Khachaturian composed the ballet ‘Spartacus’ in 1954 to be performed at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Due to the relative success of the work, he later composed an orchestral adaptation of the ballet into four orchestral suites. The ‘Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia’ is the first movement from the second Spartacus Suite.
