Now the Dam is falling apart. Wonder how long until it collapses. Take a look at it from before the Bushwar.
Several shots of the huge dam at Kariba; the man-made lake that floods the bushland and forest; people fish from a boat, surrounded by treetops sticking out of the water. Two men look through binoculars on a patrol boat at a game reserve. Buffalo and antelope drink at the lakeside; zebras and monkeys are seen.

At Livingstone near the Victoria Falls we see a specially built 'native village' - a tourist attraction to show visitors what was there before the new dam flooded the tribesmen's land. The 'villagers' are seen carving wooden ornaments, drying clothes, forging buffalo spears, storing grain, making drums. Native dances and rituals are seen, involving strange costumes (one looks like a giant wood louse).

At the Wankie National Park we see various wildlife shots: a herd of bison are herded off into new territory by two wardens in a Land Rover; elephants drink at a man-made water hole; some tourists in an open-top camper van stand to look at some giraffes, a pride of lions eating their kill. Elephants, antelope, zebras and giraffes all gather to drink at a lake. A warden throws a chunk of wood at an elephant that is getting a little too close to the parked camper van.

Sir Oswald Mosley talks about Rhodesia on October the 8th 1965, 33 days before Ian Smith enacts the Rhodesian Unilateral Declaration of Independence. Very interesting to hear his take on the 'Rhodesian Question'

On November 11, 1965, Rhodesia proclaimed its independence from Britain.

November 11th Rhodesia and the Unilateral Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Ian Smith chose 11am on Remembrance Day, the anniversary of the 1918 armistice, for his radio broadcast in which he made the Unilateral Declaration of Independence. Ian Smith's government assumed wide powers, whilst in Britain Harold Wilson announced that all ties with the rebel regime were broken as a result of the declaration. The declaration provoke

Ian Douglas Smith's first Interview for United States radio. The Interviewer is W.J. 'Bill' Simmons editor of the Citizen magazine of the The Citizen's Council Forum. It takes place in Salisbury, Rhodesia. They speak at length about the reasoning behind Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence on the 11th of November 1965. The interview is very clear and the sound quality is excellent, one of the best I have heard from Rhodesia in the mid 60's. He speaks about how the Rhodesian UDI document was based partially on the United States Declaration of Independence amongst many other subjects.

For the past six months African guerrillas, operating
from bases in Zambia and Mozambique have been
carrying out hit and run raids on isolated white farms
in Rhodesia's border area. In January 1973 Rhodesia
closed the border and mounted a trading blockade to
force Zambia'a President Kaunda to deal with the
guerrillas. Kaunda retaliated by closing his side of the
border, stopping copper shipments on Rhodesian
Railways, and accusing Rhodesia of aggression in the
United Nations. This report shows the aftermath of
the guerrilla attacks, talks to the victims and analyses
the political and economic issues.

Film extolling the wonderful life and achievements of Rhodesia. Emphasis is on united Rhodesians, with footage of them in various situations - agricultural shows, city scenes, country scenes and village scenes. It looks at the natural resources of the country and mentions the importance of using them wisely and being conservation-minded. Schools are shown and mention is also made of increased industrial production, few strikes, health services, agriculture and sports. Footage is shown of black and white soldiers in the bush to illustrate the claim that all Rhodesians are cooperating to create an efficient force against terrorism.

On November 11 1975, Rhodesia marks the tenth
anniversary of its unilateral declaration of independence
from Britain. In the past year, pressure for a settlement
between Mr. Smith's Government and the African opposition,
led by the African National Council, has increased as both
South African Premier Mr. Vorster and the Presidents of
Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania commit themselves
to the resolution of the crisis. So far, however, talks have
been unsuccessful and Mr. Smith seems determined to carry on
while his African opponents have once again split into feuding
factions.

We hear from white Rhodesians about their views on their safety, the increasing number of attacks from terrorists and what the future holds for the country if and when their minority rule ends.

In 1976 Ian Smith met with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in Pretoria. As a result of that meeting, the Rhodesian Government accepted a number of proposals by Kissinger in the hope of bringing about a political settlement.
This is a documentary of the Rhodesian public's reaction to the proposals.

