Tying The March Brown Spider
Hook: Mustad 3906, 3906b or 3399, #10 - #16
Thread: Pearsall's Silk, Orange
Body: Hare's Mask Dubbing
Rib: Danville Oval Gold Tinsel, #18
Hackle: Grouse Covert Hackle
The March Brown Spider is another old fly that has over the years produced all sorts of variations.
From wet flies, nymphs, streamers, soft hackles to dry flies there is a March Brown fly for any occasion. This variant is a 'spider' fly also referred to commonly as a soft hackle. Very simply pattern and quick to tie. If you are needing some flies in smaller sizes this pattern is a good was to tie as even at a size 18 it is not difficult to tie. If you don't have any Pearsall's silk then just use a Uni-Thread 8/0 in Orange or a Danville 6/0 in Orange. That will do fine. - Enjoy
