Women from 40 different nationalities were trafficked into Ireland for the sex trade in 2018
Morning Ireland talked to Sarah Benson, the CEO of Ruhama which deals with women affected by the sex-trade. She says prostitution is in every town in Ireland. Ruhama's annual report says they assisted over 300 women for 40 different nationalities, 122 of whom were victims of trafficking. Benson says the industry is worth many millions and operated by organised crime gangs.
Benson claims a Red C poll claims that 8% of Irish men pay for sex but it is unclear whether this figure included people with a migrant background living in Ireland.
In 2015, the Immigrant Council of Ireland claimed organised crime gangs are running an international sex trafficking network stretching from Nigeria and Cameroon to Ireland — making them an estimated €600,000 per day.
In 2013, the Irish Independent reported that Nigerian migrants in Ireland were sending nearly half-a-billion euro back home each year. World Bank figures reveal that €468m in 'remittances' was sent from Ireland to Nigeria in 2011.
That was an average of more than €26,000 for each of the 17,642 Nigerian nationals in Ireland, including children.
Benson said prostitution was incompatible with gender equality but the phenomenon of underage boys being abused at gay chem-sex brothels were not mentioned in the report.
