Morality, reality and civilization

The golden rule, ultimately from Judaism, of treating other people as you would like to be treated yourself ie with respect and sensitivity, is vital for any society where human rights and individual freedom are respected and can flourish. This vital golden rule did not make it into either Islamic ideology or postmodern relativistic thinking, and we can see the results around us accordingly. While no society has ever been perfect, morality and decency based ultimately on the golden rule need to return as the central motivating force not only of our personal lives but of what we respect and expect from those with influence and power.
