For only forty thousand years mankind has lived its hopes and fears;
from the Pleistocene to plasticine we’ve grown –
a fleeting history is all we’ve ever known.
All your religions, all financial deals you’ve tied,
your petty politics and patriotic pride,
are less than atoms in a sky that’s light years wide.
Our nearest galaxy is Messier 31,
one thousand million stars not so unlike our Sun;
it’s the most distant object naked eyes can see,
over two million light years between it and me.
Five thousand million years the Sun has shone each day,
a nuclear reactor 93 million miles away,
oblivious of the predator, indifferent to the prey.
All nature has maintained its resistance
to homosapiens repeated insistence of a purpose behind our existence,
so when I look into the sky I realise there is no reason ‘why’.
