O du verratenes Deutschland (Robert Blum Lied) - German Freedom Song + English Translation
Robert Blum (* 10. November 1807 in Köln; † 9.
A political song that deals with the execution of Robert Blum on November 9, 1848 in Vienna. The death of the democratic member of the Frankfurt National Assembly triggered a wave of indignation across the country. It is one of the many songs that was written in Blum's honor at the time (see also: Who moves there to Brigittenau https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2MegxKHUY4&t=6s)=6s). Karl Friedrich Biedermann (1812–1901), who was also a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly, wrote the lyrics in November 1848, presumably shortly after Blum's execution. The verses were written to the melody of the Andreas Hofer song "Zu Mantua in Banden" and published in Leipzig as a handbill with the title "The Song of Faithful Robert".
Robert Blum (born November 10, 1807 in Cologne, † November 9, 1848 in Brigittenau near Vienna) was a German politician, publicist, publisher and poet. He came from a poor background and was a member of the first democratically elected all-German parliament, the Frankfurt National Assembly, that emerged as a result of the revolution. During the second phase of the revolution, Blum took part in the October uprising of 1848 on the side of the revolutionaries in the defense of Vienna against the imperial-Austrian troops. After the uprising was put down he was executed after a court martial.
English Translation:
1. Oh Germany, you were betrayed
where is your sanctuary
Your Robert is shot,
your faithful Robert Blum.
Freedom sent many heroes
to fight and quarrel for the fatherland,
: For the German fatherland:
2. But nobody fought
like him, the strong lion,
And nobody suffered
Like him, so bravely and loyal.
With his speech like a thunder
In the first row for the fight he stood
: For the German fatherland:
3. They captured him
The glory of the German country;
They led him away
The faithful Robert Blum.
Because he fought for law and light,
He always stood and never wavered
: For the German fatherland:
4. They lead him in chains
Away to Brigittenau,
There were commanded
Three riflemen strictly.
He shouted: “I always love freedom!
Shoot, you sinister Windisch-Grätz #!
: Long live the German country!":
5. And so firmly in death
The German man stood there.
The drummer beat the drumroll
The riflemen aimed.
The salvo crashed muffled and heavy,
Your faithful Robert is no longer alive.
: Goodbye, you German country!:
