From 1999 to 2011 UNIT consisted of young musicians from south east Asia...plus me. Most of them were utter cunts. This brief epitaph is what they deserve. Of every Chinese and Vietnamese person ever to be a member of UNIT (and there were shed loads of them), only UJ and Michael Hoang have remained loyal friends. The others don’t even speak to me. That’s the kind of people they are. Well, if they ever hear this track, they’ll know what kind of person I am, too...far more of a cunt than they’ll ever be.
I wrote particularly intricate bass guitar parts for Herr Fritze (overdubbed – he’s good but even he has yet to learn how to play 3 bass guitars simultaneously although I suspect he’s working on it). I thought this made a pleasant change from my usual practise in which I chuck cart loads of vibraphones and organs around then swamp them under synthesisers and sprinkle the whole melange with a barrage of birds. You can only go so far with that routine before the public cries ‘enough already!’
I heard you on Alchemy Radio.
I heard you on The Spinning Man show.
I heard you on Don Campau’s radio show.
I heard you on Radio Overflow.
I heard you on Resonance radio.
As I listened to your playing, it remained a mystery
how you could ever be in the same pop group as me.
Yet there’s a deeper mystery much harder to define:
that’s how you could ever have been a friend of mine.