After Ian Smith returned to Rhodesia from the 1976 Geneva conference, he rings in the new year.

Rhodesia - The Nyadzonya Raid (Operation Eland) 1976
Operation Eland, also known as the Nyadzonya Raid, was a military operation carried out by operatives of the Rhodesian Selous Scouts at Nyadzonya in Mozambique on 9 August 1976.The Rhodesians claimed 300 ZANLA and 30 FAM (Armed Forces of Mozambique) soldiers were killed; documentation captured after the event suggested that 1,028 were killed.

After surviving more than eleven years of illegal
independence and UN-imposed sanctions, Rhodesia
is now facing what looks like its most serious crisis
yet. Guerrilla activity is increasing, talks between
white and black leaders appear to be at a standstill
and the economy is now being hit by Mozambique
president Samora Machel's decision to close his
borders to Rhodesian exports. This report back
grounds the issues.

A TV News report from Rhodesia in 1976, covering everyday life and where the everyday man thought the future was going. Little did they know that in 3 years their country would turn into majority rule Zimbabwe-Rhodesia (June 79) and that in 4 years (April 1980) the Communists would take every Parliamentary seat and the country would be renamed Zimbabwe, ruled by Robert Mugabe until 2017 (37 years).
The coverage has a very British take on the situation. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Operation Dingo, was a major raid conducted by the Rhodesian Security Forces against the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) headquarters of Robert Mugabe at Chimoio and a smaller camp at Tembue in Mozambique from 23–25 November 1977. Chimoio was a large ZANLA encampment and training facility, and launch pad for insurgents infiltrating into Rhodesia. More than 3,000 ZANLA fighters were reported as killed and 5,000 wounded while only one pilot and one SAS soldier died and six were wounded.

A professionally commissioned documentary about the training of Rhodesian Regular Army Officer Cadets. It follows the fortunes of Inf 25/19 - a group of young men commissioned into the Rhodeisan Army in 1977.

With the Geneva talks to thrash out a settlement for the Rhodesian issue of majority rule adjourned without any sign of progress, Britain's chairman, Lord Ivor Richard, has been shuttling around southern Africa to find common ground among the main participants before re-convening negotiations. Meanwhile, the war continues unabated on four-fifths of Rhodesian soil with innocent blacks suffering in the cross-fire between government soldiers and nationalist guerrillas.
The air of uncertainty is worrying settlers, who are growing less hopeful of a peaceful outcome and
buying guns "just in case".

August 6, 1977. Terrorists supported by communist nations blow up Woolworth's department store in Salisbury Rhodesia. 11 killed and 76 injured. Rhodesians suffered. The world was silent.

The Greys Scouts were a mounted infantry unit. Horses were used to get to the contact area and once there they fought as infantrymen. The major on foot in the video was Major Stevens, who left the unit early.

"In Rhodesia, Army and Police units were out chasing guerrillas after massive incursions from over the border. The incidents were believed by military sources in Rhodesia to be linked to a massive campaign to recruit black Rhodesians for Joshua Nkomo's Zimbabwe African Peoples' Union. Since the beginning of the year, at least 600 black Rhodesians have been led to Botswana and then onto Zambia to the north for guerrilla training. ZAPU appears to be bent on increasing its forces to match those of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU), whose guerrillas operate out of Mozambique. The Rhodesian Army has been successful in capturing the majority of the guerrillas who infiltrate across the border, but they are looking for new methods of catching them. one of these is the use of scouts on horseback who are able to pursue men on foot with greater agility than if they were motorized.

This is how it is described in 1977 by the BBC, Jut how many inconsistencies can one pick out in this video. Thankfully we live in the future. Sadly, Rhodesians did not have our vantage point.

Graham Gillmore's Super 8 cine film taken in Rhodesia 1977 to 1980, showing views of Salisbury with the funeral of President John Wrathall, Kariba and Victoria Falls. Rhodesian Light Infantry, Support Commando at Grand Reef, Fire Force call out. As taken, the cine film was silent so a sound track was added with the music of the times. The quality is not marvellous but reflects the limitations we had with amateur cine film. I have resisted the temptation to tweak it up with modern editing but rather leave it as a document of those times.
