This little £8.49 pen could save your life. Powered by two AAA batteries (not included), hold it close to a suspected power source and it will light up and beep. The alert intensity varies according to the distance and power level detected and distinguishes between Live and Neutral wiring.
In the box were just the pen itself and a simple two page User Guide, which I append to the end of my unboxing video. No batteries were included, which is a pity. The device is made entirely of plastic but the build quality seems fine and robust enough for home or business use.
The pen has a screw top to access the compartment for the two AAA batteries with below it a large pocket clip. On the other end is the clear plastic sensor robe with above it a small LED inspection light. On the side are the row of LED signal indicators with switches for the indicator light and Off/On status.
Using the device could not be simpler. Just hold the tip adjacent to the wire or area to be tested - no need to touch the tip to the wire - and the device will beep and the LED's will light up. There are six LED's, graduated from orange to red. Two will illuminate whenever an electrical field is detected, four will light to indicate a Null or Neutral line and 6 when a Live line is found. The beeper varies in intensity in tandem with the LEDs. The inspection light can be turned on to aid when working in dark or confined spaces. The device is very sensitive and often it is hard to tell how strong the signal is. To help with this try and keep wires to be tested as far apart as possible. That said, it gets easier with experience and better too sensitive than not enough, that way at least it will keep you alive.
For the budget price, this is a good buy and a handy device to keep in the home. Professionals and more experienced users will probably wish to pay extra for a more sophisticated alternative.
