VID DIARY 010 - 'Satchel' [Episode 9]
SOFTWARE USED: Krita (krita.org) and Adobe Photoshop CS5
This video diary series is about keeping creative and getting artwork done. See what's happening behind the scenes as a creative project gets made.
TALKING POINTS:
00:00 - 1,2 snap, snap - dun-dun-dun-dun... dun, dun. Let's go!
00:06 - Tangent: film influences and tone
An overview of what the vid diary will predominantly be about (i.e. blue lines or 'roughing' with loose line art) on the next scene for the motion comic. I then dive into a tangent about certain thematic films, comics, and other creative works that have influenced the direction and overall "feeling" of 'The Adventure Satchel'. Some films and creative personalities briefly discussed include: 'Jane and the Lost City' (1987), The Rocketeer (1991), The Indiana Jones Trilogy ('Raiders of the Lost Ark' (1981), 'Temple of Doom' (1984), and 'The Last Crusade' (1989), the original Star Wars Trilogy ('A New Hope' (1977), 'The Empire Strikes Back' (1980), and 'Return of the Jedi' (1983), Romancing the Stone (1984), The Jewel of the Nile (1985), the Back to the Future Trilogy (BTTF (1985), 'Part II' (1989), and 'Part III' (1990), 'The Goonies' (1985), Steven Speilberg, George Lucas, Joe Johnson, Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner as well as comic creator Herge ('Tintin'). Then, trying to process what could be the zeitgeist, intangible element that was between these Family Favourites of yesteryear. Could this just be a potential pulp fiction affection for works of a golden age?
06:55 - Breaking down a script excerpt
Looking at and analyzing a section of 'The Adventure Satchel' script and what needs to be focused on for the next scene. Highlighting, chunking down (i.e. breaking apart) main points of action for either a new interactable element within a scene and what other aspects need to be considered
11:24 - Motion comic specs
A discussion about what specs I use to create 'The Adventure Satchel'. Discussion points include: Full HD pixels (i.e. 1920 x 1080 pixels), resolution: ppi and dpi (i.e. pixels per inch and dots per inch), and colour profiles
14:45 - Alpha channels
What transparency and alpha channels are and how they work when saving images that help preserve the transparency (e.g. saving as a .png file, etc.)
15:30 - Blue lines (i.e. roughing)
A discussion on loose linework and how you can use this to your advantage when working out the schematics of a scene
18:57 - Learning curve: duplicating brush strokes
Coming from a Photoshop background, I discover by learning as I go, that I need to duplicate each layer and then merge with the layer below in Krita to duplicate a brushstroke. Not the worst thing in the world, but for my work process - a little cumbersome...
20:31 - Fast-forward painting session (1)
21:00 - Learning curve: back to Photoshop?
I move the Krita scene (NB: saved as a .psd file) to Photoshop CS5 to help speed up the 'brush duplication method' for the ornate window patterns prominent in the background.
23:18 - Final thoughts, well-wishes, and signing off
NB: Defintely a bit of a disjointed episode where I learned a few new things along the way. Hope all of my clunkiness has helped you out somewhat as well...
Thanks for watching,
