4th Grade Math 2.8, Multiply Using Mental Math & Properties

We can use Mental Math and properties to help us multiply. By using Properties of Multiplication, we can multiply friendly numbers first, or break numbers apart to be friendlier. Friendly numbers are numbers that are easy to add, subtract, multiply, or divide using mental math. We review the Commutative and Associative Properties of Multiplication, and the Distributive Property. We show examples of using the strategy Halving and Doubling to multiply large numbers. We show examples of using the Distributive Property with addition or subtraction, and how they're related because, either way, we are breaking apart a factor. We solve a word problem using the Distributive Property, which involves a table of information, with addition and subtraction to show that we will get the same answer.
