Police back down from a confrontation with the crowd at the Worldwide Rally for Freedom in Melbourne. This was a defining moment which could have turned very ugly and based on past experiences with Victoria Police it seemed likely they would start pepper spraying the crowd and violently arresting people. This time though they were apparently told to stand down, and they did. A volatile and potentially ugly situation was deescalated and the rally proceeded peacefully.

We had been told by police command that they were keen to repair the relationship between police and the people and were naturally skeptical, but this incident seemed to demonstrate that at least on that day, they meant it.
