background – By Crista Guthrie

https://92keys.com/videos/sugar/

This Violin and Piano Cover is a medley of “Sugar” by Maroon 5 and “Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies. Why not mix oldies with something new? Unfortunately while recording we did not get to roll around in actual sugar (the sweet grain), but we did score on a magnificently beautiful location! This video and “Welcome Home” were both filmed in Twin Falls, Idaho. My uncle Kevin had great connections with Blue Lakes Country Club, so we were able to access Signature Hole 6 on the golf course that is right off the Snake River and near the iconic Perrine Bridge.

I fell in love with “Sugar” by Maroon 5 when they first released it, and fell in love even more when I saw their music video where they crashed random weddings and performed. Who DOESN’T want Maroon 5 to crash their wedding?! (Maroon 5 might be tricky, but be sure to let 92 Keys know if you want some fun instrumental music at your wedding!)

I love creating medleys of pop songs and older songs, whether it be from 40 years ago are 240 years ago. When I arranged “Uprising on Bach’s Toccata,” I used a piece from the18th century and one from the 21st, but this time I didn’t go as far back in time and stuck with a late 1960’s song, “Sugar, Sugar,” by fictional band “the Archies.” (Anyone remember the animated TV series The Archie Show?) Also, the title and purpose of the song are pretty similar to Maroon 5’s. Thus, the creation of 92 Keys’ “Sugar."

Song Background – By Trevor Loucks

Probably one of the most distinct memories of my childhood was smashing the keys on the piano out of sheer frustration. I could not play the piano well nor did I want to play. It was a stupid instrument that no one should waste their time learning. I was not born with the natural gift of music like those kids you’ve probably seen on Ellen, or in the past, Oprah.

After quitting the piano several times and coming back to it, there finally came a point when I was about 14, seven years or so years after the first lesson, where it started to make sense. Finally, the notes on the page started translating to my hands in a more natural manner.

Later, sometime in the middle of my sophomore year of High School I sat down at a piano without sheet music in front of me and to my surprise, was actually able to improv a song in Gb. Playing without sheet music is something I never thought would be possible. Coincidentally, the song that managed to get plucked out was “Amazing Grace” which was also the song I first wrote a piano and violin arrangement for. The seeds for 92 Keys were planted early!

So, it’s probably not hard to figure what the point of this arrangement of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star is. With practice, you will inevitably get better at what you’re working to master. For those of you playing bingo at home, that will satisfy the ‘cliche’ box.

But it’s true though, and that can be an extremely difficult concept to grasp when you’re a kid.

I hope with this Violin and Piano Cover we created it will inspire at least one kid out there that it is indeed possible to get better with time and effort, especially for those who like me, don’t have a natural propensity to excel at music. You can and will improve. Keep practicing!

Hope you enjoy our violin and piano cover of Fireflies! And if you're Owl City, then we really hope you like it. :D It was such a beautiful location to film this song at (Camas Prairie, Idaho).

Song Background – By Trevor Loucks

https://92keys.com/videos/fireflies/

If by some chance of success for us, you have enjoyed 92 Keys’ music and have found yourself listening to our songs more than once, well then a big reason for that is because of Stephen Anderson. He produces music at a level higher than most creators and we’re fortunate to have him creating this music with us.

And this Violin and Piano Cover of Fireflies was actually created by Stephen. It’s great to have a variety of arrangers because every person approaches a song so differently. Crista and I create arrangements that are far, far different from each other! The style of the song, the tempo, the mood, the structure of the chords all varies dramatically from person to person.

So here we are shooting this bad boy on the final day of filming for the 92 Keys EP, and everybody is just absolutely and amazingly exhausted. Six videos in six days about killed me. If you look closely (or maybe you don’t even have to look that closely) at our faces you can see the last drops of energy being consumed. After we broke down and traveled back to Boise I collapsed for about 72 hours and barely left my bed. 😮

Absolutely worth it, though.

Out of all the things I’ve done as a musician in the last 22 years, writing music and creating fun videos with 92 Keys is absolutely at the top of the list.
