The two work together to shut off the facility's power and the door to freedom opens. Suddenly, the door halts halfway and then closes back up. The building has become sentient and realizes it too cannot live without the Bucket's euphoria of warmth and calmness so it refuses to let Stanley leave until he lets his Bucket go, but Stanley refuses. In the end, Stanley realizes that as long as he has his Bucket, there's no reason to be afraid while trapped in a cold and pitch black building forever.
