Apollo Program Explained [Why we're NOT celebrating 50th Anniversary of the Apollo]
We review the Apollo program history and give you facts to make the Apollo program explained. The NASA Apollo 11 launch marked the beginning of a series of moon missions, lasting until the famous Apollo 17 mission in 1972, being the last time humans set foot upon the moon. So why are we not celebrating this historic event, as many others do?
The Apollo program was called into life by president John F. Kennedy, as a direct response to the Soviet lead in manned space flight. Exactly 50 years ago, the Apollo 11 spacecraft with the lunar module Eagle was launched on launch pad 39A at Cape Canaveral, not only for the US, but Apollo 11 for all mankind.
Undoubtedly, we want to pay the Apollo program tribute by stating its importance for the advancement of humanity and the fast progress of spaceflight technology in the 1960s. However, we are not celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo program missions!
In short, we are extremely disappointed and sad that the Apollo program was cancelled. And all the subsequent plans of the Apollo program, which NASA had to colonize the moon, also got completely scrapped, largely because of the Vietnam war.
Due to bad decisions by presidents Johnson and Nixon, the severe cutting back of NASA's budget in the 70s destroyed all plans for NASA moon bases within the framework of LESA - the Lunar Exploration System for Apollo.
And now, 50 years later, NASA has announced the Artemis program to land astronauts on the moon by 2024. But will it be enough to make us happy again? Or is someone else needed to restore the dreams of colonizing the moon and yes, even Mars?
