Mendelssohn completed his first symphony in 1824 at the age of 15. The first performance of the symphony was given in November of 1824 at the birthday party of Fanny Mendelssohn, sister to Felix. The public premiere was given in February 1827 in Leipzig. Mendelssohn dedicated the work to the London Philharmonic Society.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro di molto
II. Andante
III. Menuetto: Allegro molto
IV. Allegro con fuoco
