Imagine a foreign power attacking the United States, killing 701K people and injuring a total of 43.6 million others. What would any normal American patriot do? Seriously folks, if this had happened and there were only a few thousand or a few hundred deaths and injuries, and the government did nothing to prevent it, you would have seen 80+ million legally armed Americans come out of the woodworks guns blazing.

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.
