Сестре Сантрач - Јунаци са Кошара (Милутин Попадић)
Translator note
(*) he asked his mother to light him a candle In church, so he and other heroes have peace. (idk how it is in other religions, but here we light candles both for dead and alive, and both usually have designated areas. And he basically told her not to light candle in section for alive people but for the dead, cuz he is certanly already dead)
(**)Knez Lazar Hrebeljanović (Knyaz Lazar) is very important historic figure, that led Serbian army to great Battle of Kosovo in 1389. It was battle against invading Ottomans and us Serbs (assisted by very few other Balkan nations). We ultimately lost, but that battle is celebrated as our greatest victory. Which may seem odd to foreigners. It is victory in our eyes because our tiny country and tiny population did not bow down to far far superior Islamic invaders but went into certan death defending their honor and faith. And thus it is said that they won that battle In the eyes of God, and altho they lost their earthly lives, they “conquered” Empire of Heaven (Heavenly Empire). Lazar was captured and executed that day.
(***)Miloš Obilić was also important historic figure in the Battle of Kosovo, he is said to be the best warrior of his time (but not for what is about to happen). After the most of Serbian army fell, he seemingly surrendered. But when he came to Ottoman Sultan, he pulled out his knife and butchered Sultan. He was executed shortly after.
(****) as far as I understand this part means like, if you forget about those heroes, you should be cursed to live through all of that suffering again. like you shall catch a curse of death or something, but I am not entirely sure about this verse
