AR-15 5.56 .223 vs .308 7.62 AR-10 ,sound comparison based on 2 sources

7.62x51m NATO is for 7.62 chambered rifles as the brass is a bit thicker,& .308 Winchester is for .308 rifles as commercial ammo sometimes loaded to slightly higher pressure,
but other than that, the cartridges themselves are pretty much the same.

The .223 Remington is a sporting cartridge with the same external dimensions as the 5.56x45mm NATO military cartridge. ... Due to its lower pressure, you can safely fire .223 Rem. ammunition in a 5.56mm chambered gun; however, the same cannot be said in reverse. The 5.56x45mm ammo creates a higher pressure.
