Sturgeon's Law hits film a lot harder than it does text. To my mind, Firefly & Serenity are the only significant examples of SF done well in film. For reference, I'm a fan of Heinlein, Pournelle, Niven, Dean Ing, Doctorow, & T. J. Martinel, I think James Baen was a demigod - and I'm totally bewildered that anybody likes Frank Herbert or Orson Scott Card. I have deep respect for Orwell & Huxley - everybody should read 1984 & BNW, but only a psychopath would enjoy them. If your tastes are at all similar, you need to check out the Firefly universe.
Whedon reminds me more of Heinlein than any of the other writers I mentioned, with a bit of Spider Robinson's wit. This isn't a plot summary or spoiler - just a sampling to give the flavor. Go to ebay or abe.com to buy the Firefly collection & Serenity on DVDs. If you watch the Firefly episodes, watch them in Whedon's intended order, not the random shuffle that some retarded TV exec had them aired in.
