DavidPFranceTV INTERVIEW #39
ALEXANDRA D'ITALIA
Director of the Writing Center / Co-Director of the Moot Court Honors Program / Associate Professor of Law
Southwestern Law School
Writer, Artist, Podcast Co-Creator and Host: “Women Bridging The Gap”
Los Angeles, California USA

https://www.podchaser.com/creators/alexandra-ditalia-107aIZSp3X

In his 39th interview, David speaks with long-time friend, colleague and high school classmate Alexandra D'Italia.

Alexandra is a writer, intrepid traveler, WWOOFER, volunteer, and lifetime learner. After a brief career as a criminal defense attorney, she earns her living as a law professor in Los Angeles. She spends every summer she can teaching and volunteering at Jacaranda School for Orphans in Limbe, Malawi.

Alexandra is a Law Professor at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles. She is passionate about writing, art and traveling. David and Alexandra have not spoken in approximately 20 years. They cover a lot of topics in a very short period of time: growing up in South Orange/Maplewood, New Jersey; academic life, writing, travel, art and the pursue of non-traditional careers and living.

Alexandra's Biography from Podcast:

Alexandra is a writer, intrepid traveler, WWOOFER, volunteer, and lifetime learner. After a brief career as a criminal defense attorney, she earns her living as a law professor in Los Angeles. She spends every summer she can teaching and volunteering at Jacaranda School for Orphans in Limbe, Malawi.

Alexandra’s Biography on Law School Website:

Since high school, when she published her first short play, Alexandra D'Italia has had a passion for writing and has pursued a varied career path that requires that skill. As a result, she brings a unique perspective to her role as Director of the Writing Center at Southwestern. Early in her career, she was a communications specialist in press and Congressional relations, then earned her law degree so she could have a more hands-on role in advocacy. She went on to serve as a criminal defense appellate attorney representing indigent defendants through the Sixth District Appellate Program. She was also a contributing author to legal treatises, a freelance journalist, and a writer of fiction.

Regardless of its form, Professor D'Italia believes that all good writing has the same basic rule: "Know the audience and engage it." She explains, "You have to trust your reader, but at the same time you need to be generous to the reader. That balance is tough to learn, and so many students just give up." But she doesn't believe there are any "bad" writers out there, just "unpracticed ones."

"Strong writing skills are key to finding a job in this market. And in practice, a well-written brief can make the difference in a close case."

Professor D'Italia began her teaching career in 2002 as a member of the adjunct faculty of her alma mater, Golden Gate University School of Law, where she taught Appellate Advocacy and Legal Methods. She also served as faculty advisor to the Law Review and developed a unique advanced legal writing elective that incorporates creative writing workshop pedagogy to help engage law students in improving their legal writing.

Professor D'Italia joined Southwestern's Legal Analysis, Writing and Skills faculty in 2006, and later became an adjunct faculty member to concentrate on her own writing as well as the advanced legal writing elective. She returned to the full time faculty in Fall 2013 when she was appointed as the Writing Center Director. She also currently serves as Director of Southwestern's Moot Court Honors Program. Professor D'Italia is devoted to ensuring that students get as much writing experience as they can while they are in law school. Her dedication to students was recognized in 2012 and 2013 when she was awarded the Adjunct Excellence in Teaching Award.

She has served as a contributing author and editor of treatises on State Constitutional Law, Criminal Law Advocacy, Texas Torts and Remedies, Texas Litigation Guide, Illinois Tort Law, Illinois Civil Trial Guide, and Business Insurance Law, among other areas. She has also lectured on a variety of topics related to writing, public interest, and other areas of law. While a law student, she was a Public Interest Law Scholar and Managing Editor of the Law Review.

Professor D'Italia's training, experience, and accolades in writing are not limited to the law. She recently earned a Masters in Professional Writing with an emphasis in fiction from the University of Southern California, graduating with honors and winning the Edward W. Moses Award in Fiction. Her stories and plays have been published in national journals, including Gold Man Review, Meat for Tea, Red Rock Review, Arcadia and South Loop Review, and a number of her short plays have been produced, most recently in New York at The Producers' Club Theater.

In a world where hurting hearts would turn to stone
Angry souls would burn with a raging flame
until ashes, they were blown away
and those left stewing in blame
would slowly... disappear alone

... It's these dire moments heroes are formed
when a cure is needed for the infections spreading
it can be found through a search for truth
an eye for beauty is born through pain
they gain gratitude in the afterglow of abuse
...
To those who are seen as 'mice' among giants...
Take heart little ones, there's always a way
when chances are taken!
If life was a furnace, and hardships the pressure
the pain would have to be the heat needed
to harden we the coal into diamonds
Just remember,
In the end, you're meant to be more beautiful
outside and in...

A 2002 PBS Biography Documentary narrated by Keith David and Kevin Conway as the voice of Mark Twain.

Samuel Clemens rose from a hardscrabble boyhood in the backwoods of Missouri to become, as Mark Twain, America’s best-known and best-loved author. Considered in his time the funniest man on earth, Twain was also an unflinching critic of human nature who used his humor to attack hypocrisy, greed and racism. He created some of the world’s most memorable characters as well as its most quoted sayings. And, in his often-misunderstood novel Huckleberry Finn, he gave the world the masterpiece that Ernest Hemingway would call the true beginning of American literature. Mark Twain tells the story of the writer’s extraordinary life—full of rollicking adventure, stupendous success and crushing defeat, hilarious comedy and almost unbearable tragedy.

