Joe Biden’s decision to run a low energy, largely virtual, election operation is a risky strategy and if it comes off, he would have rewritten the campaign rule-book, according to Sky News contributor Miranda Devine.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has run a small target campaign, visiting only a handful of states in the final week of campaigning while spending the majority of his time giving speech from his home state of Delaware, which is reliably Democratic.
President Donald Trump by contrast has run a frenetic campaign, visiting multiple states per day and holding rallies that are well attended.
However, mainstream polling indicates that Mr Biden is well ahead, holding an eight point national lead over President Trump.
He is also leading the president in most of the critical key states, albeit by a smaller margin.
Ms Devine told Sky News she believes the Trump campaign’s energy, including its decision to conduct in-person door knocking campaigns in swing states despite the pandemic, will see it surge to victory.
However, she said if Mr Biden pulls off an “unlikely” win, he would have upended campaign convention.
"The last weekend, when more than 70 million voters have already put their votes, he’s (Biden) decided to do a little bit of barnstorming," Ms Devine said.
"It’s hard to catch up with Donald Trump, who spent the last month at least travelling all around the country, doing up to three rallies a day, he doesn’t stop.
"Most days, Joe Biden was so-called calling a lid, which is ending in-person events, by before noon.
"If Joe Biden were to win, which I think is unlikely, he would have re-written the rules of campaigning all over the world.”
