French composer Gabriel Fauré would complete two piano quartet works in his lifetime. The first quartet would be completed in 1879, and revised in 1883 into the current form it is today. The work is in a minor key, but ranges between a morose, joyous and turbulent mood, expressing the conflicting emotions Fauré felt after his engagement to singer Pauline Viardot ended less than four months after proposing.

This quartet is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro molto moderato
II. Scherzo, Allegro vivo
III. Adagio
IV. Allegro molto
