Christian groups are concerned that if the Coalition’s religious discrimination bill isn’t passed, schools will no longer be able to hire staff that “align to their values," according to the Australian Association of Christian Schools.
The Coalition’s religious discrimination bill is currently being debated in Senate legal and constitutional affairs committee.
Dylan Turner from the Australian Association of Christian Schools told Sky News host Chris Smith the current religious school model could be under threat if the bill does not pass.
“Our Christian school model relies on every single member of staff being a Christian and adhering to the beliefs of the school,” he said.
“Those discrimination laws are being reviewed, we currently rely on exceptions in those discrimination laws to hire staff according to our beliefs.
“Our fear is if this bill does not pass those exceptions will be removed.”