A 1998 Arts, Biography Documentary with audio in Russian and English subtitles.

In this evocative two-part portrait of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, director Alexander Sokurov interprets the acclaimed writer's life based on two lengthy talks with Solzhenitsyn and his wife.

The documentary shot in Solzhenitsyn's home shows his everyday life and covers his reflections on Russian history and literature. The film, commissioned by a Russian TV channel and shot in 1998 consists of two parts of about 90 minutes each, thus the total comes to slightly over three hours.

The Dialogues with Solzhenitsyn is not a straightforward biography but instead focuses on Solzhenitsyn's monologues and his discussions with Sokurov about Russian literature, folklore, history, and language. Some of the writer's statements, polemic and non–trivial, are themselves documents of Russian culture.
The result is a portrait of a Russian legend through his own words.

A 2012 PBS Biography Documentary narrated by Harry Prichett, as part of PBS American Masters series.

Leading historians, biographers and personal friends reveal the complexities of Margaret Mitchell, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author behind Gone With the Wind. Born in Atlanta in 1900, Margaret Mitchell was a force to be reckoned with-a debutante who challenged society with a brazen dance; a reporter who roamed town when tradition called for women to stay at home; and a philanthropist who risked her life in the name of generosity. She took chances every day of her life; and though she wrote only one book, published in 1936, Gone with the Wind went on to become the most popular novel ever written.

Margaret Mitchell: American Rebel tells the compelling story of the author's life in commemoration of her book's 75th anniversary in 2011. Through dramatic reenactments and interviews with top Mitchell scholars, Margaret Mitchell emerges as a complex and fascinating woman who had much in common with her iconic creation, Scarlett O'Hara.

Previously it was reported that Kelly Sue DeConnick was writer for Captain Marvel 2. Not much was known about Kelly Sue DeConnick and the article on SausageRoll even had Comicsgate incorrect. The latest reports now have Megan McDonnell as the writer. Megan is a writer for the Disney+ show WandaVision and has some familiarity with the MCU and the Marvel characters. How well will she writer for Captain Marvel 2?

Kevin Feige has stated which MCU properties will be a part of phase 4 and phase 5. It has also been released by Marvel which ones will be shows on Disney Plus. Interestingly, where Captain Marvel 2 fits into the plans has not been revealed. The best guess is that it will be in MCU Phase 5.

The Hollywood Reporter is one of several sources for Megan McDonnell being the writer for Captain Marvel 2. Here is the source article from the Hollywood Reporter:

Channel Dad is a long time fan of comic books, though it has been years since he last bought one. He still follows pop culture and reports on the oddest of items in the MCU. Channel Dad does not have a comicbookcast. Channel Dad of the Fandom Menace create videos that are different than anyone else. Channel Dad is not a copy-cat. Channel Dad is his own thing. One might say Channel Dad is a Brainmuffin too.

A 2016 TV5Monde History Documentary hosted by Stephane Bern. Audio in French with English subtitles.

George Sand, one of the most romantic characters of the 19th century, and one of the most scandalous; a woman of letters who wrote under a masculine pseudonym. Aurore Dupin, her real name, had only one aim, to become independent of any man even if it shocked her contemporaries.

Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin (1 July 1804 – 8 June 1876), best known by her pen name George Sand, was a French novelist, memoirist and socialist. One of the most popular writers in Europe in her lifetime, being more popular than both Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac in England in the 1830s and 1840s, Sand is recognised as one of the most notable writers of the European Romantic era.

A 2017 BBC Documentary hosted by Stephen Smith.

Dr Zhivago is one of the best-known love stories of the 20th century, but the setting of the book also made it famous. It is a tale of passion and fear, set against a backdrop of revolution and violence.
The film is what most people remember, but the story of the writing of the book has more twists, intrigue and bravery than many a Hollywood blockbuster.

Stephen Smith traces the revolutionary beginnings of this bestseller, to it becoming a pawn of the CIA at the height of the Cold War. The writer of the novel, Boris Pasternak, in the words of his family, willingly committed acts of literary suicide in being true to the Russia he loved, but being honest about the Soviet regime he hated and despised. Under Stalin, writers and artists just disappeared if they didn't support the party line. Many were murdered. Writing his book for over 20 tumultuous years, Boris Pasternak knew it could result in his death. It did result in his mistress being sent to the Gulag twice, but he had to have his say. This is the story of the writing of perhaps the bravest book ever published. It is the story before the film won Oscars and its author the Nobel Prize, it is the untold story of the real Dr Zhivago - Boris Pasternak.

A 2003 BBC Television docudrama, written by Chris Durlacher and Paul Whittington, directed by Chris Durlacher.

A Life in Pictures is a fascinating film which straddles the boundary between cinema and documentary. Orwell died in 1950 after the completion of his magnum opus 1984. Despite having lived in a time in which motion picture cameras and audio recording equipment were generally available there is no film of him and not one single recording of his voice survives anywhere. The film is an attempt to create a visual record of George Orwell's life. Orwell himself is played by Chris Langham who does a masterful job of bringing the author to life.

The point is made early on that while the pictures are invented the words are not and everything that Langham (as Orwell) says during the film is something that Orwell wrote. What the film does brilliantly is to clearly demonstrate to someone who is not familiar with Orwell's work that he was not a one-hit-wonder who produced one great book and disappeared but rather someone who evolved over a long and distinguished career to the point where the writing of 1984 was not a choice for him but an imperative.

The film follows a roughly chronological order starting with Orwell's schooling and ending with his death shortly after the publication of 1984.
