Fantasy in G minor for violin and orchestra, Op. 24 by Josef Suk

Suk completed the first version of this fantasy for violin and orchestra in 1902, but would revise the work the following year. Suk was living in Prague at the time, and was happily married to Otilie Dvořák, daughter of Antonin Dvořák. While Suk was a violin virtuoso himself, his catalogue of works for a violin soloist or string quartet is relatively minimal. This work, despite not being listed as a violin concerto on the manuscript, would be considered Suk’s attempt at the format.

The work does not conform to the usual criteria of a violin concerto, with only one movement albeit a movement that is marked by five distinct shifts in tempo. The departure from the conventional standards of the violin concerto format is an indication of Suk attempting to define a musical style separate from that of his tutor Dvořák.
