In 2011 I completed my last will and testament, put my affairs in order and stood a full bottle of Grants whisky plus a bottle of tranquilisers (Mogodon) on my bedside table. This did not represent a moment of despair or depression; on the contrary I welcomed my impending death – aware I represented a complete failure (hardly anybody read my books or listened to my music) I decided I had nothing to contribute to the planet so it was time to remove myself from it.
This is one of 4 numbers I completed in 2011 for the album Per Ardua Ad Astra which I decided would be the final UNIT disc on which I appeared. However, perhaps due to my emotional state, the performance was rough and the tempo too brisk. I have rectified these anomalies and this is how the number should have sounded. I still question the validity of my continued existence on a planet already over-populated but now I have access to free recording studio time, I may as well make take advantage of it.
The friends who I never had become, whatever the cost,
the friends who I never lost but I remember the night you stayed...
I simply hadn’t the heart, I couldn’t tear you apart.
I wouldn’t know where to start but I remember the plans we made...
I slowly crossed off the list the friends who didn’t exist;
at least they’ll never be missed but I remember just empty air...
Another night on my own, recalling people I’ve known,
reminds me I’m still alone but I remember I used to care...
