When Israel’s son Yoseph is 17 years old, he works alongside the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah as a shepherd. He brings some sort of a report regarding his brothers to his father Yakob.
His plan (Reuben’s) was to later return and rescue Yoseph and thus he hopes gain back some love from his father that was lost when he defiled the father’s wife.
CH 36 ends with Esau, who dwelt in the area of Mt Seir, and Yakob, who dwelt in the land of Canaan, and the next section of text with the phrase: These are the generations. We leave the rather dull genealogical tables of Esau and Yakob, and return to the more exciting accounts of the lives of these Patriarchs, these OT saints. But it was the natural worldy genealogy of Esau and then the Spiritual genealogy of Yakob.
This unquestionably means the message made Yoseph’s brothers look bad. We are not really told whether it was truthful. However, Yoseph is portrayed as a righteous person from his youth. A follower of Yahweh and HIS ways.
