Ruppert died of "a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head". He once said: "The question I am asked most frequently at my lectures is why I haven't been killed yet. I have two answers. First, it is not cost-effective, and the response would cause more problems than it would solve. I am not important enough to kill." He not only names Dick Cheney as the prime suspect in the mass murders of September 11 and states that not only was he a planner in the attacks, but also that on the day of the attacks he was running a completely separate Command, Control and Communications system which was superseding any orders being issued by the NMCC (the National Military Command Center), or the White House ‘Situation Room’.
