JAPANESE MOVIES YOU'VE NEVER SEEN
"Village of Eight Gravestones" (Yatsu Haka Mura) was made during the "Kindaichi Murder Mystery Boom" that began in the late 70's and continues in differing forms to today (with his grandson being featured in a comic book series). This movie, contemporaneous with another series of Kindaichi mysteries directed by Ichikawa Kon AND a television series that serialized the novels, takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on the Columbo-like detective, it focuses on the "fish out of water" character, an airport ground crew member who finds he just may be the long lost heir to a tremendous fortune. Sounds good, right? Not when murders start happening. Even worse, the murders appear to be tied in to an age-old curse.
A high budget film, it contemporizes the story; enhances the production values; and unabashedly accepts a ghostly revenge story. In short, it has it ALL.
So why hasn't it had a proper US release?
JAPANESE MOVIES YOU’VE NEVER SEEN
This series brings to your attention those movies attempts to explain Japanese cinema, not through the bona-fide classics, but via the vernacular films that may or may not have had a US release, but are well worth seeking out. Here we see combination dramas, teen musicals, multiple remakes of the same story, exotic combinations of genres, and more!
