String Quartet No. 2 in G major, Op. 18 ‘Komplimentier Quartett’ by Ludwig van Beethoven

Beethoven completed this quartet in 1800 while under the supervision of Joseph Haydn. The nickname “Komplimentier Quartett (Quartet of bows and curtseys)” is possibly due to the rigid way in which Beethoven observed the tradition of the German string quartet format as it was in the late 1700’s. It is also possibly due to the fact that Haydn had completed a string quartet the year before which also had the nickname “Komplimentier Quartett”.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro
II. Adagio cantabile
III. Scherzo: Allegro
IV. Allegro molto, quasi presto
