Third book of guitar tablature: Toccata No. 2 by Johannes Hieronymus Kapsberger

The composer Johannes Kapsberger was likely born in Venice circa 1580. Little is known about his life until he resettled in Rome in 1605. The composer would quickly gain a reputation as a virtuoso on the lute and a talented composer, and would organise ‘academies’ which were conducted in his house to tutor others in lute and composition.

Between 1609 and 1619 Kapsberger would publish a number of books of music, particularly for lute. By 1624, Kapsberger was offered a position in service to Cardinal Francesco Barberini (the nephew of the incumbent Pope, Urban VIII) and would remain in the service of Barberini until his death in 1651.

Kapsberger would publish his third book of guitar tablature in 1626.
