Novák completed this piano concerto in 1895, however the public premiere of the concerto did not take place until 1915. The gap between composition and performance can be attributed to comments from Novák as found in his journal “The more I practised the concerto, the more distasteful it became to me… So I decided not to play that monstrosity”. Fortunately, unlike other composers such as Tchaikovsky and Dvořák, Novák did not destroy the manuscript entirely and it can still be enjoyed today.

This concerto is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro Energico
II. Andante Con Sentimento
III. Allegro Giusto
