A short history of the Gigas Codex, which is sometimes also referred to as "The Devil's Bible".

With the name literally meaning giant book, the codex is surrounded by mystery and legend. Science has combined with history to offer a number of answers to age old questions regarding this book.

One legend suggests the book was composed by a condemned monk in a single night as he entered into a compact with the Devil himself. In exchange for his freedom, the monk had promised his monastery to create a great work to honor the monastery. However, when he realized he would be unable to complete the task, instead of turning to God in prayer, he is said to have turned to the Prince of Darkness instead. Promising his soul in exchange for his freedom, the massive tome was completed.

The real history actually confirms some aspects of the story. For example, graphalogical hand-writing analysis shows that the text was indeed composed by a single hand but must have taken about 25 to 30 years to complete. The book is typical of works of its kind during the time, but has a few elements which set it apart such as exorcism procedures which name specific demons, the depiction of a very large image of Satan, and spells related to healing and the like.

This will be the first entry in a month-long October or Halloween series of videos concentrating on the history and science of a number of occult topics.
