BATTLE FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN: EUROPE MUST DEFEND ITS MOST IMPORTANT SEA

The Mediterranean Sea has become a battleground in the war for the future of the European people. Illegal #migration continues to increase and threaten the security of #Europe. In this video we examine some recent developments and general trends in this struggle.

First, last week Morocco allowed large numbers of illegal migrants to cross over into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. We discussed the details in a previous video. Here we look at some of the aftermath, as more details come out about the behaviour of the migrants and their treatment by Spain's military. We support the use of European military forces to defend Europe's borders.

We also take a look at developments in the central Mediterranean. Italy and the EU have made new arrangements with Tunisia and Libya to police the sea and prevent illegal crossings. This in effect returns the situation this region to what it was before the Arab Spring when Europeans already had good working relations with North African governments.

Finally we take a look at some of the motivations of the EU and the implications for Europe's future. Within the next 12 months various key European states will have elections, elections where the mainstream pro-EU parties are under threat from right-wing and populist parties. The EU needs to prevent a 2015-style migrant crisis within this period. Thus, we should not interpret recent relatively strict actions on migration as demonstrating a genuine interest of the EU in defending Europe. Fundamentally, the EU is pro-multiculturalism and pro-migration.
